International comparative studies in teaching and teacher education

This review of eight papers published in Teaching and Teacher Education over the past twenty years shows how the profession has been impacted by the forces of globalisation. The impact varies in different contexts, according to local factors. The review looks at papers that use explicit international comparisons as a means to bring local contextual characteristics into sharp relief, and discusses the values and pitfalls of this approach. The review concludes by suggesting a possible future agenda for international comparisons, one that seeks answers to the domestic challenges of the Millennium Development Goals and Education for All by looking for solutions overseas. However, international appropriation needs to remain highly sensitive to the cultural context of implementation.     

Teacher education, preservice teacher beliefs, and the moral work of teaching

This paper presents a case for attending to preservice teachers’ beliefs that are relevant to the moral work of teaching within teacher education research and practice, and examines what it would look like to do so. The case for attending to candidate beliefs is grounded in a learner-centered approach to teacher education and in the literature on the role of beliefs in teacher learning and change. The authors demonstrate how attending to preservice teacher beliefs is particularly critical for the task of preparing candidates for the moral work of teaching, and present a conceptual framework that can guide that task and teacher education research and practice designed to support it.

探究体育教学中的德育教育

当前随着素质教育的大力开展,德育教育已经成为学校教育的重点。因而,作为素质教育中重要的内容的学校体育教育同样需要在体育教学的过程中渗透德育教育,从而能够培养学生良好的思想品德。笔者试图分析德育教育在体育教学中的作用,得出如何积极有效的在体育教学过程中运用德育教育,促进体育教育在素质教育中的健康发展。

Competency disparity between pre-service teacher education and in-service teaching requirements in Taiwan

The purpose of this study is to explore whether pre-service teacher education in Taiwan equips in-service teachers with the necessary knowledge and competency to meet the demands of the professional career. A questionnaire was developed to investigate such competency disparity. The questionnaire containing 44 items within six categories was distributed to 305 samples in Taiwan. With a return rate of 92.5%, 282 valid samples were returned and analyzed.     

论如何在大学体育教学中实施思想品德教育

大学生是国家建设的栋梁，是中国特色社会主义物质文明和精神文明建设的中坚力量，应该掌握渊博的科学文化知识，同时具备较高的道德水平，以适应新世纪我国社会主义市场经济发展的需要.根据社会发展的要求和新世纪人才培养的需要，针对大学生思想品德的现状，本文对高校体育教学中如何结合本学科的特点，有针对性、有目的性地做好大学生思想品德教育工作，提出了一些看法及建议.

Views on using portfolio in teacher education

The usage of portfolio methods to document professional development in teaching is increasing in Germany, but despite its proliferation, the issue of how the effects of portfolio methods can be determined has received little attention. This paper investigates the acceptance of portfolio by the pre-service teachers (N = 144, 112 female) and the effects of portfolio on their professional attitudes and competences. In addition, N = 15 teacher educators were interviewed on their assessment of the portfolio method. Results suggest that the efficiency of the portfolio method depends both on personal competences and on the framing within the training program.     

Understanding teacher learning in secondary education: The relations of teacher activities to changed beliefs about teaching and learning

In this study, relations between learning activities of teachers and changes in their beliefs were examined. Thirty-four teachers in Dutch secondary education were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their beliefs about teaching and learning on two occasions. They were also asked to report on learning activities that they undertook. Teachers who had changed their beliefs in a direction congruent with the aims of recent educational reforms often reported experimentation with colleagues' teaching methods. Teachers who changed their beliefs in a direction that was not congruent with the reform often reported experimentation with alternative methods due to discontent with the effectiveness of current methods.
