Mela: festival scenes in South Asian cinema

This article examines a recurrent film motif across a number of South Asian films, mostly called Mela. It also offers some observations on melas, actual and allegorical, as represented in films but often seeming to exceed their containment in context so as to say more about the conviviality of life, where this is at issue, where life is at a juncture in need of resolution within the cycle of becoming. The issues of violence, loss, national identity, politics of interpretation and repetition in ideology are canvassed. While the essay is focused upon Mela films themselves, and South Asian film more broadly, it has of course been important to note work by scholars such as M. Madhava Prasad, Ashish Rajadhyaksha, Anjali Gera Roy, Tejaswini Niranjana, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and the help of my students, some of whom are named below.     

Years since migration and wellbeing among Indian and Sri Lankan skilled migrants in Australia: Mediating effects of acculturation

The present study investigated language, identity and behavioral acculturation experiences and personal wellbeing among 306 Sri Lankan and Indian skilled migrant employees using a cross-sectional survey. The results indicated that participants were more acculturated to their heritage culture compared to the host culture. The majority of Sri Lankan and Indian skilled migrants were moderately acculturated into Australian society, and were most acculturated in the language dimension, followed by the behavior and identity dimensions respectively. Years since migration predicted overall host acculturation but not overall heritage acculturation. While overall heritage acculturation predicted personal wellbeing, overall host acculturation was a stronger predictor. Testing of a mediation model demonstrated that overall host acculturation fully mediated the relationship between years since migration and wellbeing. Further analysis showed that only host identity and language acculturation, and not host behavior acculturation, mediated the relationship between years since migration and wellbeing. Implications of these findings are discussed.

西部大开发是我国政府在2000年提出的重大战略决策，生态环境建设是这一决策的重大问题之一。学术期刊应该采取积极措施，为实现这一战略发挥科技支撑作用。介绍《林业科学》在过去几年中发挥这种作用的一些探索性工作。     

20世纪陇西、青东黄土高原地区的城镇发展

20世纪是陇西、青东黄土高原地区城镇建设最为重要的时期。民国时期这一地区城镇达到300余个,较清代翻了一番,一批商业城市的著名城镇出现,城镇建设完成了由传统向近代化的过渡。新中国成立后,经过前30年的扩充和发展,城镇达到700多个。近20年来,伴随城市化进程,一个以省会兰州为全省中心,以省辖市为区域中心,以县城与乡镇为网络的城镇发展新体系已经形成。     

第二十二届男篮亚锦赛中韩实力分析

采用文献资料法、数理统计法、比较分析法等方法，对中国和韩国男篮在二十二届男篮亚锦赛中技术统计指标进行比较研究，分析中国男篮的现状。指出我国男篮整体实力不平衡、后卫相对软弱、拼抢意识和作风不强是制约我国男篮水平的主要因素。     

亚洲国家集体球类项目竞技实力的比较研究

运用文献法、数理统计法、比较分析法对亚洲各个国家或地区在第26、27、28届夏季奥运会集体球类项目上的竞技实力进行了比较研究,研究结果:亚洲各个国家或地区可以分成两大集团,第一集团包括中国、韩国、日本,第二集团包括中国台北、巴基斯坦、印度、伊拉克,集团之间的实力差距悬殊;在男子项目上,韩国、日本的实力高于其它国家或地区,女子项目的实力强弱顺序依次是中国、韩国、日本与中国台北;在各个项目上,竞技实力的强弱呈现出完全不同的变化,各个国家或地区都具有相对优势项目,但都不具备集团优势。     

东西方人文传统与图书馆读者工作

在西方人文主义理念下，读者工作应了解每位读者不同的个体需求并通过馆员的优质服务使之得到满足，而在中国人文传统理念下，读者工作则应努力创建馆员之间、馆员与读者之间的互爱互信互尊互谅。图书馆读者工作应将东西方人文传统融会贯通，在更高的层面上体现人文精神。     

East Asian pop culture and the trajectory of Asian consumption

This article focuses on Chua Beng Huat’s work on the East Asian pop culture that became more prominent in East and Southeast Asia from the 1990s, when the circulation of multilingual and multi-format pop culture started to exceed linguistic, ethnic and national boundaries. It argues that Chua’s work indicates that the pop-cultural production and innovation that support the globalisation and regionalisation processes in East Asia need not be national in origin but can hail from different national origins – and this despite the existing political realities of the region and its history of political fractures. Chua Beng Huat cautions, though, that the national popular can also be marshalled to defeat the border-crossing potential of an inter-Asian pop culture. What is the “Asia” imagined or being represented in such cultural production? Chua’s work is also distinctive in that it deals with the political and economic conditions that underpin mainstream pop consumption as a socio-cultural phenomenon, instead of examining consumption as identity politics. The article concludes by noting the significance that Chua as an institutional builder has played in enabling the study of East Asian pop culture in the region.     

The ‘White Man’s Game’? West Indian Cricket Tours of the 1900s

The 1900s saw two tours of the United Kingdom (UK) by a mixed race cricket team representing the West Indies. This paper argues that the tours were part of a concerted cultural campaign largely organized by the West India Committee to raise the profile of the British West Indian colonies in the Mother Country in the light of competition for favour among the settler colonies. It analyzes the selection of the team and its reception in the UK to argue that the existing literature has been mistaken in portraying the team to have been subject to consistent hostility due to the inclusion of black players in the touring party. Rather it is argued that the team of 1900 was largely welcomed as a truly representative West Indian team but that by 1906 a tightening of the definition of who could represent the empire on the sports field, influenced by the settlement of the South Africa War, meant that mixed race cricket would be rejected and the West Indians unjustly excluded from the Imperial Cricket Conference, which became an all whites club.
