The role of motivation in language learning has been studied since the 1960s. It is indeed one of the most important areas of linguistics. This paper suggests strategies of motivating language learners and focuses on the role which motivation can play in language learning. The concept of motivation from different points of view is defined, a number of suggestions on how to motivate language learners are presented and the role of motivation based on various motivational theories are highlighted. With regard to the role of motivation in language learning, it is concluded that motivation plays an increasingly important role in many aspects, such as identifying with the target language society, achieving long-term and short-term goals, improving language learners‘ internal and external powers and exerting a group force. It also indicates that there should be more research areas to be examined and a long way is probably requlred to go in future theoretical and practical study.  相似文献

Many scholars have contributed to the research of Empty Categories since 1980s; however, most of them just concentrated on PRO, pro and variable, with little attention paid to NP-trace. Under the theoretical framework of GB theory, this paper will make a comparative study on NP-trace between English and Chinese from the aspect of Binding theory, the restrictions on NP-movement, and the motivation for NP-movement, in order to find out whether the NP-trace in Chinese is the same as or different from that in English, the result of which may indicate some syntactic features of the two languages.  相似文献

This paper first presents a critical review of Noels,Pelletier,Clement and Vallerand's(2000) study and then explores Gardner's socio-educational model and the significance of motivation as a contributing factor in second language acquisition.Language learners have very strong instrumental motivation but their integrative motivation and correct learning attitude(or intrinsic motivation) need to be further developed.Based on the analysis,the author puts forward some suggestions on improving the quality of language teaching for language learners in order to make their language learning more effective.  相似文献

In this paper,first the author provides a brief review of contemporary psychological views on motivation and motivation in SLL.The author then discusses Williams and Burden’ s (1997) cognitive model of motivation,which suggests that both internal and external factors are significant in motivation.And next the author selects two internal factors (attitudes to language learning in general and attitudes to target language community and culture) and two external factors (parents and teachers),discussing their relevance to motivation in language learning.After that the author refers in her answer both to the wider literature on motivation and her own experience of motivation as a language teacher and learner.The author concludes the paper by drawing some practical implications from employing this model.  相似文献

For many years now," autonomy" in learning has been a topic of widespread discussion in educational field.Accordingly,it is Henry Holec who introduced learner autonomy to the field of second language in his project report to the Council of Europe in 1981.Motivation is also a widely used psychological term in our daily life and research.Both learner autonomy and motivation are important factors in influencing learning effects.Many researchers conduct studies on learner autonomy and motivation.There are also some studies on the correlation between learner autonomy and motivation in SLL(Second Language Learning).However,few of them focus on the effect of learner autonomy on motivation.Thus,it makes an attempt to investigate whether learner autonomy has an enhancement effect on motivation.It combines motivation and learner autonomy together to find some effective and efficient ways of promoting foreign or second language learning.In another way,it enriches learner autonomy research.It holds that learner autonomy is a very important factor in influencing motivation.It will make a combination between learner autonomy and motivation in SLL to find some new ways of promoting learners’ motivation and learning efficiency.A survey methodology has been employed which consists of qualitative and quantitative methods.Specifically,both questionnaire and interview have been conducted in the research.  相似文献

Image is not only an essential part,but also a major means to convey the implications in English poems.It is a literal and concrete representation of a sensory experience of an object.The rendering of images in English poems into Chinese can be guided by the dynamic equivalent translation theory put forward by Dr.Eugene A Nida.The theory emphasizes the roughly equivalent response of the target language receptors to the TL text to that of the source language receptors to the SL text.To achieve a Dynamic Equivalence,methods like Direct Translation,Addition,and Substitution can be employed in the translation of images in English poems.  相似文献

The "reproduction theory" was conceived and born in the research into educational inequalities in Western countries. Famous as the theory is, when it is to be applied in the research into education in China, a few factors must be taken into consideration: the subjects investigated must be educational inequalities that have come into being in the context of China; a shift in theoretical approach and expression is needed, with the Functional approach as the dominant research method; in terms of the standpoint of the researcher, whose academic mission and realization of social ideals should be closely and fully integrated; in terms of research method, the principle of combining both the macroscopic and microscopic approaches and analysis on the basis of actual facts should be adopted so as to effectively analyze and solve the problems plaguing the education of China and to promote the localization of the western reproduction theory in China.  相似文献
