Abstract:In order to probe into effects of swimming with different workload on the prevention of osteoporosis in aged men, the male mice of 12 months old (the senile male mice) were used as the subjects of the study and were randomly divided into 5 groups - the 30min. group, the 60min. group, the 60min. with weight group (weight of 2.5% of the body weight), the experimental control group and the sedentary control group. The exercise group had their swimming training for 8 weeks. Effects of aging and swimming with different workload on the mineral content of the lumbar bone and the thighbone as well as the serum hormone level - testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) were observed. The results indicated that swimming with proper workload remarkably increased the bone mineral content and the serum hormone level of the aged male mice as well as delayed the decrease of bone loss with aging and the sex hormone level. Furthermore, swimming with larger workload (within the proper workload) was beneficial to the improvement of the bone mineral content and the sex hormone level of the aged male mice, which shows that swimming is a good method for body-building, suitable for old men. Proper workload of swimming plays a role of preventing the old men from bone loss and osteoporosis. In addition, it is important for the old men to choose swimming with greater workload suitable for themselves so long as they can endure.
