During a lazy summer day in 2001,you might turn your telescope skywardto see what the heavens have to offer. And there, you spot a strange ob-ject whose wings are slowly flapping as it emerges from the shadow of the Earth. It’s not a bird,it’S not a plane-it’s KEO,one of the strangest andmost imaginative time capsules over conceived.  相似文献

Recently I was reminded of a story which my mother swears is trus (though she doesn't call me Bobby muchanymore):Back in 1958,when I was just past four years old,my parents gave me a young parakeet. My mother determinedthat our parakeet would learn to talk, and to this end sat at the microphone of a borrowed tape recorder for a full 1/2hour,saying over and over again:“Pretty bird!Pretty bird!Pretty bird!Pretty bird!...”and so on.The resultingtaped message was played for our parakeet at least once per day.For weeks. One of Mom's friends often dropped by for an early morning cup of coffee, and was well aware (due to the in-cessant taped message) of her attempts to teach our bird to talk. And one day, while the friend was at the kitchentable, the bird began to speak, but very quietly and indistinctly. She excitedly called my mother into the room, andtold her that the bird was trying to say something. The two women carefully leaned toward the parakeet's cage, andheard him say, very clearly now-“Bobby!Stop that!”  相似文献

The convergence criterion of Newton’s method to find the zeros of a map f from a Lie group to its corresponding Lie algebra is established under the assumption that f satisfies the classical Lipschitz condition, and that the radius of convergence ball is also obtained. Furthermore, the radii of the uniqueness balls of the zeros of f are estimated. Owren and Welfert (2000) stated that if the initial point is close sufficiently to a zero of f, then Newton’s method on Lie group converges to the zero; while this paper provides a Kantorovich’s criterion for the convergence of Newton’s method, not requiring the existence of a zero as a priori.  相似文献

A Broken Wing Some students are just to be failures. That’s the way some adults look at 1 kids. Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “A bird with a 2 wing will never fly as high.” I’m sure that T. J. Ware was made to 3 this way almost every day in school.  相似文献

As a carefully designed work, Flannert O’Connor’s short story“A Good Man is Hard to Find”is a brilliant example for skillfully using narrative techniques to convey her Catholic faith. Mieke Bal’s theories of time in narratology provide a fresh perspective to explores the characterizations in Flannert O’Connor’s“A Good Man is Hard to Find”. Time functions greatly to the characterizations of the characters through the narrative text in terms of the story and the fabula. It helps to present the characters’ personalities by playing with the sequential ordering, rhythm and frequency. By using these narrative techniques, grandmother’s selfishness, her moral inanition and her considerations that she is morally superior to others is fully expressed to the reader as well as Misfit’s struggling and renascence to his disbeliefs of God and so on.  相似文献

The paper deals with the reading and interpreting of the voice of gender in Emily Dickinson’s poems. The gender, the 1yric poem and the reading constitute the performance.Dickinson succeeded in constructing alternatives to a traditional, fixed binary gender system(woman/man) and opens opportunities for the reader to perform alternative gendering.Analysis of voices of gender in and of Dickinson’s poems shows that her variant performances of gender are crucial to the general construction of her poetry.Through the analysis of the voice of gender in Dickinson’s poetry, the paper discloses the crucial function of poets construct in women’s rebellion and self-salvation and subverting patriarchy, which also demonstrates her uniqueness in her life and literary creativity.  相似文献

But my kite often flies the  相似文献

The essay attempts to summarize Michael Halliday’s contribution to the theory of syntactic semantics according to the author’s understanding. Starting from the origin of his ideas, the essay then explains what syntactic semantics means and the concept of transitivity system and several processes such as material processes, behavioural processes and mental processes. Finally, Halliday’s new ideas are described-namely the micro perspective of one part of the functional linguistics.  相似文献

The play Death of a Salesman is undoubtedly the most influential play of Arthur Miller which depicts a tragic life of Willy Loman, a travelling salesman, induced by his false American Dream of making a fortune out of business. Unlike many other essays focusing on the hero Willy, this one tries to explore Willy’s dead brother Ben’s function in this play so as to demonstrate that Ben plays an important role in Willy’s life by making Willy’s life more tragic in terms of Aristotle’s tragic theory. The first part of the essay illustrates Ben’s importance to Willy and the second part centers on the way Ben pushes Willy to a more tragic situation.  相似文献

Zhuangzi is the masterpiece of Zhuangzi, and Walden is the masterpiece of Henry David Thoreau. This paper intends to study the similarities of Zhuangzi’s and Thoreau’s outlooks on life by analyzing Thoreau’s origin with Taoism and the absorption from Taoism in Walden. By making a large amount of analysis and comparison of the texts in these two works, the paper comes to such a conclusion: both Thoreau and Zhuangzi advocate to simplify people’s material life and to seek voluntary poverty; they are willing to enjoy the solitude and pursue the spiritual independence and freedom; they prefer to return to nature, live harmoniously with nature and therefore reach the realm of"unity of heaven and humanity". They pay more attention to human existence and their spiritual state. In the complicated modern society, people devote themselves to seeking a materially rich life. However, they do not attach enough importance to spiritual richness. As a result, the whole human society is facing a serious spiritual crisis in modern times. Thoreau’s and Zhuangzi’s outlooks on life can lead people to go through various difficulties of life and guard the pure land of the heart.  相似文献

Kate Chopin’s (1899- ) The Awakening gives an account of Edna Pontellie’s awakening in soul and body and sing highly of her courage to pursue freedom and independence. But in a patriarchal society, women can only exist subordinate to men and any woman’s rebellion is to be defeated. Through a detailed analysis of the process of Edna’s awakening, it argues that Edna is not awakened but disillusioned, and she still lives under the heavy patriarchal shackles.  相似文献

If a person(known as the agent) acts without authority,or exceeds his authority, his actions cannot normally bind the person(known as the principal) on whose behalf he purports to act. However, subsequently, ratification allows the principal to adopt and endorse the agent’s acts.A remarkable feature of ratification is that it is retroactive in effect thereby becoming operative from the moment of the agent’s contracting with the third party rather than the moment of the principal’s ratification.  相似文献
