Euroamerican Life in the Eyes of Early Modern Chinese: The Case of To the World Series

This essay takes its cue from publication of the To the World Series and closely examines the diaries and travel accounts of Chinese diplomatic envoys as they give expression to the concerns of early modern Chinese for Euroamerican life.It aims to uncover from the perspectives of cultural psyche and social psychology the reasons behind these diplomats’ deep concern for Euroamerican life experience as voraciously registered in these accounts.It argues that this concern stems from their deeper and primary concern for humanity and the common people;they widely registered these vicissitudes in an effort to construct or reconstruct their own culture,and further to enrich the Chinese cultural compass.
