Applying Gilbert's Teleonomics to Engineer Worthy Performance in Generation Y Employees

A performance management concern exists in the U.S. workforce regarding generational value differences that lead to conflict between four generations of workers: traditionalists, baby boomers, generation X, and generation Y. Generation Y is of particular importance to performance technologists as they are the youngest and currently largest generation, comprising approximately 80 million people. A model based on Gilbert's teleonomic principles provides performance technologists with a template for examining the performance of generation Y employees.     

Toward Worthy Performance: A Case Study on Western Union's Training Program

Western Union has been a leader in the telegraph and money transfer industry for more than a century. However, in 2006, when the last telegram was sent, the company needed to overhaul its focus and retrain its global workforce. This case study analyzes Western Union's employee training and development program circa 2012 and uses Kirkpatrick's four levels of evaluation model to assess the program's overall training effectiveness.     

Appraiser Training: Teacher Performance Evaluation Training for School Administrators

In this article, two in-service English teachers and two preservice English teachers, who participated in a shared mentoring relationship during the studentteaching semester, share their experiences, conflicts, and how they were resolved. The authors provide first-person narratives of all four teachers and suggestions for improving mentoring experiences for both mentor teachers and student teachers. Important issues addressed include territoriality of classroom spaces, students, decision making, and time. The authors provide suggestions for improving communication, use of shared spaces, and planning.

Development of an Evaluation Tool for Online Food Safety Training Programs

Abstract: The objective of this study was to provide the person in charge and food safety instructors an assessment tool to help characterize, identify strengths and weaknesses, determine the completeness of the knowledge gained by the employee, and evaluate the level of content presentation and usability of current retail food safety training platforms. An existing evaluation tool was modified to assess online food safety training programs that contained 5 areas of emphasis: content and instruction, learners, job transfer, design and packaging, and operation. Participation included watching 3 food safety training modules and afterwards evaluate what degree the module content met objectives. More than 85% of the participants responded positively to the scale‐based items of the course evaluation. Items addressing the content and instruction received positive responses. The assessment tool helped panelists to objectively evaluate an online food safety training program that provided numeric data for a valid comparison.

An Exploration of the Use of Multimedia Cases as a Reflective Tool in Teacher Education

Multimedia cases are perceived to be a means of bridging the gap between theory and practice in teacher education. However, little is known about how prospective teachers actually learn with these cases. In this paper, we examine how multimedia cases can stimulate reflective thought among preservice teachers. Gestalt psychology is employed as a theoretical lens to examine how seven preservice teachers work with a multimedia case. Data were collected by means of audiotaped work-aloud protocols, interviews and questionnaires. Results indicate that preservice teachers remain at low levels of abstraction of their ideas about teaching as a result of case examination. Directed assignments and collaboration among prospective teachers were a useful, but not always necessary, means of stimulating discussion on the multimedia case. The study leads to the conclusion there is still much to be learned about how prospective teachers interact with multimedia case, particularly about how such cases might stimulate reflective practice.     

教学反思训练在社区教学师资培养中的效果评价

目的:探讨教学反思训练在社区教学师资培养中的效果。方法:对参与社区教学实践的12名教师进行为期3个月的教学反思训练干预,以专家、学生、教师对教师胜任力进行打分,比较教师前后胜任力的差异。结果:与干预前相比,干预后1个月和干预后3个月教师胜任力有显著性差异(P<0.05)。结论:教学反思训练可促使教师正视教师行为,并自觉提高自身教学能力,提高社区教学质量,值得推广。

Validation of the Early Childhood Ecology Scale-Revised: A Reflective Tool for Teacher Candidates

Given increasing numbers of young culturally and/or linguistically diverse (CLD) children across the United States, it is crucial to prepare early childhood teachers to create high-quality environments that facilitate the development of all children. The Early Childhood Ecology Scale-Revised (ECES-R) has been developed as a reflective tool to help early childhood teacher candidates examine their beliefs concerning classroom ecology. Using cultural responsivity and classroom management theories as the theoretical framework, the authors posit that the ECES-R identifies five dimensions that promote a high-quality, culturally responsive classroom ecology. These include the sociocognitive, sociocultural, sociolinguistic, socioemotional, and sociophysical dimensions. Evidence for reliability and validity was established. Factor analysis supported the five proposed dimensions, with the identification of an additional dimension: sociocomfort.

反思性实践:师范生公费培养的现实关照

近些年来,教师教育中的反思性实践一直受到诸多学者的关注。基于此角度,针对师范生公费培养中存在的师范生报考动机功利化取向明显、入校学习动机不坚定、从教意愿不强烈等问题进行分析。为规避这些问题,首先提出公费师范生培养过程中教育理念、课程理念、教学理念的转型。其次,基于社会发展和理念转型,提出公费师范生培养的新诉求,即培养反思性实践家。最后,提出将公费师范生培养为反思性实践家的策略。     

教师引领BBS论坛讨论活动的角色行为评价模型

本文在梳理BBS论坛讨论活动相关研究基础上,确立了教师引领BBS论坛讨论活动的角色行为,分为设置讨论主题、澄清讨论问题、提供问题解决策略、监控讨论进程和建构讨论氛围等五个维度,并针对上述五个维度编写了绩效行为评价问卷。经因素分析,问卷具有良好的区分度、信度和结构效度。     

Digital Discernment: An E‐Commerce Web Site Evaluation Tool

Students entering the business workforce today may well share some responsibility for developing, revising, or evaluating their company's Web site. They may lack the experience, however, to critique their employer's Web presence effectively. The purpose of developing Digital Discernment, an e‐commerce Web site evaluation tool, was to prepare students for this work. The tool provides them with a listing of criteria with which to assess e‐commerce sites, lets them evaluate pre‐selected sites qualitatively and quantitatively, and allows them to compare their evaluations with their peers. In this article, we discuss and examine the effectiveness of this tool and consider the ways in which it can help students in their future business careers.

MultiMap: An Interactive Tool for Mathematical Experimentation

Abstract

This article describes a computer program, “Multi‐Map,” designed to introduce experimentation and exploration in the precollege mathematics curriculum. The central activity in MultiMap involves the creation of planar maps which may be applied interactively to graphical objects. The maps may be affine or nonlinear; and (among other activities) they can easily be edited, composed, or applied iteratively. We outline MultiMap's interface and basic functionality, describe a wide variety of exploratory mathematical activities that can be undertaken with the program, and present some observations on the use of MultiMap in the classroom.

Developing Interdepartmental Integration: An Evaluation of Three Strategic Approaches for Performance Improvement

Interdepartmental integration, the melding together of disparate functional areas within an organization, is believed to be associated with superior firm performance. However, the particular approach that human resource development practitioners should focus on to improve performance is not well‐understood. Our research assesses three alternative approaches to interdepartmental integration: the interaction, collaboration, and combination views. The interaction view suggests that successful interdepartmental integration is achieved primarily by increasing the volume of meetings and documented information exchange; the collaboration view prescribes teamwork, sharing, and the achievement of collective goals. The third view suggests that Successful integration involves a combination of interaction and collaboration. The results of a recent survey of functional managers are presented. The findings indicate that interaction and collaboration are both positively associated with performance and extendi previous empirical work by suggesting that, when viewed collectively, collaboration mediates the relationship between interaction and performance. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.
