吉首大学创办于1958年9月,是办在湘鄂渝黔四省(市)边区的具有地方性、民族性的湖南省属综合性大学,由吉首校区和张家界校区组成,本部在湘西土家族苗族自治州首府——吉首市。2000年、2002年和2006年,原吉首卫生学校、武陵高等专科学校、湘西州人民医院先后并入吉首大学。2006年教育部学校本科教学工作水平评估获得优秀。
