Peking Opera Alleglan under Heaven is adapted from a story about a Chinese states- man＇s filial piety in the Spring and Autumn Period （770 BC - 476 BC）. The inspiration/or this on-stage performance comes from the Chinese classic Spring and Autumn Annals. It narrates the story that Lord Zheng throws away the past resentment and becomes reconciled to his moth- er, underlining the importance of ties of blood and affection and calling for social conscience and humanity. Its premiere has special and realistic implications, especially in the Chinese soci- ety today in which money worship is gaining the upper hand over traditional morality.

Abstract

This paper examines the history of Beijing in relation to gardens — imperial, princely, public and private — and the impetus of the ‘gardener’, in particular in the twentieth‐century. Engaging with the theme of ‘violence in the garden’ as articulated by such scholars as Zygmunt Bauman and Martin Jay, I reflect on Beijing as a ‘garden of violence’, both before the rise of the socialist state in 1949, and during the years leading up to the 2008 Olympics.

The communications challenge of a post-apartheid South Africa: The intercultural agenda

Based on personal experience in South Africa (1984–1985), this paper broadly outlines and discusses the intercultural dimension of the South African dilemma. The intercultural communication needs are viewed as fundamental for the promotion and sustaining of positive structural changes that will emerge post-Apartheid. By reviewing events in South Africa and summarizing a recent South African study emphasizing the intercultural needs, the paper posits a readiness for addressing the issue and asserts that intercultural communicators do not have the option of “disinvesting” in South Africa. The paper briefly reviews two programs in South Africa addressing the intercultural needs agenda.     

Communicating across cultures in multinational Ibis West Africa

This article examines effective communication in the midst of multi-varied cultures at Ibis West Africa adopting a qualitative approach of the constructivist’s paradigm. Misinterpretations, misperceptions and misunderstandings of both verbal and non-verbal cues as well as differences in creating common meaning of messages encoded and decoded and the mindlessness of the communication environment characterised the interactions between the expatriate workers and the local staff of Ibis West Africa. The article recommended that Ibis West Africa could focus more on intercultural relationship and capacity building among their multicultural staff to enhance effective communication in this multinational organisation.
