A general social appearance that a great 1iterature works unfold is more abundant, specific and real than provisions of politics, history and philosophy give us.Just as Karl Marx says."The briIiiant contemporary school of novelists in England.whose eloquent and graphic portrayals of the-world have revealed more political and social truths than all the professional politicians.publicists, and moralists put together, had described every section of the middle class of ‘most respectable' pensioners and holders of government bonds, who look down on all kinds of business as something vulgar, down to the stall shopkeepers and lawyers' clerks",when he commented on the great critical realists of the 19th century. It is Thomas Hardy who was a great literature rriter in late 19th century, and his novels enjoyed great prestige among the people at that time.In his novel,Tess of the d'Urbervilles,Tess was a tragic character.Deliberating the whole novel, such a conclusion can be drawn:It was necessary to couse Tess's tragedy. She was not only the victim in Victorian time, but also the victim of the contemporary, which including her helpless parents, cruel inducer,Alec.and her nominal husband,Angel Clare.Unlucky Tess's fate urge me to explore the causes for the tragedy.  相似文献

The Merchant of Venice is one of the most contradictory plays of William Shakespeare.Through presenting and studying the tragedy nature of Shylock, this thesis attempts to illustrate the tragic nature of Merchant of Venice. In this paper the author tries to reveal the significance of its tragic nature through thorough analyzing.Shylock’s tragedy is the tragedy of individual struggling, which shows in the aspects of family, money and religion. The profound reason for Shylock’s tragedy is his Jewish identity. Therefore, the author of this paper is enlightened hereby, turning to a lot of books and data, and then analyzes the origins of Jewish prejudice from two aspects, society and history.Christianity has dominated the west, with its doctrine mainly derived from the New Testament.Meanwhile,Judaism derives its doctrine from the Old Testament. Therefore, the pious Christians will be misled by the contents of libeling Jews and the murdering of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. So a kind of instinctive hatred toward Jews is generated. This kind of tendency is rather clear in the play The Merchant of Venice. In this play,Shylock mentions several times that Antonio has insulted him physically and mentally in the Rialto.Almost all the characters in the play humiliate Shylock. But,he just endures all these insults quietly, and then looks for the chance to revenge. In the end, under the delicate trap set by the authority,Shylock loses again. He loses everything he could lose, both materially and mentally.Nothing is more frustrating than that. However, the author of this paper believes that it is worth paying attention to in the present day.In this paper, the author chooses this topic, presents and analyzes the tragedy of Shylock, and reveals the positive significance of the tragic nature of the play for our time.  相似文献

Tess of the D’Urbervilles(1891),the masterpiece of Thomas Hardy, tells the tragical life story of a beautiful country girl.Although the heroine,Tess, was intelligent, beautiful, industrious and kind-hearted,she was finally hanged as the only victim of the story. The root of her tragedy was caused by the bourgeoisie society.Firstly her tragedy comes from the society:the inequali ty of the law,the false of the religion and the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie society.Secondly,Tess’s tragedy is produced by her own characters. In addition, the tragedy of Tess is inevitable. Thus,Tess’s tragedy was produced by both the society and her own character, which is closely related to the bourgeoisie society.  相似文献

No masterpiece by great writers is single-sided.It is always polyhedron and is bound to show new sides if we read it in a different perspective.Traditionally,"the Mayor of Casterbridge",one of the important novels by Thomas Hardy,is an illustration of the inevitable doom of the patriarchal economy in the English countryside in the 19th century England due to the merciless squeeze by industrial expansion. However, considering the widespread accepted theory of Adam Smith’s economic man and moral man,we could find that man are always in conflict between the two.Someone who are very rational and perfectly informed to pursue their own profits and wealth regardless of others’ interests could always successfully gain their wealth with the cost of losing their own happiness, while others who always care about someone else, put themselves in someone else’s places, and regard someone else’s happiness as their concerns could eventually get their real happiness and sweet life with a sympathetic heart.Adam Smith thinks that the egoism(economic man) and the altruism(moral man) are both human’s natural instincts.Only a moderately prudent balance and union between the two could both develop the economy and gain the happiness. In "The Mayor of Casterbridge",Henchard’s tragedy just lies in the abundance of egoism but the shortage of altruism. That’s to say,he possesses too many characteristics of economic man but too little of moral man. Then Henchard inevitably begins his tragic way with no repentance.

Thomas Hardy is an outstanding novelist in the nineteenth century. He has produced numerous works including novels and poetry. His tragic novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles has a great impact on the world literature. The paper is focused on the exploration of Tess’s tragedy through her life experiences.Tess’s tragedy can be illustrated by three factors—her family aspects, love experiences and her social images, which also contribute collectively to poor Tess’s destiny. The social background of the period provides a basis for the novel, and the deformed social values and morality is the root of her tragedy, together with her personal temperament and the Christian religious influences.Christian mores of self-sacrifice,wide love and purity have a great effect on characters in the novel. In the fourth part, there is some enlightenment from Tess’s tragedy. It is believed that women play a crucial role in society.Tess is a woman with good qualities and her experiences give a warning to women today:the proper treatment of one’s behaviors and the social rules is critical.  相似文献

Abstract

This study sets out to explore and model selected aspects of the approaches to, and conceptions of, learning by Indonesian postgraduate students. Meyer's Experiences of Learning Inventory was administered to 105 postgraduate students at the University of Indonesia in 1995. In 1996, Meyer and Boulton‐Lewis's Reflections on Learning Inventory was administered to a separate group of 94 postgraduate students studying at the same University. An initial finding is that, for a Javanese subgroup of responses, some established operationalised constructs collectively associated with a broader ‘meaning orientation’ to learning, in particular a ‘deep approach’, exhibit low values of internal consistency (alphas between 0.18 and 0.51; ‘deep approach'= 0.28). In contrast, non‐Javanese responses exhibit acceptably higher values of internal consistency (alphas between 0.54 and 0.76; ‘deep approach’ = 0.60). Further contrasts between these two subgroups emerge in terms of exploratory factor structures (of conceptions of learning and related effects). It is argued that an understanding of variation in students’ conceptions of learning, and the influence of these conceptions on the experiences of postgraduate students, can assist supervisors and support staff to better assist them during their candidature. Such assistance, while being important for local postgraduate students, takes on an added dimension when students and supervisors are working within a cross‐cultural setting.  相似文献

The visual arts can be an important and rich domain of learning for young children. In PreK education, The Task Force on Children’s Learning and the Arts: Birth to Age Eight (Young children and the arts: Making creative connections, Washington, DC: Arts Education Partnership, 1998) recommends that art experiences for young children include activities designed to introduce children to works of art that are high quality and developmentally appropriate in both content and presentation. This paper documents the teaching strategies utilized by a master art teacher at the Denver Art Museum to engage preschool-age students in art viewing experiences which were part of a museum-based art program. This research provides support for integrating rich, meaningful art viewing experiences as a regular part of young children’s arts experiences while offering early childhood educators teaching strategies for early art viewing experiences.

Abstract

The number of students who enrol in Master’s programmes has significantly increased in recent years; however, their learning motivations have not been adequately investigated, especially those from developing countries. This article reports a two-phased study that investigated Vietnamese students’ learning motivations for attending Master’s programmes. Qualitative content analysis of 10 open-ended questionnaires as well as exploratory factor analysis of 202 survey responses showed that students were inspired by 14 learning motivations related to employment, knowledge and skills, new adventure and some miscellaneous motivations. Independent samples T-tests results indicated significant differences in the learning motivations between student groups with different age ranges, work experience, nature of their work, targeted Master’s programme (local or international) and sources of funding of their studies. The study also found that their learning motivations were closely related to the Confucian educational and cultural values. This article discusses implications for curriculum development and pedagogical practice for effective Master’s programmes.  相似文献

This article presents motivating factors for taking an international social work course for a sample of graduate students in the United States. Literature on international education, including courses and international field placements, provides a framework for the study. Qualitative themes showed that students were motivated primarily as a result of prior international experience, or the desire for such, as well as a wish to understand the phenomena of globalization. Findings point to the need for offering more courses in international social work and globalization.  相似文献

Robert Sternberg’s (2017) Active Concerned Citizenship and Ethical Leadership (ACCEL) framework provides a helpful way to align gifted education with the complexities of 21st-century socioeconomic and cultural environments. The recommendation that we shift away from pseudoquantitative precision in conceptions of giftedness aligns with similar recommendations in other fields including political science, economics, and mathematics. The emphases on ethics and wisdom are reinforced by analyses of the need for more ethical awareness in societies. These analyses arise from research and theory in other fields, including ethical philosophy, political science, economics, history, sociology, and journalism. These transdisciplinary similarities are interpreted to be conceptual triangulation supporting the importance of Sternberg’s model as a catalyst for the development of more holistic conceptions of giftedness and talent.  相似文献

A Rose for Emily is the masterpiece of William Faulkner, who is regarded as the founder of Southern literature. The Fall of the House of Usher is one of the most popular short stories written by the great American writer Edgar Allan Poe. They have common ends that the main characters of the two novels—Emily and Usher are all destruction of their unbalanced personality. This thesis will set a new point from a branch view of psychology—personality psychology to analyze the two characters Emily and Usher, how they change from pathological personality to abnormal personality, and finally destruct from flesh to soul. The deep meaning is to announce the human inner world will distract by the outside world.  相似文献
