Selection practices for Web-based government publications in state depository library programs: Comparing active and passive approaches

This paper describes a comparative case study of the capture and selection practices used to populate electronic depositories of born-digital state government publications. The three case sites illustrate differences in collection building approaches, technological infrastructures, and statutory contexts. The findings reveal two basic modes of selection practices—active selection and passive selection, and three selection models based on the loci of selection control—library selection, liaison selection, and creator selection. Also, the findings suggest the power of defining and selecting government publications for state depositories is shifting from government agencies to state libraries in the active selection model. The authors argue for the need to attend to Web publications in non-traditional formats (e.g., an interactive HTML document) and to include common publications produced for lay citizens (e.g., brochures, fact sheets, FAQs, etc.) in the permanent collections in order to fully document government activities for the historical record.

介绍我国医学原创性一次文献连续型电子出版物数量、学科影响力,分析目前连续型电子出版物面临的问题,探讨我国医学原创性一次文献连续型电子出版物的发展方向。一方面,连续型电子出版物需不断提高自身学术质量、编校质量,加强推广与宣传,提升在学科中的影响力和行业中的认可度;另一方面,编辑部需创新人才管理体制,建立稳定、专职的复合型编辑团队;同时,在国家政策的引导下,光盘版连续型电子出版物应加快多媒体融合,推动光盘版向网络版出版的转型。     

Sailing the Digital Seas: Charting a New Course with CONTENTdm

With the transition of government publications from print to digital over the last decade, the State Library of North Carolina saw the need to implement a content management system for the state’s digital publications. The State Library formed a Digital Information Management Program (DIMP) in 2006 to address the challenge of managing their digital collections. The library chose to utilize OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC)’s CONTENTdm software to manage their digital materials and associated metadata. The presentation described below outlined the processes and challenges in managing their collections with this software.

Access to the publications of the international labour office

Abstract

Using a scientometric approach, this study examines scholarly publications by library and information science (LIS) researchers affiliated with Iranian institutions that were published in non-Iranian journals and indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database, together with publications in Iranian LIS journals from 1980 through 2016. The results show that Iranian authors published 538 LIS documents indexed in WoS and another 7,837 in national journals. The research article was the predominant document type at both the national and international levels. The total number of international publications in LIS by all countries was 313,449; Iran ranked 34th among the countries for publications in LIS.
