Hardy’s novels are dominated with an atmosphere of fatalism,as may be found in his Jude the Obscure. This paper aims to analyze the character of the hero and the heroine,Jude and Sue,by revealing the contradiction and inconsistency concealed in their desires and deeds. As rebellious as they are,Jude and Sue never escape the confines of conventionalities while confronted with conservative forces. It is not only because of overwhelming power of conservatism but also a tragedy out of their seemingly rebellious compromise.  相似文献

Tess of the D’Urbervilles(1891),the masterpiece of Thomas Hardy, tells the tragical life story of a beautiful country girl.Although the heroine,Tess, was intelligent, beautiful, industrious and kind-hearted,she was finally hanged as the only victim of the story. The root of her tragedy was caused by the bourgeoisie society.Firstly her tragedy comes from the society:the inequali ty of the law,the false of the religion and the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie society.Secondly,Tess’s tragedy is produced by her own characters. In addition, the tragedy of Tess is inevitable. Thus,Tess’s tragedy was produced by both the society and her own character, which is closely related to the bourgeoisie society.  相似文献

Thomas Hardy is an outstanding novelist in the nineteenth century. He has produced numerous works including novels and poetry. His tragic novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles has a great impact on the world literature. The paper is focused on the exploration of Tess’s tragedy through her life experiences.Tess’s tragedy can be illustrated by three factors—her family aspects, love experiences and her social images, which also contribute collectively to poor Tess’s destiny. The social background of the period provides a basis for the novel, and the deformed social values and morality is the root of her tragedy, together with her personal temperament and the Christian religious influences.Christian mores of self-sacrifice,wide love and purity have a great effect on characters in the novel. In the fourth part, there is some enlightenment from Tess’s tragedy. It is believed that women play a crucial role in society.Tess is a woman with good qualities and her experiences give a warning to women today:the proper treatment of one’s behaviors and the social rules is critical.  相似文献

In the novel Tess of the D’urbervilles,Tess is successfully depicted. She is portrayed as a brave girl,hard-working,beautiful and innocent.Alec represents a brutal and destructive force, which triggers Tess’s tragedy.Angle’s inveterate old-fashioned prejudices made him relentlessly abandon Tess.Yet what Hardy tries to show is that the disintegration of rural economy in England brought about by the intrusion of capitalist relations as well as the hypocritical morality of the time are the obvious causes of Tess’s tragedy.Meanwhile,Hardy also attacks the injustice of the law.In the novel,he believes a woman is helpless in the hands of fate and Tess is trapped in the web of fate. Her tragedy is fated and inevitable.  相似文献

Thomas Hardy, one of the representatives of English critical realism in the 19th century, describes a tragic story about Tess,a beautiful and kind girl.Tess’ s tragic life is caused by Alec,Angel and even herself. But all these are connected with the social environment of that day.Tess’ s tragedy is a tragedy of the whole society in fact.An analysis of the causes of Tess’ s tragic life will provide some enlightenment in accurately understanding the socialist society.  相似文献

The work an American Tragedy is a great work of tragedy. The two main characters,Clide and Robert are typical tragic characters. The author will analyze the work from the perspective of Aristotle’s study of tragedy(悲剧论) and Hegel’s typical character(典型人物性格说).The heroine Robert more or less accords with the typical tragic character that Aristotle and Hegel describe in their studies.Although there are some contradictions with their opinions about tragic character and typical character,in my opinion,an American Tragedy is a great work of tragedy and both the hero and heroine are typical tragic characters.  相似文献

As the only tragedy written by Oscar Wilde,Salome enjoys a unique status among all the works of Wilde. It is the representative work of aestheticism and has faced as many controversies as its author since the day it came out.Through the careful analysis of the conflict revealed both inside the play and outside the play, and based on Aristotle’s tragedy theory to interpret the causes of these conflicts,it can be concluded that the design of the conflict in Salome is in accordance with the tragedy theory.Furthermore, interpreting Salome from the perspective of Aristotle’s theory has attached this play with more intricate meaning and different understanding.  相似文献

Social conventions sometimes are regarded as valuable treasure in some culture. But it can also lead to human tragedy. The Arti cle here tried to look into the social and religious conventions behind the human tragedy in Richard Jefferies’ short story "the Acorn Gath erer" and how those conventions and people’s belief affect the relationship between the grandmother and her grandson in the short story. The article discussed the underlying causes to the tragedy from three aspects, the outside pressure, the inner factors and the problem of the society. It attempted to explain how the social pressure influenced the attitude and action of the grandmother, how her inner belief com pelled herself to maltreat the boy and how the social convention and religious belief made the society seemingly pitiless and indifferent. It is also indicated that social and religious conventions still have a lasting effect on how people think and act in today’s world.  相似文献

In Vanity Fair Thackeray clearly demonstrated his view of women through the characterization of the two main female figures. In Thackeray’ s opinion,Becky Sharp was a rebellious figure, the Victorian " adventuress",while Amelia was the traditional submissive Victorian woman," Angel in the House".Via the narrator’ s comments, the author expressed his own view of women. On the one hand,he approved of Becky’ s rebellion,self-consciousness,courage,self-reliance in times of adversity, and on the other hand disapproved of Amelia’ s weakness, passiveness. As victims of the patriarchal society, both of the women were accorded with much sympathy.  相似文献

It is universally acknowledged that Macbeth is the most vivid tragedy as a psychoanalysis of the state of humanity’s development of a sense of sexual self.In the play, the inherent cruelty in masculinity is ironically represented best by the corrupted feminine characters, the three witches and Lady Macbeth.Undoubtedly, they finally push Macbeth over the brink into dramatic tragedy, tragedy of his country, his ambition and his own self as well.  相似文献
