Writing for publication: ensuring you find the right audience for your paper

Often overlooked by prospective authors, one of the keys to successful writing projects is to find the right audience for your writing. Early in the writing process you should identify where you wish to publish. Publications have preferred styles of presentation and, crucially, defined remits so once you've identified the place of publication, it should determine how to write and structure your piece. Selecting the right place for your writing can also save you from wasting valuable time in submitting and then having your writing rejected because it didn't meet a publication's requirements. Continuing the dialogue between writing experts and academic librarians: A conceptual model of information-based academic writing in higher education

Previous scholarship has established a connection between information literacy and writing, highlighting in particular how writing theories could inform our understanding of information literacy. This paper continues this line of inquiry and discusses how information literacy and writing can mutually inform and support each other. Based on a review of major theoretical developments in both fields, this paper proposes a three-dimensional model of information-based academic writing (IBAW) in higher education that foregrounds information literacy as an integral part of the writing process. Specifically, the model illustrates how writing tasks situated in specific rhetorical, disciplinary, and information contexts activate one's knowledge base and generate information needs, which then guides the iterative information literacy and writing processes, as regulated by one's affective and metacognitive strategies, to generate new knowledge. The IBAW model, with the three dimensions and specific factors explicitly identified, also reflects truthfully the defining features of information literacy as contextual, process-oriented, value-laden, interactive, strategic, and always goal-oriented. As such, it also serves as a contextualized, process-oriented, and task-based model for information literacy instruction and development. Implications for how information literacy and information-based academic writing could be taught based on this proposed model are then discussed.     

信息素养教育与新生写作课整合式教学研究——以南方科技大学“写作与交流”课为例北大核心CSSCI

"写作信息素养"是近年来信息科学和高等教育领域高度关注的一个新概念。写作与信息素养密切相关,把信息素养教育融入写作教学中,打破学科壁垒,使二者相辅相成,是拓展大学图书馆服务与发展"新文科"的必要途径之一。南方科技大学自2018年开设新生"写作与交流"课以来,尝试把信息素养教育整合到写作课中去,取得了良好的教学效果。在写作课中嵌入信息素养教育对于低年级大学生的学术训练尤其重要,为跨学科教学提供新的思路和方法。     

Reexamining the benefits of librarians' professional writing

While academic librarians are dedicated to continuing education in the form of information consumption, they rarely view writing for publication as a way to improve job performance. This article introduces the basic tenets of the Writing to Learn movement and applies them to librarians' writing for publication to provide an argument as to why more librarians should contribute to the scholarly literature. If the primary benefit of publication becomes what librarians and their institutions gain through the writing process, more librarians and their supervisors should be able to justify the time and effort spent on writing.     

高校阅读与写作中心网络平台的设计与实现——以西南交通大学阅读与写作中心为例

[目的/意义]以图书馆作为支点,将阅读推广和写作辅导相结合,将会更有效地促进高校学生的阅读、写作能力;建立以信息技术为支撑的阅读与写作相关的网络平台,将为其教学和管理工作提供重要的辅助。[方法/过程]以西南交通大学阅读与写作中心为例,着眼于阅读与写作中心的网络平台建设,通过对10所国内外相关机构网站的模块设置与特色内容进行比较分析,并根据阅读与写作中心的职能、定位、运作方式与工作内容等要素,设计阅读与写作中心网络平台。[结果/结论]平台使用情况表明,以平台为中心的教学和管理为其提供了有效的支撑和辅助,也为高校阅读推广与写作能力培养的工作开展提供了技术保障,亦可为相关职能机构的平台建设提供借鉴与参考。     

Writing Centers and Libraries: One-Stop Shopping for Better Term Papers

In the university environment, libraries and writing centers often operate as separate entities, but they provide similar services to students. The placement of the writing center inside the library may provide opportunities for partnership. At Florida Gulf Coast University, the Humanities Librarian and the Writing Center Director decided to take advantage of their close proximity and observe each other's service desks. The authors identify five challenges common to librarians and writing consultants as well as cooperative solutions. Furthermore, an exploration of how other libraries and writing centers around the country are working together inspired additional avenues for collaboration.     

Step by Step through the Scholarly Conversation: A Collaborative Library/Writing Faculty Project to Embed Information Literacy and Promote Critical Thinking in First Year Composition at Oregon State University

ABSTRACT

At Oregon State University, writing instructors and librarians collaboratively teach research writing and information literacy in first year composition courses. A four-week unit focuses on the connections between critical thinking, writing and learning, and information literacy. This article describes the process of developing, implementing, and refining this collaborative curriculum. By using assignments and texts that model a recursive critical research and writing process for students, librarians and writing instructors help students think more deeply and critically about their topics.
