翻译适应选择论视角下译者的适应与选择——以The Kite Runner两中文译本语言维翻译为例

翻译适应选择论认为翻译的实质是译者适应翻译生态环境的选择活动。本文拟以The Kite Runner的两中文译本为例,从语言维的两个层面对比分析两位译者在各自翻译生态环境中的适应和选择。     

Study of Hassan’s Tragedy from Three Aspects in The Kite Runner

This paper analyzes a novel Kite Runner of Khaled Hosseini, published in 2003. It is the first novel of Hosseini which had been one of the bestselling in New York Times ranking list. It studies Hassan’s tragedy from three aspects, including the social environment in Afghanistan, the loyalty of Hassan, and the selfishness of Amir. Besides, it also discusses the friendship and betrayal between two boys-Hassan and Amir. Finally, the terrible life of Hassan in Afghanistan is under investigated.     

On The Conceptions of Time and Order in Faulkner’s The Sound and The Fury

The publication of the famous novel The Sound and The Fury projects the long-enduring reputation of William Faulkner as a household American writer in every nook and cranny of the world.Just in this novel,Faulkner employs the literary device of stream of consciousness and makes a good play with time and order to his own joy,which makes it an outstanding literary feature in the novel.In this essay,the unusual conceptions of time and order in the novel are tentatively probed mainly from the following three perspectives:1) the initiative for Faulkner creating the novel as a novel against time and order.2) the disordered arrangement as an artistic device——the optimum key to delivering the story.3) the potential order underlying the seeming disorder in the novel.     

The Young Man’s Madness in The Raven

The raven is a narrative poem written by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. It tells of a talking raven’s mysterious visit in a midnight to a distraught lover, tracing the lover’s slow fall into madness. The lover is lamenting the loss of his beloved, Lenore. The raven, sitting on a bust of Pallas, seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word"Nevermore".

The Red Thread by Nicholas Jose mirrors the famous Chinese literary classic,Six Chapters of a Floating Life by Shen Fu and gives a second chance of life for Shen Fu and Yun.Destined to be attached to the Chinese classic,Shen Fuling and Ruth change their destiny as the incarnations in their protection of love and life.The co-existence of two love stories beyond time and space illustrates a quest for beauty,love and the affirmation of life in common.     

The Comparative Analysis of The River-Merchant’s Wife:A Letter

"The River-Merchant’s Wife:A Letter",written by the great poet Li Bai,is the most prestigious version among the translations of Chinese ancient poetry by Ezra Pound and has been accepted as one of the classics of American literature.The poem exquisitely expresses the changes of the wife’s mind at different phases.Martin and Rose’s Appraisal Theory provides us with a theoretical framework for the analysis of the different realizations of the sentimental resources of the poem in the original and its English version.     

A Thematic Interpretation of Khaled Hosseini＇s The Kite Runner from the Perspective of Cognitive Poetics

《追风筝的人》是美籍阿富汗作家卡勒德·胡塞尼的第一部作品,一经面世就受到了文艺批评领域和市场的广泛关注,其热潮让文学界震惊。该作品聚拢了一个庞大的读者群体,即有一定知识教养和赏析能力的人。那么这个群体被吸引的根本原因就在于作品对人性揭示的深刻、主题意蕴的丰富、文化社会背景的真实。基于此,从认知诗学角度入手对《追风筝的人》进行解读,从隐喻的角度出发来探析主人公的心路成长历程,分析人性的背叛和救赎,以期能挖掘出作品的艺术内涵和价值,从而对作品的文学研究和推广起到抛砖引玉的作用。     

A Good Example of Hemingway’s Iceberg Principle:The Killers

Hemingway established a well-known literary theory - iceberg principle.He said he always attempted to create his literary works according to this principle.In his opinion,if a prose writer has a pretty clear idea of what he writes about,then he can omit the things he knows,and the readers will strongly feel that what the writer has omitted seems to have been written as long as what he writes is authentic.Hemingway himself once said,\"The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one eighth of it being above water.\"Here,one eighth refers to the information given by the author,and the rest refers to the unwrit ten information that can be acquired in readers’imagination on the basis of the one eighth.The Killers is a good example of Hemingway’s iceberg principle.This essay will analyse the characters in it to show how the principle was used in this short story.With no doubt the iceberg principle leaves a large space for the readers to imagine and better understand Hemingway’s works.     

Emma’s Growth from Innocence to Maturity

Emma is one of the most successful novels by Jane Austen.This thesis analyzed the background of its heroine Emma’s growth background,her growth from conceit,snobbery,domination to maturity,and the causes of her character transformation.Her psychological growth process from innocence to maturity demonstrates women’s growth and progress in the early 19th cen tury,and inspires modern women to gradually improve in personality and better present their charms of maturity.     

Children’s and Adults’ Views of Punishment as a Path to Redemption

The current work investigated the extent to which children (N=171 6- to 8-year-olds) and adults (N = 94) view punishment as redemptive. In Study 1, children—but not adults—reported that “mean” individuals became “nicer” after one severe form of punishment (incarceration). Moreover, adults expected “nice” individuals’ moral character to worsen following punishment; however, we did not find that children expected such a change. Study 2 extended these findings by showing that children view “mean” individuals as becoming “nicer” following both severe (incarceration) and relatively minor (time-out) punishments, suggesting that the pattern of results from Study 1 generalizes across punishment types. Together, these studies indicate that children—but not adults—may view punishment as a vehicle for redemption.

The Worlds of Fact and Fiction in The French Lieutenant＇ s Woman

Structuralism provides people with an effective solution in their constant quest of meaning.Readers and literary writers as well may make meaning out of a literary text with the concept of binary opposition,such as"fact/fiction".The author analyses the novel and points out that the"fact/fiction"opposition existing in the main characters,and that Mr.Fowles cleverly takes advantage of the opposition and leave the quest of fact to the readers,thus creating a more"factual"world in the story.     

A Psychological Analysis of Laura’s Personality in Katherine Mansfield’s The Garden Party

This paper explores Laura’s inner world, applying Freud’s theory of the unconscious and the structure of the mind,Jung’s idea of archetypes, and Lacan’s concepts of the three orders. The story in The Garden Party depicts, in the movement toward adulthood, how Laura feels, thinks and acts under the drive of the id, and the adjustment of the ego and the superego. Laura’s psychological development indicates Laura has a healthy personality. She can confront her imperfection in her growth.     

A Study of Ethnocentrism and its Dysfunction in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club

In Amy Tan’s famous novel:The Joy Luck Club,ethnocentrism held by different groups including the mainstream so ciety and minorities is to blame for cultural conflicts.In this article,it gives the theoretical framework by discussing the definition,function and consequences of ethnocentrism.The second chapter probes into Amy Tan’story and gives examples of ethnocen trism held by family members within the minority group and by people around them.It concludes that the ethnocentrism is not limited to history or to some specific country or races.High level of ethnocentrism is dysfunctional,leading to misunderstanding and conflicts with out-group members.It is indicated that cultural relativism is the reasonable method people should adopt when they are involved in intercultural communication.     

Assimilation and Modernity——A Case Study of Abraham Cahan’s “The Imported Bridegroom”

In the modern era, the Jewish-Americans were faced with challenges because of the assimilation and modernity environment in the US, and as a result, many of them were in a double bind—to be an assimilated American citizen or to be a traditional Jew. With his work"The Imported Bridegroom", Abraham Cahan contemplated on the subject of Jewish immigration and assimilation and he made a ground-breaking contribution to the establishment of American modernity. This paper intends to analyze Cahan’s attitudes towards assimilation and modernity and how he builds up modernity for all of the Americans. Three characters in"The Imported Bridegroom", who stand for three prototypes of modern Jewish-Americans confronting the overwhelming flood of assimilation and the duty for retaining their traditions, will be analyzed. Through the composition of this work, Cahan tried to spread the Jewish culture on the one hand, and on the other, he warned the peripheral that it was difficult to be assimilated without disasters even if they had made contribution to the formation of modernity.     

Inter-Parental Violence: The Pre-Schooler’s Perspective and the Educator’s Role

Early childhood educators are likely to encounter youngsters who experience problems at home impeding their abilities to learn and benefit from the program. One such group is children who live or have lived with adult domestic violence. Children yet to begin elementary school are over-represented among groups of young people known to live with inter-parental violence. A qualitative study using clinical interviews of young children was used to develop a model suggesting how key aspects of development among children 3–5 years of age can react to and be affected by inter-parental violence. Focus is on age-appropriate expression of emotions, salience of observations and conflicting messages, a child’s focus on outcome versus process, egocentricity and self-blame, learning of gender roles, and delay or regression in development of independence. Implications for the classroom are outlined, including providing a nurturing environment, supporting child adjustment, and helping caregivers. Special contingencies when families are in shelters are also discussed.     

Images in Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is T.S. Eliot’s masterpiece, which marked the beginning of Eliot’s career as an influential poet. Prufrock is the image of an ineffectual, sorrowful and depressed western man in twentieth century. Eliot used a lot of images to reveal the city as a wasteland, the tedious life of the western modern people, and the bewildered and split personality of western people. Eliot succeeds in reflecting inner world and spiritual state of modern people with the long, fragmented images,which influence future writers.     

Naturalistic Analysis on Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage

The Red Badge of Courage is the masterpiece of Stephen Crane. As a naturalist novel, its success is based on strong visual stimulation and the continuous auditory shock, a three-dimensional war movie which is crackling with sounds and colors was rendered so incisively and vividly. This paper aims to probe the naturalism in The Red Badge of Courage from two angles:visual aspects and auditory aspects.     

Eucharist and Human Body in George Herbert’s Poetry

George Herbert is one of the great metaphysical and religious poets in the seventeenth-century history of British literature.Herbert becomes well-known for his devotional religious poems,his famous collection of devotional lyrics,The Temple in which Herbert expresses his piety towards God and manifests that the love of God is an everlasting subject for verse,has won enduring popularity among readers since its publication in 1633.The present paper will focus on Eucharist and human body showing in Herbert’s poetry,and attempts to explore the deeper implications existing behind Eucharist and human body with reference to some specific poems which are chosen from The Temple in detail.
