The Differences of Cultural Connotation between English and Chinese Animal Words

Animals are friends of human beings.Both the Chinese and English language contains a lot of words denoting animals.Along with the development of society,animal words gradually got their connotations in both languages.However,because of different cultural backgrounds of English and Chinese,the implied meanings of the same animal are possibly different.The article starts with the discussion on four causes of special connotation of animal words.Afterwards,the paper makes comparison between the cultural connotation of English and Chinese animal words.It mainly dwells on four types to explore the differences:similarity,part similarity,distinction and vacancy in equivalence.A large amount of examples have been employed to show the differences of connotation between English and Chinese animal words.Hopefully,the barriers in intercultural communication can be removed and mutual-understanding between the cultures will be achieved accordingly.     

Cultural Connotation and Translation of Color Words

This paper aims to analyze the cultural connotations of color words. To successfully translate the expressions relating to colors form Chinese to English or English to Chinese, it is a key step to master the cultural connotations of Chinese and English color words. By comparing the differences of the corresponding color words between Chinese and English, three basic translating methods are generalized.     

Comparative Analysis of the Connotations of Animal Expressions in English and Chinese

The expressions are the mirrors of the cultural diversities,and usually different cultural connotations bring them quite surprising associations.So it is important to analyze the similarities and differences of cultural connotations in different languages.With animal expressions as target,the paper analyzes cultural connotations in the expressions involving animals in English and Chinese comparatively by a number of examples.This may help people gain a comprehensive and deeper insight into different cultural connotations of English and Chinese idioms,and further improve the communication of the two cultures.     

Cross-cultural Pragmatic Analysis on Speech Act

The theory of speech acts tells us that when words are uttered,they perform three different kinds of speech acts.But cross-cultural communication raises a question that the same locutionary acts may perform different illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts,and in order to achieve the same illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts,people with different native languages may employ different locutionary acts to avoid the pragmatic failure.This paper aims to illustrate the differences on greeting,requesting,and rejecting between Chinese and Americans,focus on the cultural factors in language and cross-cultural communication,and using the fundamental cross-cultural theories to analyze the distinctions,such as Austin’s Speech Act Theory,Brown and Levinson Face Theory,Edward T Hall’s High-Context and Low-Context Communication,and Hofestede’s Value Dimensions.Finally,it tells the English learners to focus on the cultural difference in the cross-cultural communication to achieve the successful communication.     

A Contrastive Study on Cultural Connotations of Chinese and English Color Terms

Both Chinese and English are rich in the words denoting different colors. Cultural connotations of these words,however,arouse more interest than their lexical meanings due to the discrepancy between the two languages deriving from the differences of the speakers’ cultural background,social customs,and aesthetic interests. Employing contrastive analysis on the two cultures wherein the two languages are nourished,this paper has made a series of contrasts between and explorations on the cultural connotations of color terms in the two languages.

Daily Greetings may be the commonest expressions between people.Recently,a lot of scholars have begun to analyze the differences in greetings between English and Chinese.But they seldom explore the cultural factors that influence the differences in greetings.From the cultural points of view,this paper had made a comparative study of greetings in English and Chinese.Discussion focuses on the differences and similarities existing in greetings of the two languages and the culture factors that influence the differences.

Color words, as a part of language, has different cultural connotations in different culture, which usually express strong cultural characteristics. This thesis explores the similarities and differences between the color word"red"and"红色". The Influence of Cultural Differences on Translation

A Study of Code-Switching in Students’ Talk in College English Class

Code-switching between English and Chinese usually occurs in students’ talk when they are involved in taking communicative language activities in college English class. This paper studies the situations in which students are likely to use codeswitching and analyzes it from the perspective of the mental world in Verscheren’s Adaptation Theory. It shows that inadequate mastery of English language, cultural differences and the improper adjustment to context may lead to students’ using of codeswitching. It also shows that the use of code-switching in students’ talk adapts to students’ cognitive elements and emotive elements as well.

The Analysis of Comparison Between English and Chinese Animal Idioms

Furthermore, idioms are fixed phrases extracted from language over long time of usage. Although they are formed in short phrases, for example idioms known as "成语" in Chinese, which has only have four or eight letters, their meanings are exuberant and connotative. Therefore, the analysis of the idiom’s usage and the cultural differences it reflects is significant to every language learner and translator.     

A Brief Study of Cultural Connotation of English Color Terms

Color can make our life colorful not only by its physical attributions, but also by its extended meanings derived from cultural differences. There is striking richness in the cultural connotations of color terms, which can vivify our language. Since language is a reflection of culture, in order to have a good master of the English culture and overcome misunderstandings in communication, a better understanding of indications and cultural connotations of some typical color terms is a prerequisite for English learners.However, because English-speaking countries have certain geographic environments, customs, ways of thinking, religious beliefs, regimes, literature and arts and ways of living, there is no surprise that colors are described in some specific ways and have some particular meanings in that countries.The thesis will mainly deal with cultural connotations of some typical color terms and their usage in language.     

On Translation of Animal Metaphors

Metaphors have been described as a central role of our cognitive apparatus. It is central to our understanding of how language, thought and discourse are structured. Animal metaphors as an important part of metaphors take advantage of the animals’ characteristics to describe a person or a thing vividly and chiefly. Sometimes animal metaphors will give people a humorous and novel picture. In linguistics, it can fill in the vacancy in languages, and make the expression exact and visually. Metaphor is kind of figure of speech. The thesis analyzes the function and style of metaphor and discusses the metaphors’ structure in grammar. How we understand the animal’s meaning is the key to translate the animal metaphors. All the animal words have both denotative meanings and connotative meanings. In most cases, the animals connotative meanings are the same or similar. People usually have the same idea about the animals; therefore, even the people who do not know English can understand some animal metaphors However, due to his tory, religion, phonetics, geography, life style, aesthetics and social psychology, the animals’ connotative meanings are different or even con trary. Facing these problems, how we translate the animal metaphors. I find four methods: adaptation, simile with explanation, paraphrase, and annotation. Adaptation is very efficient for the animal metaphors, which have counterpart in Chinese. Simile-with-explanation is the commonest method to translate animal metaphors, which are similar across the cultures easy to comprehend. Paraphrase is the last method to translate animal metaphors, and especially it can deal with any case that the animal metaphors are profound. Annotation is used to trans late animal metaphors in context, particularly in written English. Using the four methods, we can translate animal metaphors successfully. And while we are doing translation, we should understand English animals’ name very well, and pay attention to the Chinese animals’ meaning to make sure our readers understand the author’s in tended meanings. The thesis consists of five parts. The first part of the thesis states the significance and necessity of topic, problems to be solved in the thesis, and the framework of the thesis. The second part is literature review. The third part analyzes the animal vocabulary’s meanings. The fourth part gives four methods to do the animal metaphors translation. The conclusion part reviews the whole thesis and points out the weakness to be improved.     

The cultural differences in teaching between Chinese and western

Language and culture are interacting. Learning a language must understand the culture. The lack of cultural knowledge will lead to students’mistakes in daily English,therefore,in English teaching,the cultural differences between Chinese and Western as an important question is put forward. Then,from the cultural differences between Chinese and western,I discuss the reasons for mistakes in daily English and then how to teaching.     

Evaluating Chinese College Students’ English Compositions:Different Writing Corrective Feedbacks between a Chinese Teacher and a Foreign Teacher & the Attitudes of College Students

The study aims to uncover the differences between a Chinese writing teacher and a foreign writing teacher in evaluating Chinese college students’ English compositions and find out students’ attitudes towards different kinds of feedbacks. The data collection method, sample analysis and questionnaire have been implemented to probe for the results. The results are supposed to give some suggestions to the English writing class in Chinese universities.     

Influences of Cultural Differences on Interpretation between English and Chinese

This article aims to describe the importance of the cultural background knowledge between English and Chinese when interpret ing.Ignoring the cultural differences may affect the corrections of interpretation.It is a must for interpreters to learn and understand the dif ferent cultures for interpreting.
