Requests for proposals for library automation

Many health sciences libraries are now considering integrated automated systems for an investment of several hundred thousand dollars. The request for proposals (RFPs) is the usual method of selecting candidate vendors for close inspection of promising systems. This paper draws upon the experience of the Library of Rush University and that of twelve other health sciences libraries. The libraries were interviewed by telephone using a short questionnaire that asked them to compare the RFPs with the systems actually obtained and their experiences in implementing them. The libraries were also asked, with the benefit of hindsight, what would they have done differently. Four vendors were also interviewed by telephone, in order to get their point of view.

Courses: Intercultural Communication

Objectives: Students will achieve the following learning outcomes: (1) demonstrate knowledge of intercultural systems by identifying roots of intercultural communication conflict, (2) address intercultural problems by taking action within the context of their own lives, (3) collaborate with peers to problem solve based on voices from Twitter, assigned academic resources and intercultural competence theories in class, and (4) assemble and deliver their plan through a blog and 15-minute presentation.     

Proposal for a National Library Plan for Iran

Abstract

This study surveyed Government school libraries in Benue State before the creation of Kogi State from Benue. The study was carried out using 100 non-pretested questionnaire forms of which only 70 were returned with sufficient information for analysis and generalization.

The study focused on how over 60 government school libraries, scattered over a large geographical area with a poor road network and few funds, are centrally administered. Further, the study covered the extent of co-operation between school libraries and their relationship to the central administration at the Ministry of Education and other library authorities elsewhere. The acquisition policy, staffing, processing, distribution and inspection, as well as operational standards are discussed and suggestions for improvement are supplied. Possible areas for further research relating to the study are raised in conclusion.

教育学的门户网站——起跑点与教育进行时数字图书馆

起跑点（Starting Point： Teaching Entry Level Geoscience）和教育进行时（Pedagogy in Action）这两个数字图书馆都是由卡尔顿大学（Carleton College）的科学教育中心（SERC）开发的项目。它们作为SERC教育学图书馆的门户,旨在为地球科学教育工作者提供高质量的教学方法和相关的教学经验,同时通过鼓励教学者上传相关的教学案例,反映自己的教学方法和教学活动,并探索新的教学方法,为教育工作者提供教学方面的资源。这两个数字图书馆存在着紧密的联系。文章从该馆建设、馆藏组织、技术特征、界面设计、服务特点等方面分别对这两个数字图书馆进行了评述,并给出了作者的评价与建议。     

Selection for preservation: considerations for the health sciences

Just as no health sciences library can afford to collect every work on a subject, neither can any health sciences library afford to preserve every item that is added to its collection. In decision making for collection development, health sciences libraries apply a set of selection criteria. Those same criteria have direct application in selection for preservation decisions. This paper summarizes the literature of selection for preservation, describes the scholarly record of biomedicine, and presents criteria for selection for preservation decisions. The preservation priorities statement for microfilming of monographs and serials in the National Library of Medicine collection is included as an appendix.     

Prospects for the application of scientometric methods for forecasting

Forecasting studies, which are conducted in all the developed economies of the world, are one of the fastest growing applications of scientometrics. Currently, in Russia there is a formed state Technology Foresight System, which creates a new format for the future development of research and for interaction among the key players in the national innovation system. Considering the new institutional environment of forecasting projects in Russia and the international trends in the relevant research environments, scientometric methods for the monitoring, analysis, and forecasting of the development of science and technology are identified as one of the most important methods. Specific demands and trends, which will soon have a substantial impact on the entire area of scientometrics, are formulated.

Metaphors for learning: A cognitive exercise for students

The challenge of teaching first-year students basic library skills is to make the process interesting and relevant. In this collaborative project between professor and librarian, metaphors in everyday life were used as a springboard for library research. Through the metaphor project, Honors students learned how to approach a topic, break down its parts, brainstorm searchable words, and make assumptions about ways to research. Most importantly, they learned to evaluate the results of their research to ensure that, in the materials located, they had actually found a real life application of their metaphor.     

Continuing Education for Librarians - Training for Online Searching

Rapidly developing technology has changed the environment in libraries so that some degree of computer search ability is required now in order to give standard, non-obsolete reference service. New library school graduates regularly receive a basic understanding of DIALOG, BRS and other database utilities, but some feel more inclined toward working with computers than others. At the same time, seasoned librarians are faced with new learning requirements for computer searching. How do librarians in the "transition generation" handle the change required by professional technological development? A wide range of responses - from enthusiastic to reluctant - requires flexibility and variety in training and continuing education methods. This paper will address the human factor in some issues of broad technological change. The authors will offer some observations about how we as a profession are adapting to the new environment of computer-enhanced information. A case study of one library's experience with training and continuing education for online searching will illustrate a response to this changing library environment.     

我国老年人信息素养教育的理论导向研究

老年人信息素养教育的理论导向决定了其价值定位与发展方向.对老年人信息素养教育的相关理论导向进行分析,进而指出其存在的不足:以康乐理论、社会适应理论为主导的理论导向忽视了老年人的社会主体地位,权利理论、福利理论、终身教育与终身学习理论等理论导向又面临着现实基础薄弱的窘境,因而确定以促进老年人社会参与为导向的理论选择才是我国老年人信息素养教育的可持续发展之计.参考文献28.     

A case for harnessing information technology for rural development

In spite of planned development in the independent India, gaps remain in its basic infrastructure, adding to the variety of structural disadvantages and disparities. Studies on information systems serving rural communities have focused on a few sectors like agriculture, health or education. The paper touches upon the role of traditional media, developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs), the digital divide, and computerization at the rural level in various parts of the country. An experiment conducted by the National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad, on the use of IT to deliver information through the establishment of Public Information Kiosks (PIKs) is described in detail. Issues that were considered for humanizing the establishment of PIKs were identified. It is concluded that organizational linkages and networking capacities are to be strengthened for ‘digital unity’ to provide multiple opportunities to the rural communities to exploit local resources for their self-development.     

Prepping for class: A practical approach for teaching librarians

Successful teaching requires careful preparation. This article presents steps for designing information literacy sessions, including strategies for dealing with technology failures and human issues during the actual delivery of the class.     

关于《中图法》应用语言学类目的修订建议

20世纪以来,应用语言学发展迅猛,研究领域不断扩展,文献出版量迅速增长。作为中国图书分类界通用性和权威性的工具书的《中图法》在这一研究领域的类目设置上明显存在着许多问题,严重影响了文献的分编工作。笔者就这一问题进行了研究与阐述,并提出了具体的修订建议。
