This article discusses practical methods of searching for the evidence using PubMed. Four searching techniques are included: Simple Limit, Preview/Index, Clinical Queries, and the MeSH Browser. Search strings based on the University of Rochester's Clinical Filters are provided.

PEDro: a physiotherapy evidence database

PEDro is produced by the Centre for Evidence-Based Physiotherapy (CEBP), located in Sydney, Australia. PEDro is intended to be used to gain "rapid access to bibliographic details and abstracts of randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in physiotherapy." This column will provide some background information on the database, as well as cover the basics of searching its content.

Utilizing local evidence for blog feed search

Blog feed search aims to identify a blog feed of recurring interest to users on a given topic. A blog feed, the retrieval unit for blog feed search, comprises blog posts of diverse topics. This topical diversity of blog feeds often causes performance deterioration of blog feed search. To alleviate the problem, this paper proposes several approaches based on passage retrieval, widely regarded as effective to handle topical diversity at document level in ad-hoc retrieval. We define the global and local evidence for blog feed search, which correspond to the document-level and passage-level evidence for passage retrieval, respectively, and investigate their influence on blog feed search, in terms of both initial retrieval and pseudo-relevance feedback. For initial retrieval, we propose a retrieval framework to integrate global evidence with local evidence. For pseudo-relevance feedback, we gather feedback information from the local evidence of the top K ranked blog feeds to capture diverse and accurate information related to a given topic. Experimental results show that our approaches using local evidence consistently and significantly outperform traditional ones.

Testing a model of value argument and evidence

The purpose of this paper is to develop a model of negotiation rule use that incorporates both content and relational dimensions of communication and focuses upon interaction as the dependent variable. Fourteen negotiation rules are hypothesized to structure the negotiation interaction. From these rules fourteen interaction analysis categories are developed—with seven assessing how negotiators respond to one another and seven assessing how negotiators cue or constrain the opponent's next utterance. Interactions in mock negotiations are coded using this category scheme and placed into cue‐response transition matrices. The differences in interaction patterns among winners and losers are used to assess the extent to which the rules structure the negotiation interaction.     

Dogmatism of the speaker and selection of evidence

Previous research on the use of relational maintenance strategies in marriage was replicated and extended by examining diary logs of 103 married couples kept over a two‐week period. Gender differences within the marital dyads were examined. Additionally, the effect of relational satisfaction or comparison level was explored, in terms of an interdependence theory explanation of relational maintenance strategy use. The results showed significant differences between husbands and wives for openness, network, and especially tasks strategies. Wives invariably used more of each type of relational maintenance strategy than their husbands. No effects of relational satisfaction emerged, which suggested that an interdependence theory explanation of relational maintenance strategy use may be inappropriate. An ad hoc assessment of the effect of length of marriage on strategy use was significant and indicated a general decline in the use of all types of strategies as years married increased.     

Increasing the acceptance of functional requirements for electronic evidence

This article reports on a research study that tested the effect of statements of “ literary warrant ” on lawyers, auditors and information specialists’ evaluations of a set of functional requirements for electronic evidence. It found that legal statements can increase the rating of importance of some of the functional requirements. Its results also provided evidence that differences in subjects professional backgrounds and their computer knowledge can affect the ratings of importance the subjects gave to the functional requirements. This study was completed as part of the requirements for the author’s doctoral program. It has benefited immensely from the insightful comments received from members of her doctoral Committee: Richard Cox, Margaret Hedstrom, Edie Rasmussen, and Steven Hirtle. David Bearman first purposed the concept of “ literary warrant ”, and this study has also profited greatly from his wise advice.     

Evidence-based librarianship: searching for the needed EBL evidence

This paper discusses the challenges of finding evidence needed to implement Evidence-Based Librarianship (EBL). Focusing first on database coverage for three health sciences librarianship journals, the article examines the information contents of different databases. Strategies are needed to search for relevant evidence in the library literature via these databases, and the problems associated with searching the grey literature of librarianship. Database coverage, plausible search strategies, and the grey literature of library science all pose challenges to finding the needed research evidence for practicing EBL. Health sciences librarians need to ensure that systems are designed that can track and provide access to needed research evidence to support Evidence-Based Librarianship (EBL).
