How ethnic studies faculty use streaming video: Instructional needs,applications, and challenges

While there have been studies on faculty use of streaming video resources in academic libraries, none have focused on the specific needs of ethnic studies faculty. Using a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 13 ethnic studies faculty from two public university campuses, this study found that faculty engagement with video is based upon a pedagogical strategy that responds to the specific demands and goals of ethnic studies curricula, while centering on student needs by using free resources whenever possible. Within this paradigm, faculty choose from three categories of content: key primary and secondary sources; flexible supporting sources; and current topics of interest. Understanding what motivates ethnic study faculty could be helpful as librarians work with vendors and advocate for the content that best meets instructional needs. Librarians can also help improve faculty's instructional outcomes by communicating about licensing options and streaming media availability through the library.     

A long article about short videos: A content analysis of U.S. academic libraries' use of TikTok

TikTok, a social media platform that focuses on short form videos, has gained a high level of popularity, particularly among young adults. Because libraries are always looking for ways to engage with their patrons, the popularity among this demographic provides an opportunity for college and university libraries to do so. This study analyzed and categorized the videos within 15 academic library TikTok accounts in order to answer two questions: 1) How do academic libraries use TikTok? and 2) Is there a correlation between content category and user interaction on academic library TikTok accounts? The results show that humanizing or fun videos were most utilized by academic libraries, followed by videos including or highlighting collections and spaces. Results also demonstrated that humanizing and fun videos received the highest amount of user engagement. This differs from previous studies on other types of social media wherein news and announcements or events were often the dominant categories.     

Measuring Libraries’ Use of YouTube as a Promotional Tool: An Exploratory Study and Proposed Best Practices

With the emergence of social networking and Web 2.0 applications, libraries have the means to reach users through interactive Web-based tools patrons already use in their personal lives, such as Facebook and YouTube. In this study the authors aim to understand the ways that libraries are using YouTube for outreach purposes. Using a methodology adapted from studies in medical literature, the authors identified and analyzed library promotional videos on YouTube, both in relation to other works depicting libraries and librarians and as a unique category of content. In order to analyze the viewership of library promotional videos and its growth over time, view counts were compared at three points in time over a period of sixteen months. Using data made available by YouTube, the authors analyzed the top five referring Web sites to each video, thus allowing a basic understanding of the viewership of library promotional videos and their abilities to reach intended audiences. The authors also analyzed the many interactive features supported by YouTube to gain insight into the ways viewers were responding to and interacting with videos, including comments and the ability to mark videos as favorites. Finally, three examples of promotional videos created by libraries were selected as case studies. The creators of each video were interviewed about the creation processes and their insights into the effectiveness of their videos. A key finding was that while library professionals comprise a significant portion of viewers for library promotional videos, creators can increase viewership by the intended audience if they frequently and strategically feature online video content in Web sites, local or campus communication vehicles, and social media environments. The quantitative and qualitative measures developed for this study are offered as possible metrics for the assessment and evaluation of online library video content, and for libraries’ use of social media forms. Based on these measures, and following the review of hundreds of videos with library-based content, the authors have derived a set of evidence-based best practices for the use of online video as a promotional tool by libraries.     

WorldCat Local and Information Literacy Instruction: An Exploration of Emerging Teaching Practice

Since the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) unveiled its WorldCat Local library catalog discovery layer in 2008, library instructors have debated how to incorporate this tool into their teaching. WorldCat Local's faceted searching brings both educational benefits and unexpected challenges to the classroom. Instructors frequently hold formal and informal discussions on such topics as which search features are most effective during teaching and which patron groups benefit most from this tool. The authors of this article surveyed instruction librarians at U.S. academic libraries that are using WorldCat Local in order to gather and organize this feedback. This article presents the findings of this survey.     

What Qualifications and Skills are Important for Digital Librarian Positions in Academic Libraries? A Job Advertisement Analysis

As academic library functions and activities continue to evolve, libraries have broadened the traditional library model, which focuses on management of physical resources and activities, to include a digital library model, transforming resources and services into digital formats to support teaching, learning, and research. This transition has affected professionals' roles and activities due to new required skills. This study examines qualifications and skills required of professional positions involved in digital resources, services, and technologies as changing aspects in academic libraries. Data was collected from job advertisements for digital library positions posted in College and Research Libraries News during the nine years from 1999 to 2007. The study verifies shifts in staffing needs and required qualifications with digital focus on collections, services, and technology applications in academic libraries. The results confirm that a digital librarian is an emerging position in academic libraries. LIS educational implications and further investigations to validate the results are suggested.     

Managing streaming video: A new role for technical services

BMCC Library is using streaming video technology to extend the electronic reserves service to include audio and videos. We have found that a streaming video project can be managed by non-technical staff with results that empower staff and impress students and faculty with their ease of use. The role of technical services in the library has evolved considerably, a process driven in part by technology. Consistent with this trend, our technical services department was asked to manage an electronic reserves program a few years back. Adding streaming video to its portfolio will invigorate a vital service department in the library. This article will illustrate the process we undertook from start to finish, demonstrating the major concern of streaming media is copyright consideration, not technology.     

Faculty Awareness and Perception of Streaming Video for Teaching

Streaming is an increasingly popular delivery method for audiovisual content in higher education and has been embraced by many libraries, sometimes without sufficient communication with faculty. The authors developed a survey with the primary purpose of determining whether faculty on their campus were aware of the library's streaming video services and what barriers might be preventing wider use. The study sought to gather contextual information on faculty preferences, interests, and awareness regarding library media collections, audiovisual delivery formats, and the use of streaming video for instruction. This information will inform actions and decisions about collections and outreach.     

iTunes University and ARL Academic Libraries

iTunes University is a free service offered by Apple iTunes to educational institutions. It serves as a platform for the management and distribution of educational, instructional, and informational resources through both audio and video podcasts. Participation in the service among colleges and universities continues to grow since its official launch in 2007 as an official offshoot of the iTunes store. While several universities in the United States and Canada have established a presence on iTunes University, the involvement of the ARL members varies. This study surveys the presence of ARL academic libraries on iTunes University and the visibility of the library on the school's iTunes University page and examines the types of resources offered by participating libraries. It also highlights model participants as examples for other institutions and considers what implications future involvement in the service may hold for academic libraries.     

Exploring the Evidence in Evidence-Based Acquisition

ABSTRACT

This article explores the University of Colorado (CU) Libraries’ experiences with evaluating a patron-driven (PDA) program with Kanopy and an evidence-based (EBA) program with Alexander Street for streaming videos. The article includes a thorough comparison of EBA and PDA models, workflows, and outcomes. Three separately administered libraries within the CU system support campuses of different budgets, student and faculty demographics, programs, and exposure to streaming collections. Lessons in implementing and assessing streaming videos at each library and across the consortia are shared along with details on how to implement similar analysis at other libraries.

If we built it,would they come? Creating instruction videos with promotion in mind

This article reports on a video project done in an academic library where faculty were included in the production and marketing of the library instruction videos. The videos allowed the librarian to provide a shorter presentation and spend most of her time working individually with each student. The results showed that 97% of the students watched the videos and were able to benefit from the content. The implementation of the videos was a success due to the collaboration of the professors teaching the three courses and the buy-in of the course coordinator; both factors were essential in the success of the video project.     

Access to Circulating Videos in Academic Libraries: From Policy Review to Action Plan

Streaming video is becoming the preferred means of viewing video for consumers, but physical formats do continue to offer libraries certain advantages: greater variety of choice for patrons at a lower cost. Many academic libraries have invested heavily in DVD collections, and these videos may be housed in closed stacks that satisfy some stakeholders but that discourage use and do not meet student needs or expectations. This article provides a framework for deciding whether to open up a closed collection and uses the author's library's closed-stack collection as a case study.

Electronic Reserves: A Centralized Approach to the Scanning Process

ABSTRACT

Electronic reserves are being offered at colleges and Universities across the country creating an opportunity for collaboration between the library units of academic libraries. Library units with course reserves in medium and large academic libraries can capitalize on the benefits working with a centralized scanning unit, thus consolidating the scanning process of electronic reserves processing. The cooperation between library units to provide better service results in a positive relationship between course instructors, students, and the library.     

Demand for E-books in an Academic Library

ABSTRACT

Rather than create a collection solely to support distance learners, libraries should consider the needs of all customers when developing a digital library. The acceptance of digital libraries is dependant upon the conversion of resources to an electronic format that is easy to use and is fully searchable. While electronic journals are widely accepted by most academic library customers, the delivery of online books has had a very different acceptance rate. Rather than support the sequential reading of books, electronic books are commonly used to find information and can be particularly well-suited for reference purposes. This article will provide insight into the history of e-book models and evaluate the usage statistics of a large electronic book collection in an academic library.     

Latino students and the academic library: A primer for action

As the growth in Latino college enrollment is expected to continue for years to come, academic libraries at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and beyond will be serving increasing numbers of Hispanic students. Since Latino educational attainment remains lower than of other groups and academic libraries' impact on retention, GPA and related educational outcomes has been well documented, it is crucial that academic libraries actively foster Latino students' success. A review of the literature on Hispanic students and library use, the article also includes recommendations for practice and offers a local example to illustrate strategies libraries may implement to better meet the educational needs of Hispanic students.

Crossing the boundaries through OER adoption: Considering open educational resources (OER) as boundary objects in higher education

Advocates who argue for the use of open educational resources (OER) promote the cost benefits in comparison to traditional course materials, reducing the expense of higher education for students. If institutions and their libraries are going to invest resources to assist their faculty in OER adoption, then we must understand how OER utilization could affect college instructors. OER are fundamentally different than traditional resources, in licensing and composition, therefore instructors will likely have to go beyond their usual boundaries of practice to implement OER. This small, qualitative study examines the impact of OER adoption on college instructors by investigating if OER can act as a boundary object, by analyzing if boundary crossing phenomena is present in implementation processes of instructors. By knowing this, institutions of higher education and their libraries could better allocate their resources to support faculty OER adoption.
