The ineffectiveness of within-document term frequency in text classification

For the purposes of classification it is common to represent a document as a bag of words. Such a representation consists of the individual terms making up the document together with the number of times each term appears in the document. All classification methods make use of the terms. It is common to also make use of the local term frequencies at the price of some added complication in the model. Examples are the naïve Bayes multinomial model (MM), the Dirichlet compound multinomial model (DCM) and the exponential-family approximation of the DCM (EDCM), as well as support vector machines (SVM). Although it is usually claimed that incorporating local word frequency in a document improves text classification performance, we here test whether such claims are true or not. In this paper we show experimentally that simplified forms of the MM, EDCM, and SVM models which ignore the frequency of each word in a document perform about at the same level as MM, DCM, EDCM and SVM models which incorporate local term frequency. We also present a new form of the naïve Bayes multivariate Bernoulli model (MBM) which is able to make use of local term frequency and show again that it offers no significant advantage over the plain MBM. We conclude that word burstiness is so strong that additional occurrences of a word essentially add no useful information to a classifier.     

Information management through integration of distributed resources

Duke University Medical Center conducted a strategic planning process focused on information management needs beginning in 1983 and ending in 1985. That effort concluded that the institution was ready to establish an Integrated Academic Information Management System (IAIMS). A model was proposed in which information management was to be achieved through integrated distributed resources. The elements of the IAIMS model are ongoing policy development and planning; communications; an electronic library or resource inventory; coordination of the development or selection of the end-user function; user support; and ongoing evaluation. This model is being tested to determine its effectiveness in meeting the administrative, patient care, research, and educational needs of a basic science department and a clinical science department at Duke University.     

Responding to Change: Challenges for Professional Education in the Museum Sector

Abstract This paper reflects on the changes confronting educators involved in museum professional development, drawing on the experience gained in working with a wide range of learners, instructors and content issues through the Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. Reflecting the society as a whole, professional education programs are called to respond to the needs of learners, and to institutional priorities for competency development and instructional design and delivery issues. Given the near‐universal pressures on museums and educational institutions, it is hoped that these impressions and perspectives are of broad relevance to a range of academic and professional museum studies programs across Canada and beyond.

As has long been clear, civilization has witnessed perpetual development of individual needs that become ever more diversified and complicated. The character and structure of human demands are fundamentally connected with the nature of information space for the social world and with the progress of informatics. Prospects for the sustainable development of society are internally dependent on the development of reasonable needs for the social world and the establishment of the information society.     

ACOGQUEST: the model phase of the IAIMS project of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In 1990, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) became the first national organization to receive a model phase Integrated Academic Information Management System (IAIMS) grant from the National Library of Medicine. The goal of the ACOG model phase project is to develop and test a prototype for an integrated system that will meet the needs of ACOG and NAACOG members in patient care, research, education, and administrative information. The model phase goal will be accomplished primarily through ACOGQUEST, an integrated approach to providing accurate, current, quality-filtered information to ACOG and NAACOG members in a variety of formats. Another method of information dissemination now being tested is a heuristic-based patient management database, which will include a concise, interactive display of ACOG-reviewed information that can be incorporated into patient records.

针对传统的Markov链模型不能有效的表征长串访问序列所蕴含的丰富的用户行为特征(用户类别特征、访问兴趣迁移特征)的缺点,提出混合隐Markov链浏览模型.混合隐Markov链模型使用多个不同的模型来区分不同类别用户的浏览特征,并为每个类别的用户设置了能跟踪捕捉其访问兴趣变化的类隐Markov链模型,能更好地对WWW长串访问序列的复杂特征进行建模,在真实WWW站点访问日志数据上的用户聚类实验与个性化推荐实验的结果表明,混合隐Markov链模型与传统的Markov链模型相比,具有更理想的聚类性能和推荐性能.
