Over the long process of history, education has always been considered as the reflection of civilization in any society. The first Chinese educational monograph On Learning states that "building a country, teaching for the first".In recent years,Chinese leaders even put forward the idea of "developing the country through science and education".It is clear that education is important for a country’s development. It plays a more strategically vital role in a world superpower like the United States.Chinese and American education,to some extent, represent eastern and western education.Under which, there are many different talents coming out.In 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, his unprecedented achievement of eight gold medals makes Michael Phelps one of them.As an American legend, his education is a typical case, but also an epitome of American education.Based on Michael Phelps’s story and education, the thesis concentrates on differences between Chinese and American education. From his childhood education, performance before competitions, and his night life, the thesis analyses characteristics of American education, compares differences in Chinese and American primary and family education, educational essence and curriculums, and probes the causes and effects of those differences. In the end,the thesis puts forward some constructive advice for the reform of Chinese education under current condition in China.  相似文献

The publication of the famous novel The Sound and The Fury projects the long-enduring reputation of William Faulkner as a household American writer in every nook and cranny of the world.Just in this novel,Faulkner employs the literary device of stream of consciousness and makes a good play with time and order to his own joy, which makes it an outstanding literary feature in the novel. In this essay, the unusual conceptions of time and order in the novel are tentatively probed mainly from the following three perspectives:1) the initiative for Faulkner creating the novel as a novel against time and order.2) the disordered arrangement as an artistic device——the optimum key to delivering the story.3) the potential order underlying the seeming disorder in the novel.  相似文献

In Pangs of Love by David Wong Louie, the identity of Chinese immigrants in America is as fluid and unstable as the perfume Musk 838. The Chinese-born mom harbors deep love for China. Though living in America for forty years, she is still persisting in the Chinese tradition while her American-born sons, on the contrary, are trying to integrate into American life, seemingly ignoring the Chinese origin. By looking at the ideological difference under the Chinese and American historical context, this paper aims to reveal that translating the past, old, what’s Chinese into something meaningful to the present, the new and the reality makes it possible that the first-generation integrates into American culture and the second-generation understands Chinese tradition. It illuminates the ways for possible transformation and demonstrates the possibility to establish a Chinese-American identity to transcend the pangs for embracing each other.  相似文献

Barry Levinson’s film Wag the Dog(1997) is concerned with the technological transformation of American culture in the postmodernism which is isomorphic with the media culture of American society in the late twentieth century. By exploring three dualities illustrated in the film, this paper aims to show the insecure and uncertain categories of these oppositions under the dominant phenomena of this period: the media,so as to bring about the public’s ability to discern the postmodern world as well as a new ways of thinking and living.  相似文献

Economic globalization has brought China into closer contact with the rest of the world. Chinese food, as an important part of Chinese culture, attracts foreigners who come to China. But in a lot of cases, when they look at the menus, they feel stunned and baffled. For the English translations of Chinese menus are often incomprehensible and misleading. However, such awareness has not led to an in-depth study on menu translation. In this paper, the author draws on theories of foreignization and domestication, and recommends foreignization as a main strategy and domestication as a supplementary choice. In conjunction with it, the author suggests a set of techniques for menu translation. It is hoped that this will contribute to the preservation and development of Chinese cuisine culture as a whole.  相似文献

This paper describes the differences between the Chinese and American higher education system, and different issues behind these differences along with history and contemporary complexities, and analyzes the reason of its emergence, then how to solve these issues. I studied at Iowa Wesleyan College in America for two and a half years. In order to further understand American higher education system, I interviewed a librarian of Iowa Wesleyan College named Sherril Gibbs. And I have used a lot of data of the department of education USA government from Wikipedia and other sources in my paper. Then this paper finds that Chinese and American higher education system has their own strengths and weaknesses. Both the systems have a need to learn from each other to execute a better education system and to ensure development of all students as per their interest and abilities.  相似文献

This paper examines how the definition and interpretation of the concept gewu zhizhi 格物致知 (investigating things and extending knowledge), evolved along with Chinese intellectual efforts to construct the framework for Chinese learning which, in turn, had a profound impact on the development of educational curricula in different historical periods. In Confucian philosophy, “practicality” appears ambivalent, as it can refer to moral cultivation in daily life or knowledge in the material world. Such ambivalence, embodied in the evolution of the concept of gewu zhizhi, can be interpreted as a Chinese search for a well-rounded curriculum in education. Within this framework, this paper traces the origin of the concept in The Great Learning, and investigates how it was developed to refer specifically to natural studies and then to scientific knowledge introduced into China in the late Qing period. This historical reflection on Chinese education points to the shared humanistic values in the Confucian approach to education and in the Renaissance ideal of a liberal education. It calls for a search for a common humanity in rethinking the content and aim of a modern Chinese education.  相似文献

With the marked globalization of cultural transmission and wide opening of the Chinese market, Chinese movie & TV industry faces unprecedented opportunities and challenges as well. What we face is not only the enormous impact of the economic form of film industry; what is more, in the field of culture, we will also face the enormous impact of"cultural imperialism". This paper focuses on the"cultural imperialism"existed in global especially American films. To counter the cultural empirical globalization of American films growing in great intensity, this paper discusses the theory of"culture rebounds"presented earliest in France. Moreover, under the influence of the theory especially in Chinese film circles, it makes research and analysis to deal with the present situation.  相似文献

Recognizing the benefits of writing centers in improving students'English writing in western countries, some research?ers have begun to investigate the possibility of the writing center approach applied to Chinese higher education. In the study, I con?structed an interview study with American and Chinese writing instructors and tutors to find the features of writing centers in west?ern culture and to compare the different writing values in Chinese and American cultures. The interviews reveal that the philosophy of writing centers in western culture is to"walk students through writing process"and help students to"transfer knowledge in long term use". The investigation of the writing instruction in the Chinese university shows that students are encouraged to express themselves and to conduct more group work, which is highly valued in western culture. Based on the literature and data analysis, the author argues that it's feasible to implement a writing center in China.  相似文献

David Wong Louie, a Chinese American writer whose first collection of short stories Pangs of Love is highly valued. After the publication, critics are interested in the conflicts faced by the second generation Chinese Americans. By analyzing three kinds of conflicts in namesake story"Pangs of Love"in it, it is argued in this paper that the hope of the second generation of Chinese Americans to be assimilated into the mainstream of the White world is but a dream in myth. Focusing on reasons of these conflicts, this paper illuminates the way that Chinese Americans need to transform and establish their own cultural identity.  相似文献

In an attempt to understand different cultures in the use of idioms which related to animals, this study collected, compared, and analyzed Chinese and English idioms on"马"and"horse"by references to a large number of dictionaries. The results show that in Chinese, the idioms on horse has the following features:above all,it covers evenly in commendatory, neutral, and derogatory senses;more specifically,it has a direct link to war in the commendatory sense while in neutral and derogatory senses, its references have been broadened;another common phenomenon is that horses in Chinese idioms are usually a large collection. However,English idioms in the use of horse favors on the derogatory sense since they focus more on the nature of horse-stubborn,arrogant,and even condescending. If horses are praised, they mostly refer to the talented people rather than any other things. The similarities and differences in the use of"马"and"horse"help to probe into the color of culture between eastern and western countries.  相似文献

Pangs of Love tells the experiences of Chinese American immigrants, and especially the pangs the narrator, as a second generation, feels in family, love and social affairs. Based on the analysis of the narrator’s pangs, this paper argues that it is mainly the uncertainty of cultural identity that leads to the pangs of the narrator, and of the second generation Chinese Americans. This paper shows that the second generation can take advantage of their dual but conflicting cultural heritages to develop a renewed and specific cultural identity.  相似文献

The abundant resources of proverbs illustrate their meaningful ideas both in Chinese proverbs and English proverbs, reflecting ordinary lives and regarded as the essence of culture in both countries. So American culture inherited many marvelous traditions from English proverbs and American proverbs must be influenced by English proverbs too. My paper will compare Chinese and American culture through proverbs, aiming at observing the differences of the culture value conception between Chinese and Americans, and hope that this study also can be regarded as a data to give referential meaning to the further research on cross-culture and language comparison.  相似文献
