Sex differences in the environments of graduate students and faculty

This paper considers some important psychological aspects of the academic experience for male and female graduate faculty members and students. Drawing on data collected in a recent national study of doctoral program quality, information pertaining to the graduate department's environment for learning, the extent of faculty members' concern for students, graduate student assistantship experiences, and faculty members' satisfactions and views about various departmental practices and policies are examined. Gender differences in both student and faculty member perceptions of their environments were found to be generally slight and to vary by discipline.

师生关系是影响研究生培养质量的重要方面,随着我国研究生招生规模的不断扩大,研究生培养中的一些问题逐渐显现出来.本文仅从研究生导师与学生的关系方面对相关问题进行分析和探讨,并提出一些改进师生关系的建议.     

传统文化与内隐观念下的师生关系研究

师生关系是一个多学科都在研究的问题,在多学科研究的基础上,通过复合分类维度将师生关系分为三种典型类型,从而透析每种典型师生关系背后的内隐文化观念,包括传统文化和具体的知识观与儿童观等。在当代知识观转型、儿童观更新的参照下,对典型师生关系进行了反思性探索研究,以提升重建师生关系的自觉性。     

加强研究生入党积极分子培养探析

研究生入党积极分子的培养是提高研究生党员发展质量的关键环节。当前,在研究生入党积极分子的培养中,"重选拔、轻考核"的现象仍然存在,导师未能充分发挥在思想政治教育中第一责任人的作用,党校培养等活动平台缺乏一定实效性,党员引领机制有待完善。在研究生入党积极分子的培养中,必须从当前研究生的特点出发,不断创新培养理念与健全考核标准,进一步丰富培养方式,优化管理模式,从而实现党员培养质量的提升。     

Successful and less-successful research performance of junior faculty

In academic medical centers, there is increasing concern about the diminishing supply of clinical investigators and the amount of clinical investigation being conducted. This study developed and evaluated an instrument designed to measure characteristics of a successful researcher. All assistant professor faculty in the tenure track at this research university were sent a two-page survey. Analyses revealed that 50 percent of the items significantly discriminated successful and less-successful researchers. A factor analysis of these items produced four stable factors: research activities, mentoring, local networks, and scholarly habits. A backward stepwise discriminant analysis revealed that only two of the four factors were needed to effectively identify successful researchers. These two factors were research activities and scholarly habits. The rate of correct classification of the two-factor equation was such that 92 percent of the successful researchers were correctly identified. Testing this instrument in other academic settings would help to determine its generalizability.     

The role of gratitude in enhancing the relationship between doctoral research students and their supervisors

While increasing attention is being placed on the crucial importance of a positive supervisor–student relationship, few studies have investigated how to enhance this. Our paper investigates the effect of gratitude practices, proposing it brings both focus and intentionality to the student–supervisor relationship resulting in better research outcomes and, by implication, a positive impact on attrition rates. Recent research has demonstrated that increased attention to gratitude can enhance relational well-being, but only a few studies investigate the role of gratitude in the higher education context. This qualitative case study explores the impact of gratitude as an intervention, following eight Ph.D. students and their two supervisors, in the schools of physical sciences, and medicine over a six-week period of focused attention on practices of gratitude. Findings revealed that all participants noted a positive impact in the areas of communication, social and emotional well-being, as well as on the research process itself.

Indigenous graduate research students in Australia: a critical review of the research

Over the last decade, there has been a steady increase in the number of Indigenous graduate research students in Australia, yet research and pedagogy has not kept pace with changes underway in the sector. From an extensive search of literature published between 2000 and 2017, 15 papers (representing 10 research projects conducted by seven teams or authors) were identified that addressed Indigenous graduate research student experience. Overall, the literature tends to focus on identifying barriers to completion, noting in particular the impact of financial difficulties, social isolation and racism. A research degree is a key site for the assertion and legitimation of Indigenous knowledges, and it is here that Indigenous students are navigating tensions between legitimated disciplinary practices of the centre and the peripheral status of Indigenous knowledges. We, therefore, adopt Herbert's ‘centre–periphery’ model to interpret the research, arguing that this framework explains the focus on barriers, the neglect of pedagogy centred on academic excellence and student strengths, and research relationships between students and Indigenous communities. Our review identifies the need for a systematic research agenda specifically focused on Indigenous student success at the graduate research level, and looking internationally in order to assess the performance and strategies of Australian higher education providers in comparison to international institutions meeting the aims of First Nations research communities. This approach, we suggest, should move beyond an analysis of the nature of enablers and barriers to focus on Indigenous Higher Degree by Research success.     

Distance education: relationship between academic performance and technology-adept adult students

Advances in technology assisted education are revolutionizing the educational process as most know it today. What impact, if any, does technology-assisted education have on the future of higher education? In this study, we examine data from an ongoing evaluation of the distance education program for graduate level business students in a private university. The study addresses the impact of technology-assisted learning on academic performance among distance learners and their on-campus counterparts. The study further explores the relationship between academic performance and students' technological adeptability. The findings indicate, when adjusted for gender (females out-performed males), there were no significant differences in academic performance between distance learners and their on-campus counterparts. Analysis also shows no significant differences in overall academic performance between technology-adept students and those without technological skills. These findings may remove at least some perceived barriers in the decision to initiate distance education programs.

毕业研究生的职业发展质量、个人职业发展与所受研究生教育的关系是研究生教育理论与实践的重要课题,也是最近几年中外学术界和国际组织日益关注的热点问题之一。对该领域中外30年的研究发展进行总结,是推进该领域研究的基础工作之一,也是本文的主旨。在简述国内外相关研究的基础上,归纳了该类研究的要素选取、主要研究方法现状,最后,对该领域研究的发展趋势提出了初步看法。

Quality of graduate department origin for faculty and its relationship to the asking of undergraudate course examination questions requiring analysis or synthesis of course content was this study's focus. Findings indicated a tendency for faculty holding advanced degrees from higher quality graduate departments to ask more synthesis questions than their counterparts trained at lower quality departments. Implication for faculty selection are drawn from this study's findings.

The ambivalence of ownership: nursing graduate students as collaborators in action research

Collaboration is increasingly advocated within the research community. However, there has been limited exploration of the role of graduate students as collaborators. This article describes the ambivalence of ownership that developed during our encounter with collaboration as participants in action research. As a result of the authors' experiences, they began to challenge the traditional notion of collaboration that is pervasive in nursing research, and to explore the possibilities and limitations collaboration offered for graduate students. The authors argue that the participation and collaboration that are inherent in action research provide unique learning opportunities for graduate students and enable their expertise to be more fully realised     

Mentoring graduate students through the action research journey using guiding principles

Our department has adopted action research (AR) projects as the culminating task for our master’s degree candidates. This article presents our work on mentoring graduate students towards the completion of their final AR research projects and details the deliberate structures put in place to guide them through the AR process. These structures include a full-semester course, individual meetings with an AR chair, and collaborative faculty–student feedback sessions. These collaborative conversations (between students and faculty) have allowed us to clarify our understandings of AR, set standards and goals for AR, and raise our expectations on the quality of final AR projects. We hope that the discussion in this article will give students assigned AR new insights as they conduct their research. Also, we hope that the guiding principles we have derived through our efforts can inform others who currently use or plan to assign AR to their students.
