This paper aims at investigating effective classroom-based instructive methods that facilitate the development of pragmatic competence of the intermediate-level adult English learners in China,who have gained relatively high grammatical competence but low pragmatic competence.The paper starts with the importance and components of pragmatic competence.It then examines what should be taught to help develop learners’ pragmatic competence.The paper focuses on some explicit instructive methods adopted by the author in her conversational English class that may raise learners’ awareness of pragmatic knowledge and enhance learners’ practice of pragmatic abilities:1) Encouragement of learners’ observation of pragmatic phenomena by English speakers from authentic audio-visual materials;2) Discussion of linguistic variations for each speech act and strategies of carrying out certain speech acts according to contextual cues;3) Role-play tasks engaging students in different speech events and communicative actions.The effectiveness of these methods is shown by test results after at the end of the course.  相似文献

This paper is to present a typology of refusal strategies which may be employed in the analysis of refusal performance from a discourse approach.Some previous research carried out is reviewed in order to classify non-native speakers’ production of this speech act.Then,the suggested taxonomy will be described in a systematized way from an interlanguage pragmatic perspective and within a conversational analysis framework.Finally,it is emphasized that effective communicative competence plays an important role in the production of this face-threatening speech act of refusing.  相似文献

The euphemism is a phenomenon of language variation with different language varieties. And this phenomenon is closely related with social context. Register, as a concrete representation of context, especially its tenor of discourse, makes great influence on what kind of euphemism and what level of euphemism people will use to achieve effective communication. This study based on researcher’s adult oral English teaching experience,takes an adult English learner as a case study to explore the characteristics of an autonomous English learner.From analysis of data (observation and teaching diary),this study elaborates three common characteristics of an autonomous learner:(1) Firstly,an autonomous learner has a high motivation;(2) Secondly,an autonomous learner is good at trying different learning strategies,especially metacognitive strategy to manage learning proceeding.(3) Lastly,an autonomous learner readily takes charge of their own learning by making plan and reflecting on it.Meanwhile,this study presents teacher’s role as a facilitator and consultor and some factors that need taking into consideration,offering a precious experience for future’s fostering of autonomous English learners.  相似文献

Teaching English as a foreign language is not tantamount to elaborating on syntactic structures or learning new vocabulary and expressions, but should incorporate some cultural elements which are intertwined with the language itself.
