Influence of Olympic Medal Index on National Pride

Elite sport is often regarded as one of the main vehicles for articulating national pride and stimulating national cohesion. In this article, the author explores the effects on national pride as related to success in elite sport especially Olympic medal index, in order to let our people look upon the Olympic medal index rationally and provide a reference for the rational invest of our country＇ s athletic sports funds. The results suggest that the notion of national pride is a rather stable characteristic of countries, and the sport success may lead to minor and temporary fluctuations. It is often implicit to the political rhetoric used to increase sport funding with the aim of winning more medals to generate an increase in national pride.
