在《金瓶梅》的人物画廊里，塑造得最成功的艺术形象就是小说的主人公西门庆。西门庆是中国封建社会传统的价值观、经济观、道德观所孕育的一个畸形儿。他是恶霸无赖，但较之一般的市井泼皮，却要独特得多。他聚财的方式除放“官吏贷”之外，就是靠女人发财。作为一个商人，他的投资对象和方式也极为独特，他选择官场，完成了金钱与权力的结合。官商一体的西门庆是在中国传统的重农抑商观念的影响下，在中国传统的封建经济和封建政治的温床上滋生的。只有这样理解，在读《金瓶梅》时，才算较准确地把握了西门庆这一艺术典型。     

西门庆哪来那么多钱

人们说到西门庆时,往往会送他三顶帽子：商人、官僚、市井恶霸。而在这三种身份中,最根本的还是商人。西门庆临死前留下的财产总值,不算房产,合白银将近十万两,相当于今天的两千万人民币。那西门庆又是从哪里赚来的那么多钱呢？

《金瓶梅》的贡献，在于塑造了一个具有多重社会身份和广泛历史内涵的不朽形象西门庆。从赚钱方式与金钱用向角度来看，西门庆不仅不能称为新兴商人的代表，相反，他的所谓经营对社会发展起到的主要是负面效应。他的人生轨迹始之于贪恋女色，败之于贪恋女色，而以经商贯穿始终。

诚然,《金瓶梅》的西门庆,与《水浒传》的西门庆相比较,“他不再是被意念化了的单一性格的扁平人物,而是一个有多面性格的圆整的血肉之躯。”(石昌渝:《金瓶梅鉴赏辞典》第4页)那么,西门庆到底是个什么形象?如果从社会学的角度去看,他的确如许多专家所论定,是一个融恶霸、官僚、商人于一身的新兴商人形象。然而,如此判定的形象,对晚明的社会情态及文化意识而言,似乎已经省略这一典型其他内涵和美学的意义。因此,笔者认为,把西门庆视为一个概括当时社会情态的特殊平凡人,更切合作品实际些。一、第一印象,西门庆是一个集流氓恶棍、地主豪霸、凶残滥官于一身的不法大奸商     

西门庆东京庆寿诞的时代效应

近年来,《金瓶梅》的研究又出现了热潮,学者普遍认为它是一部具有近代意义的小说,并且在许多方面有所突破,但就其思想价值和主体人物而论,一直存在两种截然对立的观点,特别是关于西门庆采用庆寿诞的方式交通太师,亦官亦商、巧取豪夺的行径一直成为彼此对立争议的关键所在:否定方面认为“西门庆是一个封建势力的代表人物”;肯定方面认为“西门庆是一个新兴商人的代表”。前种说法,是传统观点的继承与发挥,后种意见,虽然触及主体人物的本质,但就上述问题而论,没有从官商渗透的历史必然及其导致的社会深刻变动方面充分论证其“恶”的历史效应,这是《金瓶梅》中不可回避的主要课题,也是作品的主要价值所在,值得探索。
