The Polish book industry, which has a great and rich tradition, is evolving to a free-market system. This paper attempts to explain the complexity of the current situation and the implications of Poland's transition to democracy. The privatization of the country's book industry is discussed.     

From Google Print to Google Book Search: The Controversial Initiative and Its Impact on Other Remarkable Digitization Projects

Google's initiative to scan and add book content into its search engine has resulted in much praise and protest. Changing its digitization project's name from Google Print to Google Book Search and adding information to its site did not keep Google out of copyright court. However, publicity surrounding this project has spawned renewed interest in book digitization projects, with collaborative efforts quickly growing. This article will look at Book Search's history, highlight how it has been altered along with its name, and point out other interesting book digitization projects that Book Search has spawned or recently brought into the limelight, such as those associated with the Internet Archive.

Managing Customer Relationships

ABSTRACT

The most important thing for a book vendor in managing customer relationships is successfully managing the company's own resources. Book vendors must be able to hire and train staff who understand the changing needs of libraries and who are able to influence the company's strategic direction and daily operation so that these needs are met. In recent years, book vendors have had to go beyond bookselling, and provide technical services to help libraries to become more efficient. This has required new levels of expertise from book vendors, who today work more closely with their customers then ever before.     

The Current Reality of National Book Publishing Output and Its Effect on Collection Assessment

Abstract

The WLN Conspectus determines a library's acquisition commitment (growth rate) by considering what percentage of book publishing output it acquired. In 2000, the Bowker Annual changed its source of book publishing from the American Book Publishing Record to Books in Printwith an attendant increase in recorded output. That increase has serious implications for libraries using the WLN formula to determine collecting levels. The recent Art assessment at Jacksonville State University demonstrates how Bowker's change in book title output affects the library's acquisition commitment level, and what adjustments the library made to maintain consistency and continuity.     

Book Clubs: Not Just for Public Libraries

While recreational reading is often seen as the purview of public libraries, academic libraries can also reap the benefits of hosting book clubs. This article discusses the steps the St. Catherine University library took to create a book club on campus. The article includes an overview of the St. Catherine University's book club, the benefits of hosting a book club, and suggestions for starting a book club in an academic library.

Do conservators dream of electric sheep? Replicas and replication

The paper crosses the boundaries between different genres, drawing on key material and emphasising the philosophical challenges around decision-making and values in relation to replication and replicas. In 1968, Philip K. Dick wrote the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? which became the inspiration for the 1982 film Bladerunner. The book is set in Los Angeles in a post-apocalyptic future where mankind has left Earth, resulting in androids being created to develop new ‘off-world’ colonies. The book and film create a novel and interesting framework to discuss the subject of replicas and replication within contemporary conservation practice. Key themes are decay promoting replication, original versus replica, creating empathy in replication. The debate focuses on the case study of Naum Gabo's Construction in Space (Crystal) of 1937–39; which was the sculpture replicated in the most recent replication project at Tate, completed in July 2015.

Trials and Triumphs in the Polish Book Trade Since 1989

ABSTRACT

After a brief look at the Polish book trade under communism, the article examines developments since communism's collapse in late 1989, concentrating on monographs. The initial mushrooming of publishers was followed in 1992 by the failure of Sk?adnica Ksi?garska as the monopoly book distributor. Since then, a number of private wholesalers have emerged; publishers are also distributing their out-put themselves. The system is now working well for the majority of publications. However, it is often not particularly effective for scholary books. Reasons, consequences, and tactics for coping are discussed.

With an 1890 book called The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, Alfred Thayer Mahan had a profound and far‐reaching impact upon subsequent world events. In large measure, Mahan's effectiveness was derived from his style in discourse. Evidence for this assumption is found in the reactions of Mahan's readers, in their correspondence to him or about him. Analysis and synthesis of those situationally bound responses to discourse account for a rhetorical function of style in language as para‐message conducing to ethos.

This article examines that growth, looks at which book and journal publishers are most active in the field, and explores the publishing environment. Philanthropy's interdisciplinary nature raises questions about audience and markets, as well as authors and publishers.     

The effect of government policies on the acquisition of library resources in Nigeria

The acquisition of library resources in Nigeria at one time was mainly import oriented. This made the acquisition process very involved in foreign trade and foreign exchange transfer, with most items purchased from overseas book dealers. In the 1970s and 1980s Nigeria was affected by the prevailing world economic condition, and the nation experienced a decline in foreign exchange earnings. In order to improve the nation's economy, the government introduced certain structural policies. This paper highlights the effect of these government policies on the acquisition of library resources generally and the book trade in particular in the country, and the survival measures adopted by the Nigerian libraries.
