Gaining Insight into Business Telecommunications Students Through the Assessment of Learning Styles

The assessment of student learning styles can be of significant value for developing and evaluating an appropriate mix of pedagogical techniques and activities. With this in mind, learning style preferences were collected from over 300 undergraduate business telecommunications students. These set of data show that a breadth of learning style profiles are exhibited by undergraduate business telecommunications students. Most importantly, this article demonstrates a process to evaluate whether or not the current course structure either favors or disadvantages any particular learning style profile. Because there are many learning style profiles present, the evidence that no single profile is disadvantaged gives the instructor confidence in the mix of pedagogical techniques and activities that are employed in this particular course.

Managing University Telecommunications

The telecommunications industry in Australia is undergoing changes at least as fundamental as those confronting tertiary institutions. The most important feature of the telecommunications change (generally known as de‐regulation) is that customers now have the freedom to choose service providers on the open market. This new freedom provides opportunities for financial savings with improved telecommunications; it also provides opportunites for institutions to pay inflated prices for inferior service.

Achieving the potential benefits of de‐regulation requires an astute manager who understands telephone system operations and maintenance. This manager must also comprehend the problems of allocating resources individually and collectively. Comprehensive records of the technical performance of a telecommunications system are an essential pre‐requisite to competent management of that system and an institutional telecommunications policy is just as important.

Internationalizing the Business Curriculum: Bridging the Academic Culture Gap

Rapid global change, driven especially by the telecommunications and computing industries, are rapidly transforming the international economic, social, and cultural landscape. Affected are both urban and rural businesses who face intense competition at home and abroad. If the U.S. is to continue to maintain a competitive advantage in the global marketplace, educational institutions must prepare the next generation of leaders for a pluralistic world in which multiculturalism dominates. This paper addresses one aspect of preparing university graduates for the global setting: the meshing of the business and economics disciplines with other relevant curricula. It describes first the underlying philosophy that supports federal funding for integrative initiatives designed to enhance students' multi‐cultural competence. Second, in the form of a case study, it recounts the experience of a particular program that was successfully implemented recently at the University of Kentucky. Third, this case study can serve as a model for integrative cross‐curricular efforts at institutions of higher learning elsewhere.
