CAS announces new academicians

Twenty-nine prominent Chinese scientists have been elected as CAS Members and five of their colleagues from US, France and Russia as CAS Foreign Members in 2007. The announcement was made by CAS Vice President LI Jinghai at a press conference held on 27 December, 2007 in Beijing. CAS President LU Yongxiang was present at the meeting.     

CAS forum for young scientists held in Yunnan

Co-organized by the CAS Graduate University （GUCAS） and the CAS Kunming Branch, 2007 Sciencel00, a CAS annual forum for outstanding young scientists, was opened on 28 November, 2007 at the CAS Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden （XTBG）, with an attendance of more than 90 experts and scholars from various CAS affiliates.     

Maiden voyage of a novel research ship

Shiyan-1, a new research vessel of CAS, recently accomplished its first official journey in South China Sea. CAS leaders, including CAS President LU Yongxiang and CAS Vice President JIANG Mianheng, were present at the ceremony marking its maiden voyage held on 9 May in Sanya City, south China＇s Hainan Province.     

Recent CAS Achievements in Life Sciences

The Endemic Genera of SeedPlants of ChinaThe Endemic Genera of SeedPlants of China is a monographcompiled and written by a group ofresearchers headed by Prof. YingJunsheng (Tsun-shen Ying) of theCAS Institute of Botany. CAS Invites International Panel to Evaluate Its Institute

At the invitation of the CAS, a group of eight international experts convened in Nanjing on October 7th and 8th to evaluate the CAS Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology (NIGPAS). This is the first move of its kind ever made by CAS at the academy level. Earlier this year several CAS institutes had made similar assessments by themselves.     

To serve and promote science development via innovation

CAS should stick to the principle of rendering service to, and giving impetus for, the development of China＇s science enterprise by making S＆T innovations, said CAS President LU Yongxiang. The CAS president made the remarks in a recent talk to communicate the gist of the winter session of the Party＇s Leading-member Group at CAS, which was held from 7 to 11 January in Beijing.

CAS Announces Academicians Elected in 2009

Thirty five Chinese scientists and six of their colleagues from Canada, France and the United States were elected into CAS in 2009. The announcement was made by CAS President LU Yongxiang at a press conference held on December 4, 2009, in Beijing. CAS Vice President LI Jinghai read the list of the new Members.

CAS Center for Space Environment Research and Prediction Established

The opening ceremony for the newly established CAS Center for Space Environment Research and Prediction was held on Nov. 10 at the CAS Center for Space Science and Applied Research. CAS Vice President Jiang Mianheng and Vice Minister of the State Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense,Luan Enjie, officiated at the ceremony.     

Basic Research Objectives Reaffirmed

As a national institution for scientific research and a component of the national innovation system, CAS should and must make key contributions to the great national rejuvenation of the country. Keeping this in mind, CAS has developed four developmental targets for its basic research. This was revealed at a CAS conference on basic research held June 11-12 in Beijing.

The Fourth Presidium of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was elected at the 11th CAS General Assembly held from May 28 to June 1, 2002, in Beijing.     

CAS paleoichthyologist gives Artedi Lecture in Sweden

Prof. ZHANG Miman (CHANG Mee-mann), a CAS Member from the CAS Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, was invited to give a talk at the Artedi Lectures at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, on 5 December, 2008.

Atotal of 51 prominent Chinese scientists were elected CAS members in 2005. The announce ment was made at a press conference held on Dec. 16 in Beijing. CAS President LU Yongxiang was present at the conference to give a briefing on the election and the new members.

CAS Researcher Win International Catalysis Award

Prof. Li Can, a CAS member and director of the State Key Laboratory of Catalysis at the CAS Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, received the International Catalysis Award at the 13th International Catalysis Congress (ICC)held from July 11 to 16 in Paris.     

苏联专家在中国科学院：对1950年代中苏两国科学院交流与合作的历史考察

在举国上下全面学习苏联的氛围中,自1954年起,数百位苏联科学技术专家陆续来到中国科学院,以院长顾问、学科专家等不同身份,指导、规划中国科学院的制度设计和科研组织工作,并开展了大量科研合作与交流项目。论文依据中国科学院档案等原始文献,着重对这一时期苏联专家在中国科学院早期发展中的角色与作用做出历史的叙述。并以此为切入点,对中苏两国科学院在上世纪50年代这一独特阶段中的交流与合作关系作出基本评估,指出在中国科学院的苏联专家,其工作性质和职责范围以及在华地位,是一个逐渐弱化的过程;而这一变化,除受到两国不同阶段意识形态变化、中共高层对苏政策调整的影响之外,还与合作与交流中双方利益的冲突与调适有关。

Under the auspices of CAS,a training program designed to foster entrepreneurs was officially kicked off on 14 July,2008,in Beijing.CAS President LU Yongxiang was present at the launching ceremony.     

CAS enacts rules to guide management of its institutes

CAS issued Regulations for Comprehensive Administration of Research Institutes at the annual work conference opened on 24 March in Beijing. It is regarded as another cardinal document for CAS management after its Constitution, which was decreed in 2006.     

The 10th Session of the Fourth CAS Presidium Held in Beijing

Chaired by Prof. LuYongxiang, executive chairman of the CAS Presidium and president of CAS, the 10th session of the fourth CAS Presidium was held on September 2 in Beijing. The CAS Presidium is the standing leading body of the CAS General Assembly, the highest organ of the CAS Academic Divisions (CASAD).
