Dimensions of educational transactions in a videoconferencing learning environment

Abstract

Moore's Theory of Transactional Distance suggests that dialogue, structure, and learner autonomy are the key elements delineating the educational transaction in distance learning environments. However, the conceptualizations of these concepts in a telecommunication era have not been systematically addressed. By investigating 121 learners’ experiences with videoconferencing, this study identified the dimensions (factors) constituting dialogue, structure, and learner autonomy in such a learning environment. Exploratory factor analysis using a principal axis factor method was carried out. It was concluded that each of these three concepts represented multi‐faceted ideas. Dialogue consisted of three dimensions: in‐class discussion, out‐of‐class electronic communication, and out‐of‐class face‐to‐face interaction. Structure contained the dimensions of course organization and course delivery. Learner autonomy was comprised of independence and interdependence. The results of this study can inform videoconferencing researchers and practitioners of the factors of the educational transaction that should be considered in videoconferencing courses.     

基于课程标准的教师和学习者自主性研究

学习者自主性涵盖技术、心理、社会文化和批判政治学等层面。英语课程标准明确提出要发展学生的自主学习意识和能力,这实际上也对教师自主性提出了要求,因为学生自主在很大程度上取决于教师自主。课程标准下的教师和学生自主性研究要致力于探讨教师对课程标准的理解、意见和态度以及课程标准的颁布、实施和新教材的使用对教师和学生自主性所造成的影响。教师和学生自主性研究可以使用定性和定量研究方法,但定性方法,例如关于教师教学实况和学生学习实况的纵向、多例个案研究,似乎更加合适。     

高二学生自主学习与英语学习成绩的调查研究

从中学生英语自主学习情况问卷调查入手,利用SPSS13.0对高二学生英语自主学习与学习成绩的相关性进行了研究。结果表明:高二学生英语自主学习与学习成绩之间有着极为密切的关系。外语教师在教学中应当更有效地对学生进行学习自主性训练,从而帮助学生逐步实现从学习依赖到学习自主这一过渡。     

Disability,Dependency and Indebtedness?

What does dependency reveal about human learning? All humans are dependent, largely because we are variously vulnerable and disabled at more than one stage in our lives. In this paper the subject of dependency is approached largely in the context of our vulnerable and disabled states, including in particular, states of profound disability. The primary contention is that our dependent states should feature in accounts of how we learn, and of relations between learner and teacher, in ways that compare with the attention given to personal autonomy and independence.     

The Enhancement Effect of Learner Autonomy on Motivation in SLL

For many years now," autonomy" in learning has been a topic of widespread discussion in educational field.Accordingly,it is Henry Holec who introduced learner autonomy to the field of second language in his project report to the Council of Europe in 1981.Motivation is also a widely used psychological term in our daily life and research.Both learner autonomy and motivation are important factors in influencing learning effects.Many researchers conduct studies on learner autonomy and motivation.There are also some studies on the correlation between learner autonomy and motivation in SLL(Second Language Learning).However,few of them focus on the effect of learner autonomy on motivation.Thus,it makes an attempt to investigate whether learner autonomy has an enhancement effect on motivation.It combines motivation and learner autonomy together to find some effective and efficient ways of promoting foreign or second language learning.In another way,it enriches learner autonomy research.It holds that learner autonomy is a very important factor in influencing motivation.It will make a combination between learner autonomy and motivation in SLL to find some new ways of promoting learners’ motivation and learning efficiency.A survey methodology has been employed which consists of qualitative and quantitative methods.Specifically,both questionnaire and interview have been conducted in the research.     

自主性外语学习的影响因素

长期以来我国的教学模式使学生依赖性较强，自觉性较差，而发展学生的自觉性应从转变学生的自主学习态度入手。文章认为自主学习受诸多因素影响，必须多方努力，发挥各方面的优势，实现内外因素结合的最优化．以培养和提高学习者自主学习的意识和能力。
