Reassembling teacher professional development: the case for Quality Teaching Rounds

Conventional professional development, while still in full swing in many places, has been widely maligned for its passive approach to learning, its failure to address local differences, and its often single-event format. While the corrective move to more collaborative models of professional learning has been heralded, few empirical studies to date have demonstrated impact on classroom practice or student learning outcomes. What is missing in both approaches, we argue, is a focus on pedagogy that guides teachers’ efforts at improvement. To address this absence, we elaborate our ‘reassembled’ approach to professional development, Quality Teaching Rounds. We argue that bringing together approaches to teacher development that privilege collaboration, community, and context with a substantive pedagogical framework will deliver more powerful professional development that makes a substantial impact on practice and produces measurable effects.     

Effective Students and Families: The Importance of Individual Characteristics for Achievement in High School

Recent Australian experience of decentralisation in education has many parallels with contemporary movements in a number of other western democratic nations. Within the State of Victoria, Australia, all schools have developed, at local community level, school charters which address the school’s goals, policies, priorities, curriculum, and standards. This article reports an analysis of one component of almost 300 schools’ charters; namely codes of conduct for student behaviour. The results indicate a need for schools to emphasise a closer connection between students’ rights and their responsibilities. Secondly, the many schools intending to implement an assertive or authoritarian approach to discipline are failing to balance their planned use of punishments with corresponding rewards and recognition. Thirdly, the political relevance of the style of discipline develop chosen by local school communities appears incompatible with an education likely to develop democratic citizens.     

浅析我国商誉会计

随着企业合并的增加,商誉在企业经营活动中的作用也日趋明显,因此商誉会计完善与否也变得更加重要。我国新会计制度开始涉及商誉问题,其主要是通过对我国商誉会计的现状结合相关规定和现实需求进行分析,不难发现我国商誉会计制度还存在很多的不足。本文将针对这些不足予以分析并提出了相对合理的商誉会计处理方法。     

Making diversity safe for democracy: American pluralism and the presidential local address, 1885–1992

Research suggests that modern U.S. presidents increasingly use the local address to speak to voters where they live, both literally and figuratively. Yet most explanations of these speeches suggest that their political efficacy is limited to winning votes. Here I call for a reconsideration of the local address as part of rhetorical presidents’ responses to U.S. citizens’ diversity. Specifically, I provide a historical‐critical account of why presidents may have been able to use the local address to manage American pluralism and then offer a reading of how they might have done so, using examples from 1885–1992.

Communicating With School Boards: Position,Power, and Perseverance

The theme of this years Academy meeting, “Telling Our Story,” raises important questions about how best to hone our message to diverse audiences in order to achieve desired outcomes. This paper addresses strategies and techniques that can be employed with local school boards. The school board is recognized as one of the most influential organizations for developing and shaping policy at the local level. Without the support and advocacy of the local board, efforts to promote physical education and healthful activity for children will not be achieved. The paper also suggests that many advocacy approaches can be generalized lo other groups and settings. including state legislative bodies and other statewide commissions that address issues related to the education of children and youth. Finally, the author acknowledges that despite the best efforts to tell our story, intervening variables beyond the storyteller's control (e.g., happenstance. chance, and fate) may influence the message.
