The availability and content of on-line bibliographic records for curriculum materials are evaluated in this study. Records were selected from the OCLC OnLine Union Catalog, the predominant on-line bibliographic network providing cataloging to all types of libraries including school libraries and others supporting curriculum material collections. Based on a sample of shelflist cards for curriculum materials from the Instructional Materials Laboratory collection of the University Libraries at California State University, Northridge, a quantitative assessment is made of the content of the matching OCLC records. Study results suggest that the availability and content of OCLC catalog records for curriculum materials may satisfy the bibliographic information and access requirements of curriculum materials collection librarians.

There is a new movement afoot to change cataloging philosophy. The aim of library cataloging has been to create a machine-readable card catalog rather than to provide optimum online access for library users. Catalogers need to become operationally engaged in the vision of the "new catalog," and take advantage of the potential of the OPAC. Cataloging for "access" rather than identification should be the motto of Technical Services Divisions in the 1990s. These discussions are already taking place in the Library of Congress, and in such forums as the Technical Services Directors of Large Research Libraries Discussion Group.

In 2014, the Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK) overhauled its consortial cataloging workflows by switching to what has been termed a model of “cataloging from the center.” For more than 20 years, the Ohio academic library consortium relied on volunteers from its member institutions to catalog consortially purchased materials. Consolidating the consortial cataloging into the OhioLINK office allowed for revising the various workflows. Since 2014, the cataloging workflows for these shared electronic resources have improved efficiencies, allowing records to be provided to members in a more timely manner.

Abstract Communication of public catalog issues throughout the University of Alabama Libraries has been and still is a major concern of the cataloging department. Many cataloging department heads hold the firm belief that improved user access to the libraries' collections can be provided through an improvement in the communication patterns between several key departments of the libraries and the catalog department. Through the input of a group of public service and collection development librarians, the department should be able to assess the time priorities for materials processing, resulting in a greater degree of probability that useful backlogs would be made accessible with a minimum of delay. As a cataloging department head, it is also my belief that a discussion of the cataloging process and the concerns of the catalogers could lead to more consistent and more efficient processing of materials. In November 1993 the Cataloging Advisory Group was formed as a one-year experiment in communication. Since that time the group has gone through numerous changes in both membership and charge but has continued to be one of the stronger discussion groups in the UA Libraries. The paper explores the group and its successes and failures during its six-year history.

To determine the feasibility of our library providing full cataloging for textbooks using OCLC, I conducted a study of records in the OCLC data base and performed a literature search on the topic. I found that a preponderance of duplicate OCLC records and a lack of uniformity in cataloging practices would make this a costly proposition. It would also make it difficult to train a paraprofessional to select catalog records and to handle the cataloging of these materials. This paper suggests standards to be considered by the appropriate ALA committees in order to alleviate the duplication of records and to make textbook cataloging easier.

E-books are an important part of library collections. Allowing patrons to easily find e-books in a library’s online catalog requires properly cataloging these materials. Miao Jin, Catalog Librarian at Hinds Community College, gave a presentation titled “Cataloging e-Books: Dealing with Vendors and Various Other Problems” at the Mississippi State University Libraries’ eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit held in the Mitchell Memorial Library on August 2, 2013. Jin provided information on cataloging her library’s e-books and adding them to the library’s online catalog. She presented strategies for loading e-book machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records, and shared her experience working with vendors.
