The Concept of Elegant Literature Before the May 4^th Movement

The ＂PreoMay-4th-Movement＂ scholars such as Wang Guowei and Liu Shipei stressed the literary aesthetic form and set up the theory of elegant literature, which in fact highlighted the aesthetic characteristics and artistic features of literature as the language art with a touchingly beautiful form. This theory had the theoretical significance in promoting the pure literature theory. It was the intermediate between the traditional and the modern literary concepts, and promoted the development of modern study of literature.
