Shen News and Fiction Spreading in Late Qing Dynasty

Shen News was the newspaper that existed for the longest time in Old China. This newspaper flew its own colors and developed its own style in the process of spreading stories and novels in late Qing Dynasty. It printed notices soliciting fiction, carried theoretical articles, and published a large number of stories and novels as well as advertisements. It opened up special fiction columns devoted to publication of stories and novels either written or translated by Chinese scholars. It distributed and presented to the subscribers stories and novels with lithographic illustrations attached to newspapers. It founded literary magazines which carried fiction. Moreover, it published many stories and novels of different types in collaboration with other publishing houses. For all these reasons, Shen News deserves profound study in terms of its great role it played in spreading fiction in late Qing Dynasty.
