On the speaking of John L. Lewis

One of the most important criteria in rhetorical judgment is generally recognized to relate to effect, both immediate and long range. Another important criterion concerns the orator's use of rhetorical devices, and their results. When the same rhetorical devices often produce favorable results with one set of audiences, and prove not to be so favorably received when used with other audiences, the critic does well to examine a) the personal background of the orator he is studying and b) the history of the movement or system of ideas the orator represents. It is proposed in this paper first to illustrate the kind of ethical appeal or attack so often used by John L. Lewis, then to trace the historical and personal background which helped produce this approach, and finally to examine its results in a typical speech dealing primarily with labor, and in typical speeches of political as well as labor orientation.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the dimensions of profane language use in a college student sample. Two hundred and eighty‐three responses to a questionnaire on personal use of “sexual vernacular” were submitted to factor analysis. Results of the factor analysis yielded five dimensions of profane language based upon predispositions to use such words.

Housed since 1979 in a landmark I.M. Pei building, the Kennedy Library is noted for the large number of researchers it serves, its new museum, and its educational programs which encourage thoughtful citizen participation in the democratic process. The Library preserves and makes available important collections related to the life of John Kennedy and mid-20th-century American politics and government; it contains 32 million pages of documents, 180,000 photographs, 7 million feet of film, and over 15,000 museum objects, and also includes the papers of Ernest Hemingway. The Library is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. A public-private partnership with the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation provides private funds to support many programs.     

Archiving the feminist self: reflections on the personal papers of Merle Thornton

Over the last couple of decades, the modern Australian women’s movement has been the subject of history, which includes the creation of feminist archives in various locations This essay analyses one particular collection – the personal papers of the feminist activist, Merle Thornton – as an account of the making and meaning of a feminist archive. I wish to explore the ways in which the feminist subject impacts on the archive. Accordingly, I analyse the archival process, as well as the contents of Thornton’s personal papers. What emerge are the difficulties of negotiating the public–private divide for this feminist activist.     

John A. Stormer and the Hofstadter hypothesis

Does political rhetoric hold the key to an understanding of political pathology? Blending historical scholarship and behavioral research, this study tested empirically hypotheses derived from Richard Hofstadter's model of the “paranoid style” in American politics. The data were drawn from John A. Stormer's None Dare Call It Treason.
