Characterizing University Library Use of Social Media: A Case Study of Twitter and Facebook from Australia

The work presented here characterise the engagement of one university library with two social media platforms popular with academic libraries. The collected data are analysed to identify the forms of Twitter and Facebook activity that engage library stakeholders in social media conversations. Associations were observed between: i) directed tweets from the library and mentions of the library by others on Twitter; and ii) comments from the library and comments from others on Facebook. Three broad classes of Twitter user interacting with the library were revealed: i) accounts strongly linked to the library with multiple to/from tweets; ii) those weakly linked to the library with, typically, a single tweet; and iii) those indirectly linked to the library through tweets mentioning the library and sent by other users. Two divergent forms of Facebook interaction with the library were highlighted: i) a library post generating a large sequence of comments, typically in response to a competition/challenge; and ii) a library post with no comments, typically a photo post or a post inviting readers to click a link to find out more about an event/service. The work presented here is an initial investigation that provides useful insights, and offers a methodology for future research.     

以读者为中心的智慧图书馆研究

[目的/意义]智慧图书馆是智能技术驱动下的一种新型图书馆模式。当前智慧图书馆的理论研究进入了纵深阶段。因此有必要对过去智慧图书馆的研究进行总结，思考智慧图书馆未来研究的方向。[方法/过程]总结近5年来国内外智慧图书馆研究的主题内容，包括智慧图书馆的基本问题、技术应用、实践案例、智慧服务以及智慧图书馆馆员。[结果/结论]认为智慧图书馆以大数据、人工智能等技术为支撑，建设的重点应当从馆员、资源和读者3要素入手，建立图书馆馆藏、图书馆馆员、图书馆读者的多维交互模式，为读者提供智慧服务。未来智慧图书馆的建设应以读者需求的精准识别为起点，重视读者体验，构建更加以读者为中心的图书馆。     

Spanish Speaking Users and Their Communities

Originally presented to a conference on curriculum reform for library science faculties, this article reflects on how public librarians can assist new Spanish speaking users. Based on various career involvements with Latino communities, the author covers aspects of library outreach, initial user contact, introduction to and tour of the public library; points to a gap between traditional library service and non-users and offers suggestions that will encourage return visits by new users.     

The new central public library for Veria,Greece

A new central public library is being planned for the town of Veria, Greece, to open in 1995. The building, funded by the Ministry of Education, will have its design selected as the result of a limited architectural competition. In addition to the library benefits for Veria, it is hoped that the building and the planning process related to it, will serve as a model for other Greek public library building projects.

The article describes the author’s involvement as consultant to the Veria project, working with the librarian on the preparation of the brief. Following short accounts of the Greek public library scene; the community to be served by the Veria library; the drawbacks of the present building; the site for the new library, and aspects of the brief, the writer ends with a discussion of the difficulties and constraints faced by the consultant advising on an overseas project.

The economic value of library services for children: The case of the Czech public libraries

Public support of library services must be targeted towards children because these services play a key role in their development. However, no prior research has investigated the value of public library services for children. Specifically, earlier studies evaluated the value of public libraries as a whole, without considering library services for different stakeholders. The fact that children are not autonomous economic agents is another problem to address. These barriers can be overcome by using the contingent valuation method with parents/caregivers as the subjects queried and children used as the objects in this study. Thus, the economic value of library services for children can be obtained to support managerial decisions on services specifically designed for children. More precisely, this study is unique in that it develops a contingent valuation methodology for estimating the value of children's library services based on adults' willingness to allocate a proportion of municipal budgets. Both users and non-users were surveyed to verify the proposed methodology empirically. The results show that the perceived effectiveness (ratio between perceived benefits and costs) of children's library services is 11.2 (11.2 units of benefits for each unit invested) in Czech public libraries compared with 4.3 for a library as a whole. This finding confirms the essential role of children's library services, implying that public libraries should offer a broader selection of children's books and other services. The study also shows that the value of children's library services depends on the age, education and economic structure of the adults queried. In addition, their satisfaction with library services is another important determinant, indicating that public libraries can influence the perceived benefits of children's library services.

图书馆网站版权政策是图书馆尊重版权人知识产权的表态,也是图书馆工作者和读者规避版权风险的行为指南。美国三大国家图书馆网站的版权政策涉及政策法源、版权人权利确认、合理使用、免责条款、侵权形式、图书馆业务说明、承诺以及网站安全等内容,体现出专业化和人性化的服务精神,具有很多可取之处,也存在一些不足,对我国图书馆网站版权政策的改善具有一定的借鉴意义。     

文化管理:中国图书馆管理的战略性选择

目前图书馆的现状是经验管理、科学管理两种模式并存，而科学管理占主要地位。图书馆的性质、特点和数字化图书馆的发展趋势，以及读者需求的变化等决定了图书馆必须选择文化管理。文化管理要求我们必须在管理的民主化、人性化，服务的社会化、个性化，以及图书馆机构设置方面作出变革。     

网络环境下的三维图书馆服务模式

图书馆是三维的,因为读者能够从传统图书馆、数字图书馆和Web图书馆寻找和获取文献信息资源。我们利用基于网络环境的图书馆的空间、资源和服务,创建了一种三维图书馆的服务模式。基于这种模式,提出了许多支持在读者和三维图书馆之间进行一种创新服务的思考,例如支持三维创新服务的主题公园设计。

通过袁同礼与北京大学图书馆关系的分析,探讨袁同礼先生在北京大学图书馆历史上的地位和作用。该文认为袁同礼先生与北京大学图书馆渊源深厚,曾四度结缘于北京大学图书馆。袁同礼先生不仅是中国图书馆现代化转型中的重要人物,也是北京大学图书馆现代化转型中的重要人物。他和北京大学图书馆一起,经历了现代化道路上的内忧外患,为北京大学馆顺利度过现代化过程中的曲折阶段而作出了极其重要的贡献。在北京大学图书馆现代化的过程中,袁先生的潜移默化的影响通过后来的严文郁等馆长不断得到体现。
