This paper focuses on temporal retrieval of activities in videos via sentence queries. Given a sentence query describing an activity, temporal moment retrieval aims at localizing the temporal segment within the video that best describes the textual query. This is a general yet challenging task as it requires the comprehending of both video and language. Existing research predominantly employ coarse frame-level features as the visual representation, obfuscating the specific details (e.g., the desired objects “girl”, “cup” and action “pour”) within the video which may provide critical cues for localizing the desired moment. In this paper, we propose a novel Spatial and Language-Temporal Tensor Fusion (SLTF) approach to resolve those issues. Specifically, the SLTF method first takes advantage of object-level local features and attends to the most relevant local features (e.g., the local features “girl”, “cup”) by spatial attention. Then we encode the sequence of the local features on consecutive frames by employing LSTM network, which can capture the motion information and interactions among these objects (e.g., the interaction “pour” involving these two objects). Meanwhile, language-temporal attention is utilized to emphasize the keywords based on moment context information. Thereafter, a tensor fusion network learns both the intra-modality and inter-modality dynamics, which can enhance the learning of moment-query representation. Therefore, our proposed two attention sub-networks can adaptively recognize the most relevant objects and interactions in the video, and simultaneously highlight the keywords in the query for retrieving the desired moment. Experimental results on three public benchmark datasets (obtained from TACOS, Charades-STA, and DiDeMo) show that the SLTF model significantly outperforms current state-of-the-art approaches, and demonstrate the benefits produced by new technologies incorporated into SLTF.  相似文献

This paper presents a laboratory based evaluation study of cross-language information retrieval technologies, utilizing partially parallel test collections, NTCIR-2 (used together with NTCIR-1), where Japanese–English parallel document collections, parallel topic sets and their relevance judgments are available. These enable us to observe and compare monolingual retrieval processes in two languages as well as retrieval across languages. Our experiments focused on (1) the Rosetta stone question (whether a partially parallel collection helps in cross-language information access or not?) and (2) two aspects of retrieval difficulties namely “collection discrepancy” and “query discrepancy”. Japanese and English monolingual retrieval systems are combined by dictionary based query translation modules so that a symmetrical bilingual evaluation environment is implemented.  相似文献

This paper examines a real-time measure of bias in Web search engines. The measure captures the degree to which the distribution of URLs, retrieved in response to a query, deviates from an ideal or fair distribution for that query. This ideal is approximated by the distribution produced by a collection of search engines. Differences between bias and classical retrieval measures are highlighted by examining the possibilities for bias in four extreme cases of recall and precision. The results of experiments examining the influence on bias measurement of subject domains, search engines, and search terms are presented. Three general conclusions are drawn: (1) the performance of search engines can be distinguished with the aid of the bias measure; (2) bias values depend on the subject matter under consideration; (3) choice of search terms does not account for much of the variance in bias values. These conclusions underscore the need to develop “bias profiles” for search engines.  相似文献

In this paper the features of a microprocessor based architecture for bibliographic retrieval system are illustrated. The proposed system consists of the following three functional blocks: the “query processor”, the “simple query executers” and the “answer composer”. The query processor parses the queries and breaks the complex query into simple queries. Each simple query executer is able to perform the operations satisfying a simple query. Finally, the answer composer puts together the results of all simple query executers and produces the response to the query originally raised. This machine will allow the implementation of a very powerfull query language. The basic design goals are the system modularity and a whatever complex query's fulfilment. This is achieved through the proposed query language and by means of the system architecture allowing high parallelism in the performed operations.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with techniques for fuzzy query processing in a database system. By a fuzzy query we mean a query which uses imprecise or fuzzy predicates (e.g. AGE = “VERY YOUNG”, SALARY = “MORE OR LESS HIGH”, YEAR-OF-EMPLOYMENT = “RECENT”, SALARY ? 20,000, etc.). As a basis for fuzzy query processing, a fuzzy retrieval system based on the theory of fuzzy sets and linguistic variables is introduced. In our system model, the first step in processing fuzzy queries consists of assigning meaning to fuzzy terms (linguistic values), of a term-set, used for the formulation of a query. The meaning of a fuzzy term is defined as a fuzzy set in a universe of discourse which contains the numerical values of a domain of a relation in the system database. The fuzzy retrieval system developed is a high level model for the techniques which may be used in a database system. The feasibility of implementing such techniques in a real environment is studied. Specifically, within this context, techniques for processing simple fuzzy queries expressed in the relational query language SEQUEL are introduced.  相似文献

Recreational queries from users searching for places to go and things to do or see are very common in web and mobile search. Users specify constraints for what they are looking for, like suitability for kids, romantic ambiance or budget. Queries like “restaurants in New York City” are currently served by static local results or the thumbnail carousel. More complex queries like “things to do in San Francisco with kids” or “romantic places to eat in Seattle” require the user to click on every element of the search engine result page to read articles from Yelp, TripAdvisor, or WikiTravel to satisfy their needs. Location data, which is an essential part of web search, is even more prevalent with location-based social networks and offers new opportunities for many ways of satisfying information seeking scenarios. In this paper, we address the problem of recreational queries in information retrieval and propose a solution that combines search query logs with LBSNs data to match user needs and possible options. At the core of our solution is a framework that combines social, geographical, and temporal information for a relevance model centered around the use of semantic annotations on Points of Interest with the goal of addressing these recreational queries. A central part of the framework is a taxonomy derived from behavioral data that drives the modeling and user experience. We also describe in detail the complexity of assessing and evaluating Point of Interest data, a topic that is usually not covered in related work, and propose task design alternatives that work well.We demonstrate the feasibility and scalability of our methods using a data set of 1B check-ins and a large sample of queries from the real-world. Finally, we describe the integration of our techniques in a commercial search engine.  相似文献

Two probabilistic approaches to cross-lingual retrieval are in wide use today, those based on probabilistic models of relevance, as exemplified by INQUERY, and those based on language modeling. INQUERY, as a query net model, allows the easy incorporation of query operators, including a synonym operator, which has proven to be extremely useful in cross-language information retrieval (CLIR), in an approach often called structured query translation. In contrast, language models incorporate translation probabilities into a unified framework. We compare the two approaches on Arabic and Spanish data sets, using two kinds of bilingual dictionaries––one derived from a conventional dictionary, and one derived from a parallel corpus. We find that structured query processing gives slightly better results when queries are not expanded. On the other hand, when queries are expanded, language modeling gives better results, but only when using a probabilistic dictionary derived from a parallel corpus. We pursue two additional issues inherent in the comparison of structured query processing with language modeling. The first concerns query expansion, and the second is the role of translation probabilities. We compare conventional expansion techniques (pseudo-relevance feedback) with relevance modeling, a new IR approach which fits into the formal framework of language modeling. We find that relevance modeling and pseudo-relevance feedback achieve comparable levels of retrieval and that good translation probabilities confer a small but significant advantage.  相似文献

In the web environment, most of the queries issued by users are implicit by nature. Inferring the different temporal intents of this type of query enhances the overall temporal part of the web search results. Previous works tackling this problem usually focused on news queries, where the retrieval of the most recent results related to the query are usually sufficient to meet the user's information needs. However, few works have studied the importance of time in queries such as “Philip Seymour Hoffman” where the results may require no recency at all. In this work, we focus on this type of queries named “time-sensitive queries” where the results are preferably from a diversified time span, not necessarily the most recent one. Unlike related work, we follow a content-based approach to identify the most important time periods of the query and integrate time into a re-ranking model to boost the retrieval of documents whose contents match the query time period. For that purpose, we define a linear combination of topical and temporal scores, which reflects the relevance of any web document both in the topical and temporal dimensions, thus contributing to improve the effectiveness of the ranked results across different types of queries. Our approach relies on a novel temporal similarity measure that is capable of determining the most important dates for a query, while filtering out the non-relevant ones. Through extensive experimental evaluation over web corpora, we show that our model offers promising results compared to baseline approaches. As a result of our investigation, we publicly provide a set of web services and a web search interface so that the system can be graphically explored by the research community.  相似文献

Query Expansion (QE) is one of the most important mechanisms in the information retrieval field. A typical short Internet query will go through a process of refinement to improve its retrieval power. Most of the existing QE techniques suffer from retrieval performance degradation due to imprecise choice of query’s additive terms in the QE process. In this paper, we introduce a novel automated QE mechanism. The new expansion process is guided by the semantics relations between the original query and the expanding words, in the context of the utilized corpus. Experimental results of our “controlled” query expansion, using the Arabic TREC-10 data, show a significant enhancement of recall and precision over current existing mechanisms in the field.  相似文献

Over the years, various meta-languages have been used to manually enrich documents with conceptual knowledge of some kind. Examples include keyword assignment to citations or, more recently, tags to websites. In this paper we propose generative concept models as an extension to query modeling within the language modeling framework, which leverages these conceptual annotations to improve retrieval. By means of relevance feedback the original query is translated into a conceptual representation, which is subsequently used to update the query model.  相似文献

We propose in this paper an architecture for near-duplicate video detection based on: (i) index and query signature based structures integrating temporal and perceptual visual features and (ii) a matching framework computing the logical inference between index and query documents. As far as indexing is concerned, instead of concatenating low-level visual features in high-dimensional spaces which results in curse of dimensionality and redundancy issues, we adopt a perceptual symbolic representation based on color and texture concepts. For matching, we propose to instantiate a retrieval model based on logical inference through the coupling of an N-gram sliding window process and theoretically-sound lattice-based structures. The techniques we cover are robust and insensitive to general video editing and/or degradation, making it ideal for re-broadcasted video search. Experiments are carried out on large quantities of video data collected from the TRECVID 02, 03 and 04 collections and real-world video broadcasts recorded from two German TV stations. An empirical comparison over two state-of-the-art dynamic programming techniques is encouraging and demonstrates the advantage and feasibility of our method.  相似文献

Good information storage and retrieval systems should not only meet the looseness of human memory but also the looseness of natural language. Our information trace method allows for the creation of mechanical systems that combine looseness with indulgence. In accordance with this method, information records consisting of pieces of natural language are attached to each other, leaving fuzzy semantic traces behind in the form of sets of three-letter-strings which have been derived from the original texts. The system calculates an “importance value” for each possible answer to a user query. Queries also may be given in the form of a simple piece of natural language. Answers are communicated to the user, if he so wishes, in descending order of “importance value” as calculated by the system.  相似文献

Among the problems associated with modern information retrieval systems is the lack of any systematic approach to the design of query language interfaces. In this paper we attempt to show how a relationally organised data base is well suited to bibliographic data management, and how, given such a relational organisation it is possible to construct an interface which separates the query language from the physical representation of the data base. It is also shown how such a query language organisation may be usefully interfaced to existing retrieval systems. Finally a query language for retrieval applications is proposed.  相似文献

The estimation of query model is an important task in language modeling (LM) approaches to information retrieval (IR). The ideal estimation is expected to be not only effective in terms of high mean retrieval performance over all queries, but also stable in terms of low variance of retrieval performance across different queries. In practice, however, improving effectiveness can sacrifice stability, and vice versa. In this paper, we propose to study this tradeoff from a new perspective, i.e., the bias–variance tradeoff, which is a fundamental theory in statistics. We formulate the notion of bias–variance regarding retrieval performance and estimation quality of query models. We then investigate several estimated query models, by analyzing when and why the bias–variance tradeoff will occur, and how the bias and variance can be reduced simultaneously. A series of experiments on four TREC collections have been conducted to systematically evaluate our bias–variance analysis. Our approach and results will potentially form an analysis framework and a novel evaluation strategy for query language modeling.  相似文献

Web queries in question format are becoming a common element of a user's interaction with Web search engines. Web search services such as Ask Jeeves – a publicly accessible question and answer (Q&A) search engine – request users to enter question format queries. This paper provides results from a study examining queries in question format submitted to two different Web search engines – Ask Jeeves that explicitly encourages queries in question format and the Excite search service that does not explicitly encourage queries in question format. We identify the characteristics of queries in question format in two different data sets: (1) 30,000 Ask Jeeves queries and 15,575 Excite queries, including the nature, length, and structure of queries in question format. Findings include: (1) 50% of Ask Jeeves queries and less than 1% of Excite were in question format, (2) most users entered only one query in question format with little query reformulation, (3) limited range of formats for queries in question format – mainly “where”, “what”, or “how” questions, (4) most common question query format was “Where can I find………” for general information on a topic, and (5) non-question queries may be in request format. Overall, four types of user Web queries were identified: keyword, Boolean, question, and request. These findings provide an initial mapping of the structure and content of queries in question and request format. Implications for Web search services are discussed.  相似文献

A comparative evaluation has been carried out on the Philips “DIRECT” and the British “INSPEC” retrieval system. DIRECT is based on automatic indexing whereas INSPEC uses manual subject indexing. Two queries were submitted to both systems, using the same data base. The results are expressed in terms of recall and precision. Both recall and precision of INSPEC were found to be higher than those of DIRECT by 20%. It is concluded that this is mainly a result of the query formulation. The effectiveness obtained with automatic indexing of documents is equivalent to that of the manual procedure.  相似文献

Information need is one of the most fundamental aspects of information seeking, which traditionally conceptualizes as the initiation phase of an individual’s information seeking behavior. However, the very elusive and inexpressible nature of information need makes it hard to elicit from the information seeker or to extract through an automated process. One approach to understanding how a person realizes and expresses information need is to observe their seeking behaviors, to engage processes with information retrieval systems, and to focus on situated performative actions. Using Dervin’s Sense-Making theory and conceptualization of information need based on existing studies, the work reported here tries to understand and explore the concept of information need from a fresh methodological perspective by examining users’ perceived barriers and desired helps in different stages of information search episodes through the analyses of various implicit and explicit user search behaviors. In a controlled lab study, each participant performed three simulated online information search tasks. Participants’ implicit behaviors were collected through search logs, and explicit feedback was elicited through pre-task and post-task questionnaires. A total of 208 query segments were logged, along with users’ annotations on perceived problems and help. Data collected from the study was analyzed by applying both quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings identified several behaviors – such as the number of bookmarks, query length, number of the unique queries, time spent on search results observed in the previous segment, the current segment, and throughout the session – strongly associated with participants’ perceived barriers and help needed. The findings also showed that it is possible to build accurate predictive models to infer perceived problems of articulation of queries, useless and irrelevant information, and unavailability of information from users’ previous segment, current segment, and whole session behaviors. The findings also demonstrated that by combining perceived problem(s) and search behavioral features, it was possible to infer users’ needed help(s) in search with a certain level of accuracy (78%).  相似文献

This paper presents a novel IR-style keyword search model for semantic web data retrieval, distinguished from current retrieval methods. In this model, an answer to a keyword query is a connected subgraph that contains all the query keywords. In addition, the answer is minimal because any proper subgraph can not be an answer to the query. We provide an approximation algorithm to retrieve these answers efficiently. A special ranking strategy is also proposed so that answers can be appropriately ordered. The experimental results over real datasets show that our model outperforms existing possible solutions with respect to effectiveness and efficiency.  相似文献

Both general and domain-specific search engines have adopted query suggestion techniques to help users formulate effective queries. In the specific domain of literature search (e.g., finding academic papers), the initial queries are usually based on a draft paper or abstract, rather than short lists of keywords. In this paper, we investigate phrasal-concept query suggestions for literature search. These suggestions explicitly specify important phrasal concepts related to an initial detailed query. The merits of phrasal-concept query suggestions for this domain are their readability and retrieval effectiveness: (1) phrasal concepts are natural for academic authors because of their frequent use of terminology and subject-specific phrases and (2) academic papers describe their key ideas via these subject-specific phrases, and thus phrasal concepts can be used effectively to find those papers. We propose a novel phrasal-concept query suggestion technique that generates queries by identifying key phrasal-concepts from pseudo-labeled documents and combines them with related phrases. Our proposed technique is evaluated in terms of both user preference and retrieval effectiveness. We conduct user experiments to verify a preference for our approach, in comparison to baseline query suggestion methods, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique with retrieval experiments.  相似文献

We present a novel multimodal query expansion strategy, based on genetic programming (GP), for image search in visually-oriented e-commerce applications. Our GP-based approach aims at both: learning to expand queries with multimodal information and learning to compute the “best” ranking for the expanded queries. However, different from previous work, the query is only expressed in terms of the visual content, which brings several challenges for this type of application. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of our method, we have collected two datasets containing images of clothing products taken from different online shops. Experimental results indicate that our method is an effective alternative for improving the quality of image search results when compared to a genetic programming system based only on visual information. Our method can achieve gains varying from 10.8% against the strongest learning-to-rank baseline to 54% against an adhoc specialized solution for the particular domain at hand.  相似文献
