This philosophical excursion into the foundations of educational technology begins by considering the nature of knowing and learning from the media, as well as stating the assumptions of the paper. The foundations of educational technology — the systems approach, systems theory, and behaviorism - are explicated. Then, I state and discuss four philosophical propositions for considering the mediation of experience and educational technology: a) Learning is a constructive activity so technologies should liberate, not constrain learners; b) media produce an event ontology separate from personal experience; c) mediation is a phenomenological process; and d) media provide existential access to the world’s knowledge and to internal aspects of the self. I am especially indebted to Professor Robert Heinich (Indiana University) for his repeated and insightful analysis of this paper. Significant contributions were also made by the late Professor James Macdonald, to whom the paper is dedicated, and Professor Arnold Levin (University of North Carolina at Greensboro). This paper analyses how historical narratives of the 1930s conflict between child‐centred and social reconstructionist factions of US progressive education reinforce gendered constructions of education. The split between these two groups has been drawn along lines of gender with child‐centred education associated with female educators focused on individual development and social reconstructionists comprised of university male faculty working for social justice. The work of Elsie Ripley Clapp, an active proponent of rural progressive education in the 1920s and 1930s, is used to illustrate the limitations of accepted categorisations of progressive education. The focus on Clapp points to new ways of framing the ideological tensions within the progressive education movement and highlights how the politics of gender influence which educators are remembered as leaders and activists. The paper argues that the recent renewal of interest in social reconstructionism should include a critique of its oppositional and hierarchical relation to female progressive educators.  相似文献

ON THE COVER: Gross anatomy lecture c. 1888 delivered by Joseph Leidy, M.D., LL.D., (1823‐1891), Professor of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Leidy, a founder and first president (1899‐1889) of the American Association of Anatomists, received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1844 and in 1886 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Learning and Laws degree by Harvard University. According to the University of Pennsylvania catalogue for the 1886/1887 academic year, the course in anatomy for medical students consisted of 3 lectures and 10 hours of practical anatomy classes with an additional 2 lectures per week of topographical anatomy.  相似文献
