College Students’ pragmatic competence is generally low at present. The following will be the causes:Different sense of value;Improper teaching and negative transfer. There are some methods for improving students’ pragmatic competence:a culture syllabus should be compiled;culture courses should be offered and the teaching method of culture input should be employed.     

A Research on the Improvement of Pragmatic Competence in College English Teaching

A core issue in foreign language teaching is to foster actual competence of language learners to practically utilize language, which is called pragmatic competence. But compared with traditional linguistic competence, the levels of their pragmatic competence need to be further understood. Thus it is essential to make an investigation into this. From the investigation results it is expected to reveal from which aspects teachers and students should carry on in order to improve pragmatic competence and meet foreign language learning need in new age.     

Developing Pragmatic Competence in Chinese EFL Classroom

This paper aims at investigating effective classroom-based instructive methods that facilitate the development of pragmatic competence of the intermediate-level adult English learners in China,who have gained relatively high grammatical competence but low pragmatic competence.The paper starts with the importance and components of pragmatic competence.It then examines what should be taught to help develop learners’ pragmatic competence.The paper focuses on some explicit instructive methods adopted by the author in her conversational English class that may raise learners’ awareness of pragmatic knowledge and enhance learners’ practice of pragmatic abilities:1) Encouragement of learners’ observation of pragmatic phenomena by English speakers from authentic audio-visual materials;2) Discussion of linguistic variations for each speech act and strategies of carrying out certain speech acts according to contextual cues;3) Role-play tasks engaging students in different speech events and communicative actions.The effectiveness of these methods is shown by test results after at the end of the course.     

Speech Act of Refusal-A Proposal from an Interlanguage Pragmatic Perspective

This paper is to present a typology of refusal strategies which may be employed in the analysis of refusal performance from a discourse approach.Some previous research carried out is reviewed in order to classify non-native speakers’ production of this speech act.Then,the suggested taxonomy will be described in a systematized way from an interlanguage pragmatic perspective and within a conversational analysis framework.Finally,it is emphasized that effective communicative competence plays an important role in the production of this face-threatening speech act of refusing.     

Pragmatic Eompetence and English Elassroom Teaching

The development of foreign lan- guage learners＂ pragmatic competence is an im- portant objective of foreign language teaching and learning, which is greatly influenced by classroom teaching. This paper first discusses the definition of pragmatic competence, and then analyses the features of English classroom teach- ingand the relationship between pragmatic competence and classroom teaching. Finally, some suggestions about pragmatic competence development are also provided, that is, how to cultivate pragmatic competence in English class- room teaching.     

Influence of Psychological Factors on the Improvement of Spoken English

From learner’s innermost feelings,the author attempts to elaborate the influences of psychological factors on improving the spoken language.The study of spoken English is a very complex process,which is affected easily by learner’s linguistic environment and character.We can draw a conclusion that psychological factors are an important problem and cannot be neglected.     

An Analysis of the Variation of Euphemism Under Register Theory

The euphemism is a phenomenon of language variation with different language varieties. And this phenomenon is closely related with social context. Register, as a concrete representation of context, especially its tenor of discourse, makes great influence on what kind of euphemism and what level of euphemism people will use to achieve effective communication. Therefore, euphemism as language variation will be analyzed from the perspective of tenor of discourse in Halliday’s Register Theory in order to enhance learners’ pragmatic awareness and pragmatic competence when learning English euphemism or in daily communication.     

A Case Study of the Characteristics of an Autonomous Learner:Take an Adult English Learner for Example

This study based on researcher’s adult oral English teaching experience,takes an adult English learner as a case study to explore the characteristics of an autonomous English learner.From analysis of data (observation and teaching diary),this study elaborates three common characteristics of an autonomous learner:(1) Firstly,an autonomous learner has a high motivation;(2) Secondly,an autonomous learner is good at trying different learning strategies,especially metacognitive strategy to manage learning proceeding.(3) Lastly,an autonomous learner readily takes charge of their own learning by making plan and reflecting on it.Meanwhile,this study presents teacher’s role as a facilitator and consultor and some factors that need taking into consideration,offering a precious experience for future’s fostering of autonomous English learners.     

The Students' Learning Autonomy and Language Teaching

As an essential concept of language teaching, learner autonomy (LA) is very important in language learning. Looking back to the history of foreign language teaching, we can find that people’s different attitudes to learner autonomy have become a clue of modern foreign language teaching research.On the basis of foreign language teaching (FLT), this article aims to make clear three points: 1) what is learner autonomy? 2) What is the significance of cultivating students’ learning autonomy in English language teaching in China? 3) And what can we do to cultivate students’ learning autonomy? All the answers of these questions can be found in this article.     

The Acquisition of English Negatives by a Portuguese Boy

this study provided the strong evidence that L2 learner’s development patterns in syntactic structure is very similar to the pattern of L1 learners.L2 and L1 learner pass the similar gradual route to get the TL negative structure.But L2 learners’ acquisitional sequences are not completely rigid.Individual learners may be interfered by other social or psychological factors en route and they may take longer than two years and some never travel the whole distance.     

A Survey on English Learner Autonomy at Postgraduate Stage

Language competence is the ultimate goal of language learning.As the development of globalization,the task of improving learners’ English competence becomes even more urgent.Context Approach is first introduced,and learner autonomy is brought in as a context approach in the specified teaching environment concerned.On the basis of that,a small-scale survey is conducted to investigate the status of English learner autonomy among some students at postgraduate stage.     

The Application of Pragmatics in College English Teaching

The teaching of pragmatic knowledge is as important as those grammatical rules.It is very critical for a successful communication.An increasingly large number of English language teachers who possess a special interest in pragmatics begin to adopt the pragmatic teaching which aims at promoting students’communicative competence.In order to improve students’ communicative ability,teachers must pay attention to the importance of pragmatics in teaching process.Only in this way can college students be trained to use language correctly and properly.     

On Task-based Syllabus

Task-based syllabus (TBS) is organized around tasks. The basic theoretical foundation of TBS is Krashen’s acquisition theory.from the L2 acquisition theory. The characteristic of TBS is focus of process of learning. TBS can improve communicative competence of learners, but it ignores grammar learning and teaching. The application of TBS in China is wide and the author provides an example.     

The Influence of Grammatical Competence on Reading Comprehension

With the development of globalization,English has become one of the most popular languages in the world.In many non-English-speaking countries,English teaching and learning occupies a very important position in their foreign language education.Grammar teaching is an indispensable part of English language teaching in EFL context like China;however,in recent years,grammar teaching has been more or less neglected.Without doubt,grammatical competence is one of the major factors that influence reading efficiency.This paper mainly focuses on examining how a learner’s grammatical competence influences his or her reading comprehension,starting with a comprehensive review of the grammar-related factors involved in reading comprehension.     

Negative Cultural Transfer in English Teaching and Its Alleviating Principles

Teaching English as a foreign language is not tantamount to elaborating on syntactic structures or learning new vocabulary and expressions, but should incorporate some cultural elements which are intertwined with the language itself. The main premise of the paper is that effective communication is more than a matter of linguistic proficiency and the learner’s pragmatic competence is more or less arrested by the negative cultural transfer from the mother tongue, and based on that premise, the paper analyses the reasons behind negative cultural transfer from the lexical dimension, the speech act dimension, and the psychological dimension, and concludes with a tripartite toolkit of alleviating principles respectively corresponding to the classroom instruction, the teachers, and the students.     

An Analysis of Pragmatic Failure in Intercultural Communication

With the globalization of the world economy,intercultural communication is becoming more and more important.In China,more and more people learn English,Even though they have little difficulty in understanding the literal meaning of utterances when confronted with authentic communication situations,they may not interpret the utterances correctly,or express themselves appropriately.The problem of pragmatic failure has been holding an important position in the study of intercultural communication.In this paper I will mainly analyze the phenomena of pragmatic failure in senior middle school students’daily conversations in intercultural communication,and discuss the nature and causes of pragmatic failure in intercultural communication situations.After we gain a better understanding of the phenomena,recommendations will be made on how to avoid pragmatic failure,and to increase intercultural communicative competence in English.     

A Survey on Pragmatic Competence of English Majors in an Agriculture University

Based on the questionnaire of 80 English majors in an agricultural university,the author tries to get a better understanding of the practical situation of their pragmatic competence.After analyzing the results in the survey,the author finds out the reasons which may cause those failures,and then puts forward proposals for teachers in the agricultural university to improve students’pragmatic competence.
