"骁勇"与"翘勇"辨析

“骁勇”与“翘勇”是一对关系密切的词。“翘勇”《汉语大词典》未收,而“骁勇”则释为“犹勇猛”,欠精确。由于两者词形和读音都相近,易使人认为它们是同一个词,但事实并非如此。考察佛典与中土文献用例发现,“骁勇”本就体格勇力而言,当释为“健勇”;“翘勇”主要出现于佛典,就内心意志而言,当释为“坚勇”。此外,中土文献中“翘勇”意义与佛典有别,是“骁勇”的通假;佛典中“骁勇”有时也就心志而言,是“翘勇”的通假。

On the Differences Between Xiaoyong and Qiaoyong

Xiaoyong and Qiaoyong are two closely related words,but Qiaoyong is not collected in the Grand Chinese Dictionary while Xiaoyong is interpreted as bravery,but this interpretation is not accurate.Because of the similarities in both spelling and pronunciation,people easily think these two words are of the same meaning.In fact,however,it is not the truth.It is found in the Buddish Canons and local Chinese literatures that Xiaoyong is connected to physique and bravery and should be explained as being agile and brave.Qiaoyong can mainly be found in Buddish Canons.In terms of psychology and spirit,it will be explained as being firm and courageous.Furthermore,in local Chinese literatures,the explanation of Qiaoyong is different from that in the Buddish Canons in which it is explained as a substitute of Xiaoyong.Sometimes,Xiaoyong is related to spirit and used to substitute Qiaoyong.
