语篇是指任何不完全受句子语法约束的在一定语境下表示完整语义的自然语言,是实际使用的语言单位。本文从介绍语篇理论的核心内容“衔接”与“连贯”出发,提出了培养语篇能力是提高学习者语言能力的关键这一观点,并阐述了语篇教学思想对于英语教学的启示。     

Correlations between learners’ initial EFL proficiency and variables of clicker-aided flipped EFL class

Although the flipped class has been hotly discussed, the clicker-aided flipped EFL class (CFEC) still remains a mystery for most scholars. This study aims to determine the correlations between the initial EFL proficiency and other variables of the clicker-aided EFL flipped class. The sample was made up of randomly selected 79 participants (Female =38; male =41), who received the clicker-aided EFL flipped class for one academic semester. It is found that there is a significantly positive relationship between the initial and the final EFL proficiency, motivation levels and cultural awareness in CFEC, whereas there is a negative relationship between initial EFL proficiency and cognitive loads in CFEC. The initial EFL proficiency is therefore an essential factor to influence the effectiveness of the flipped class. Future studies may consider this when exploring the educational technology aided flipped class.     

English spoken here? To what extent are transnational EFL students motivated to speak English outside the classroom?

This article examines the claim that a fully immersive English language learning experience can be ensured by universities engaged in transnational education through offshore campuses. Taking as a case study one South East Asian offshore campus of a Western university, the inquiry was designed to discover the extent to which students did, in reality, utilise their English language skills on campus outside the classroom. Drawing on the responses of 260 students, the findings suggest that, far from ‘full immersion’, students tend to revert to their own language in most interactions, unless in the presence of a teacher. The article goes on to suggest a number of reasons for this and discusses the factors underlying both the students’ reluctance and the failure of the institution’s strategy.

一直以来,关于EFL课堂教学效果的评判标准总是取决于两大因素:英语写作的熟练程度与英语语言掌握的熟练程度。学生如何谋篇、组织、修改、编辑的批判性思维与其英语语言掌握熟练程度处于同等重要地位。实践证明,过分依赖语言因素,通过单纯性作文计分与评阅修改的传统作文教学远远不能满足新的EFL(English as A Foreign Language)教学要求。在我国,EFL作文教学通常被当做专事语法修改与理论讲授的枯燥课程。尽管也有些EFL教师在课堂讲授组织写作思路或主题句写作。但语法与单词错误始终是困扰EFL师生的一个永恒的难题。EFL写作教师应该找出每位学生在写作专项以及英语熟练度方面的具体强项与弱项。只有ESL写作教师洞悉学生语言、语法中的具体缺陷,并予以纠正,才能达到ESL写作教学的效率最大化。
