‘I’d like to know why’: cultural capital and MA in education students’ interpretation of feedback commentaries

This article discusses the results of an investigation into selected MA in Education students’ interpretation of feedback to their written assignments in a teaching and learning institution in the UK, using the framework of cultural capital and acculturation. A case study method was adopted to investigate four participants’ thoughts and experiences with feedback over a period of two semesters. Participants were asked to go through a think-aloud process while responding to feedback from tutors to their assignments. Results of the think-aloud were used as springboard for interviews conducted with students. The article argues that students’ diverse and variable interpretations of tutor feedback can be explained by Bourdieu’s notion of ‘connaissance’ or knowledge as cultural capital. Additionally, students were found to have subscribed to the ‘acculturation’ process modelled by tutors in feedback provision.     

Equity and leadership: research-based strategies for school leaders

Principals are required by policy, regulation, legislation and democratic discourse to promote equity of outcomes. This integrated review investigates research on equity issues facing five student groups: special needs students; religious, cultural and racial minorities; groups disadvantaged by socioeconomic status; gender groups; and students differentiated by their sexual orientations. Sixteen research-based strategies for reducing the gap in achievement between advantaged and disadvantaged students are generated, the strategies being organised within four domains of principal influence: curriculum interpretation, instruction, assessment, and community involvement.     

Visual Aids and the Enhancement of Communication in Africa

Educational visual aids and illustrations in African institutions are mostly imported from overseas, and the few local productions tend to be Western‐orientated in style. However, research on the technical and design elements of visual aids, their cultural implications and socio‐economic factors all point to considerable differences of perception and interpretation of visuals between African and Western students. The paper discusses these differences and considers their implications to designers and producers of learning materials for African students.

Mitigate cross-cultural pragmatic failure in interpretation with project-based learning

Mistakes in interpretation are concerned with not merely poor language competence but also incapability of smooth crosscultural communication,which indicates that interpreters should be more competent in pragmatics consistent to the cultural models of relevance.The analysis demonstrates the importance of understanding cross-cultural pragmatics and some implications for teaching,particularly in the EFL environment.Project-based learning,conforming to the requirements of personnel training against the background of globalization,can well serve the goal of developing students’ overall cross-cultural communication competence in interpretation courses,when culture and its impacts on pragmatic competence of interpretation are not left out in both the in-class and after-class activities,but are dealt with in a sensitive and open-minded way.
