A study of serum lipid profile part-1: Establishment of normal reference values of serum lipid levels in healthy vegetarian population of Gujarat

Fasting samples of 1329 apparently healthy vegetarian Gujarati population were tested for total cholesterol, triglycerides and three major fractions of lipoproteins, i.e. high density lipoproteins, low density lipoproteins and very low density lipoproteins. All the values showed marked increase with the age. Except for serum triglycerides, values differ in males and females in the age group of above 45 years. Compared to Northern Indian population low density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein values were higher, but values of triglycerides and very low density lipoproteins were lower. There is no significant difference in total cholesterol values. Compared to Southern Indian population low density lipoprotein and very low density lipoprotein values were higher but values of triglycerides, total cholesterol and high density lipoprotein were lower. All serum lipid values were significantly lower than the Westem population. The range of values for both the sexes is presented for different age groups.

Charting Sociotechnical Dimensions of Values for Design Research

The relationship of values to technology is an important topic in the fields of information studies, human–computer interaction, media studies, and science and technology studies, but definitions and attributes of values differ within and among these fields. We suggest that researchers currently conflate multiple categories when they discuss values. Some of these categories are attributes of the source of values (i.e., people, systems, and hybrid assemblages), and others are attributes of the values themselves. This article disambiguates values in sociotechnical systems by providing a framework to describe where and how values are negotiated and enacted by people, institutions, and technology. The framework includes three dimensions that pertain to the source of values (agency, unit, and assemblage) and three dimensions that pertain to attributes of values (salience, intention, and enactment) to enable precision and comparison across this research trajectory. We illustrate each dimension with examples from the values and design literature.

利用多维Neville算法实现基于转导思想的函数估计

根据转导思想的函数估计 ,不用估计函数的模型和参数 ,直接估计函数在给定点的值 ,从根本上区别于传统的函数估计方法 ,但具体的实现算法是一个公开的问题 .讨论使用多维Neville算法实现基于转导思想的函数估计的问题 .利用投影的方法 ,将传统的Neville算法推广到了多维空间 ,在数值计算中引入了核函数的思想 ,从而解决了多维空间的计算问题 ,得到利用多维的Neville算法实现函数估计的方法 .数值试验的结果表明 ,这种方法成功地克服了函数插值的龙格 (Runge)现象 ,有很好的逼近效果 ,并且可以处理多维的函数估计问题 ;同时也给出了对核函数参数进行估计这个难题的一些讨论 .该算法对转导思想的实现提供了一个崭新的途径 .

Establishment of reference intervals in Indian population

The central role of the laboratory scientist is to aid the clinician, in interpreting observed values, by providing relevant reference values in a convenient and practical form. In India, reference values used in laboratories have been established in the western population. But these can be questioned due to differences in genetic load, lifestyle, and diet. This review highlights the approach for establishing reference values in our population using the IFCC guidelines and our observations from our data as compared to the reported values in our laboratory.     

An algorithm for the calculation of exact term discrimination values

Term discrimination values have been suggested as an effective means for the selection and weighting of index terms in automatic document retrieval systems. This paper reports an algorithm for the calculation of term discrimination values that is sufficiently fast in operation to permit the use of exact values, rather than the approximate values studied in previous work. Evidence is presented to show that the relationship between term discrimination and term frequency is crucially dependent upon the type of inter-document similarity measure that is used for the calculation of the discrimination values.
