A Study on Connotative Meanings of “马” and “horse” from the Perspec tives of Intercultural Communication

In an attempt to understand different cultures in the use of idioms which related to animals,this study collected,compared,and analyzed Chinese and English idioms on"马"and"horse"by references to a large number of dictionaries.The results show that in Chinese,the idioms on horse has the following features:above all,it covers evenly in commendatory,neutral,and derogatory senses;more specifically,it has a direct link to war in the commendatory sense while in neutral and derogatory senses,its references have been broadened;another common phenomenon is that horses in Chinese idioms are usually a large collection.However,English idioms in the use of horse favors on the derogatory sense since they focus more on the nature of horse-stubborn,arrogant,and even condescending.If horses are praised,they mostly refer to the talented people rather than any other things.The similarities and differences in the use of"马"and"horse"help to probe into the color of culture between eastern and western countries.

Rising Acceptance of Life and Negative Capability—A Reading of John Keats’s Odes

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty"-the famous line in English romantic poet John Keats’Ode on a Grecian Urn-has triggered wide discussion and numerous interpretations. From the point of"negative capability", a phrase first coined by Keats himself, this paper is attempting to display the consistency between that poetic line and the poet’s creation and life attitude on the whole. For this purpose, this paper will mainly introduce and interpret five of Keats’famous odes in the order of their display of his"rising acceptance of life": Ode to a Nightingale, Ode on a Grecian Urn, Ode to Autumn, Ode on Melancholy and Ode on Indolence. This paper would like to show in the first three Keats’s positive quest in different aspects and on certain levels, the fourth the underlying tone of life’s polyphonous song, and the final the"negative capability"that constitutes his healthy attitude toward creation and life. Finally, this paper hopes to demonstrate that it is such capability that enables the poet to growingly accept life, and it is also essential to him as a philosophical poet.

In China, Warring States Period was imbued with chaos of wars and the whole society was in a state of ferment. The disordered phase in ideological area, as the most direct reflection of the change, was characterized by that all the old ethical standard had been badly weaken, even failed to explain the moral facts. In terms of common people, they were confused and puzzled by the questions as "what is language?" and "what is the standard of speaking and behavior?" Some ancient scholars pinned these problems upon the reversal of "ming" (名) and "shi" (实). As a result, to rectify names and to clarify the name of ethics became a must for reconstructing the old proprieties and system. Among those scholars and thinkers, Xun Zi firstly proposed Zhengming to state the relationship between a name and the thing it represents in a systematical way. Informal and formal approaches to communicative language teaching

The main purpose of this article is to give some clarity to the use of the term "communicative" in describing approaches to foreign or second language teaching. It is suggested that a distinction be drawn between "informal" communicative approaches which promote second language "acquisition", and "formal" communicative approaches which promote "learning". This distinction between "acquisition" and "learning", which is taken from the work of Stephen Krashen, is carefully explained and the conditions for achieving both in the classroom considered. In addition it is suggested that there is a need actively to teach pupils how to make use of conscious "learnt" knowledge in order to "monitor" their performance in a second language appropriately.
