M K Chandrashekaran (1937–2009)

Maroli Krishnayya Chandrashekaran, Editor of Journal of Biosciences (from 1991 to 1997) and Resonance (from 2003 to 2005), was a biologist who stood out from his peers as much on account of the quality of his contributions as because of his style. He made major contributions to our understanding of the interplay between time and the living world (which also became the title of a book he wrote). This article aims to bring together aspects of his life and work.

《2009中国大学评价研究报告》评价对象为2008年度教育部批准并公布的具有普通高等学历教育招生资格的公办本科院校、独立学院和民办大学。由于本评价报告对我国高校的综合选优排序,对评价指标数据覆盖不到的高校,课题组暂不做评价。指标数据主要通过教育部门相关网站、高校网站、媒体报道和报刊杂志书籍等渠道获得,评价指标基本上采用的是参评高校2008年度的数据。

<正>西里尔·侯尔(Cyril Orvin Houle),美国著名成人教育家。1913年3月26日出生于美国福罗里达州萨拉索塔,1998年5月6日去世。侯尔1930年在佛罗里达大学获教育学学士学位,1934年在佛罗里达大学获教育学硕士学位,1940年在瑞富士(Fhoyd W.Reeves)     

Environmental education (EE) policy and content of the contemporary (2009–2017) Mexican national curriculum for primary schools

In Mexico a reformed curriculum is being implemented at the national primary level focused on the competence model and incorporating EE as a key element. This article reports our analyses of what theories, policies and/or EE related-contents were included in the documents that integrated this curriculum: general study plan, study programs of Grades and official students’ textbooks. Results indicate that in those official documents was incorporated a competence related to EE called ‘competences for the coexistence’, implying harmonic relationships with others and the nature. Additionally, EE for sustainability was included as a transversal topic expecting that contributes to reach the graduate profile of basic education that indicates that students should promote and assume the care of health and the environment. Nevertheless, it is not clear how it is expected that teachers implement EE in practice, lacking clarity of the environmental theory that support this curriculum.     

From barriers to bridges: An investigation on Saudi student mobility (2006–2009)

Globalisation is often thought to advocate for a single set of beliefs and customs and for a rejection of the need to protect regional cultures and traditions. In the aftermath of 9/11, the rift between Western and Arab cultures has deepened, and there is a patent need for cultural bridges to be built. The government of Saudi Arabia has, by increasing funding for higher education through grants and scholarships, enabled Saudi students to study at overseas universities. A number of non-Saudi students are also enrolled at Saudi Arabian universities. After a brief introduction to the cultural and educational history of the Arab region and Saudi identity, this article turns to contemporary higher education in Saudi Arabia. It introduces the King Abdullah Scholarship Programme and then goes on to present detailed enrolment data for 2006–2009, demonstrating trends and policy changes and identifying patterns in student mobility.
