图书馆自动化系统开源软件的比较研究

在调研与实际操作的基础上,对国外三种比较有代表性的图书馆自动化系统开源软件(Koha,PHPMyLibrary,PMB)进行介绍,并从基本技术特征、系统功能和技术服务三方面对这三个系统进行比较分析,以期深入理解图书馆自动化开源软件的设计理念,为开源软件在国内图书馆自动化系统建设中的推广应用提供参考.     

Koha在中小图书馆建设中的应用

开源软件Koha具有参与门槛低,免安裝,易维护,管理方便等特点,其模块化设计也为中小型图书馆提供了多样化的选择;Koha在中小图书馆建设中起着积极作用;本文从政府、图书馆联盟、图书馆开源社区、图书馆、图书馆员等各个层面,就推广Koha系统在我国中小图书馆建设中的应用提出一些想法和建议。     

开放源码软件在图书馆自动化中的运用

探讨图书馆自动化使用开放源码软件的解决方案,通过对开放源码软件本身所具有的价格便宜、应用程序透明和使用弹性等特点的分析,尝试提出低成本图书馆自动化软件整体解决方案.     

美国图书馆开源自动化系统的比较分析

通过对图书馆网站目录数据库(lib-web-cat)数据的整理和分析发现,美国图书馆主要使用3种开源自动化系统:Koha系统、Evergreen系统和OPALS系统。这3种系统在基本技术特点、支持的标准协议、功能特点及维护服务等方面各具优势。经对比分析发现,Koha和Evergreen的系统功能相对完善,能够满足各种类型图书馆的需求,也能为我国图书馆自动化系统的设计和开发提供借鉴。     

基于构件技术的图书馆自动化系统的开发

通过对国内外图书馆自动化系统发展现状和趋势的分析研究, 指出基于客户机ö服务器体系结构、有良好的网络功能和用户界面的新一代自动化系统将成为目前研究和开发的热点。基于构件的软件开发可以复用已有的应用系统、应用框架, 开发出的软件有良好的可维护性和软件资源的可复用性, 并有较强的用户需求变化适应能力。我们按照构件化的软件开发指导思想, 设计实现了中科院新一代文献信息自动化系统。

文章选取了四种国产图书馆自动化集成系统,从它们的系统功能、技术特点以及数据处理几方面进行比较分析,概括了目前图书馆自动化软件的发展趋势,同时对我国图书馆自动化软件市场的发展提出了参考性建议.

Cataloging in a Remote Location: A Case Study of International Collaboration in the Galapagos Islands

The Corley Smith Library is a small, special library located at the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands. Currently, the library is managed by international volunteer librarians in collaboration with Station staff and local volunteers. Recently the library migrated its online public access catalog to Koha. We describe the process of selecting an open-source integrated library system and implementing Koha. Cataloging in this remote location presents challenges related to technology, staff expertise, language, local practices, and obtaining supplies. We define the strategies to address these issues, including long-term goals of copy cataloging with Z39.50 and remote cataloging by volunteer librarians.     

A Survey Study on the Adoption and Implementation of Automation Projects in Federal University Libraries in the South-West of Nigeria

This article reports on a survey study on the adoption and implementation of automation projects in federal university libraries in the south-west of Nigeria (SWN). The objectives are to ascertain the implementation status of automation projects, discuss the accruable benefits, investigate the library management system software being used, determine the modules already activated and fully implemented and their web presence, highlight the challenges encountered, draw conclusions and recommendations on enhancing successful implementation of library automation projects in Nigeria. The method used for gathering data for the study is questionnaire-based survey, using google form template. The findings of the study are that all the six federal university libraries in the SWN have adopted and implemented automation; two out of them are using open source integrated library automation software (Koha), one library uses in-house built integrated library system (ILS), while the remaining three use different proprietary software for their automation projects; and all the ILSs being used for automation projects are interoperable. The conclusion from the study is that the effective performance of libraries lies in the ability to access research materials and other relevant information contents with remarkable ease. This becomes achievable when libraries adopt and implement automation in their respective domains.     

网络图书馆的新模式——基于Linux操作系统的中心/成员图书馆方案

由于Internet 的迅速发展, 传统图书馆正在向网络化图书馆方向转变。一般传统的图书馆自动化系统的软硬件设备包括Unix 小型机和工作站, 大型商业化的RDBMS (关系型数据库管理系统)。这样的一套软硬件设备的价格比较昂贵(比如一套IBM DB2 v7. 1 数据库系统2000 年报价是2 万多美元) , 对于缺乏资金的中小型的图书馆来说, 这样的系统是可望不可及的。但是, 随着Internet 的发展, 许多免费软件的兴起为中小型图书馆购置图书馆自动化系统提供了机会。根据这种情况, 我们提出了一个低成本的基于Linux 等免费软件的网络图书馆自动化方案: 中心馆/成员馆整体解决方案。     

21st Century Library Systems

ABSTRACT

Less than a decade into the 21st century, perhaps it is more fitting to describe library automation as approaching its 80th birthday, is a time to look back and carefully measure moving forward. Since the introduction of a punch card circulation system at the University of Texas in 1936, through the advent and perseverance of the MARC record, and following the ebb and flow of nearly 75 different library automation vendors, library automation has come a long way. For some, however, it has not come nearly far enough. If one were to stop the history of library automation in the mid-1990s and wish away the dominance of the Internet, libraries and patrons might have been quite content with the state-of–the-art as it existed 15 years ago. But wishing away the Internet is like envisioning a world without electricity and indoor plumbing; as such, that 1990s library automation summit is now a plateau from which many library technologists and futurists can see no launch pad to a next-generation of library software and services.

Building Cataloging Capacity for Libraries in South Sudan: A North–South–South Collaboration

In the developing world, a common trend is to have north–south collaborations constituting most of the continuous professional development (CPD) activities for librarians. The emerging drift highlighted in this article is a north–south–south initiative aimed at rebuilding the University of Juba Library through capacity-building of the library staff. This article will illuminate the process of equipping library staff with cataloging skills in the absence of previous library training. This endeavor is a result of the collaborative efforts of Makerere University Library (MakLib) in Uganda and the University of Bergen Library (UoBL) in Norway under the Juba Library Automation Project (JULAP). JULAP's main objective is to rebuild the University of Juba Library with the components of library automation and training of library staff. This article will concentrate on the practical training of the library staff in cataloging and the hands-on training on the Koha integrated library system to lay the groundwork for computerized library services for the University of Juba. This article will also highlight the challenges and lessons learned so far while articulating strategies for the future.     

Phased Migration to Koha: Our Library's Experience

Landman Library is two-thirds of the way through a three-stage process of migrating to the Koha open-source integrated library system (http://koha-community.org). We are an academic library with roughly 143,000 volumes, six professional librarians, and three support staff. The migration to open source was driven by the desire to access our own data as well the need for more flexibility in our public search interface. After evaluating two open-source solutions, we selected Koha because it included modules for all major functions of the library. The phased migration process allowed us to spread costs out over multiple fiscal years and to make the most urgent changes sooner than would have otherwise been possible. The two phases that we have completed so far have taught us various lessons about project management, problem solving, and communication between the library and IT. We learned to involve stakeholders very early, provide specific examples when reporting problems, and have a designated liaison between library staff and developers. We successfully migrated to the Koha staff client on June 1, 2009, and are working on changes to our Web site to incorporate the Koha public catalog.
