Damage from the Western News Media to GUO Song-tao's Reputation

GUO Songtao(1818-1891),a highly-ranked official in the Qing Dynasty,was sent on a diplomatic mission to the United Kingdom in 1876.In his two-year diplomatic career there,he was blamed for his Diary of West Europe.Later,an issue on his reputation emerged due to a report in Shanghai Daily.The two incidents showed the difference of communication environment between China and the West,and the subtle influence of the Western news media on Chinese official opinion.In GUO Song-tao's diary,the introduction to The Times and other Western newspapers was regarded as valuable historical data in journalism,which ushered in a new upsurge in running newspapers around the Reform Movement of 1898.
