Implementing Cost Effective Electronic Course Reserves in an Academic Library

ABSTRACT

This paper describes how one academic library implemented electronic course reserves while keeping costs to a minimum. The system was implemented using a web page to provide links to electronic files in PDF format mounted on a Unix web server. Copyright restrictions and user access are issues that need to be addressed by any library considering e-reserves. In the face of positive faculty and student reaction to this new library service, one challenge that remains is raising public awareness so that more members of our university community may take advantage of this technology.     

Processing Electronic Reserves in a Large Academic Library System

Implementation of electronic reserves in academic libraries represents one of the most important advances in libraries for patrons in many years. Some academic libraries offer faculty peace of mind by assuming responsibility for copyright clearance for electronic reserve services. Libraries have the specialized equipment to scan and edit files to make them readable and easily downloaded by students. Libraries also have sufficient electronic storage to hold scanned material for future semesters. This paper examines how electronic reserves are managed in a large academic library system. The short history behind electronic reserves at Pennsylvania State University Libraries and the procedures associated with creating and maintaining the reserve system, will be considered, as well as offering a statistical assessment of how electronic reserves have affected the other services of the University Libraries. Finally, issues surrounding electronic reserves, fair use, copyright and Pennsylvania State University Libraries' procedures will be explored.

Abstract

This paper identifies issues and concerns relating to implementation and expansion of electronic reserve services in a multiple library setting, and offers possible solutions to common problems, as well as the benefits of centralization.     

A Model for Choosing an Electronic Reserves System: A Pre-Implementation Study at the Library of Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus

This study explores the nature of electronic reserves (E-Re-serves) and investigates the possibilities of implementing the E-Reserves at the Long Island University/Brooklyn Campus Library (LIU/BCL).     

Implementing an Electronic Reserves Pilot Program at Christopher Newport University

Abstract

Implementing any new service or technology can require a process of trial and error. Often, it is useful to introduce the service as a pilot project, so that the staffing issues and technical details can be worked out prior to fullscale implementation. This is especially important at times when staffing and/or budgetary circumstances are uncertain. Doing so can give the library the ability to test technologies and assess the staffing and procedural impacts of a new service, and to make necessary adjustments in the process. At Christopher Newport University, that was the approach taken to implementing electronic reserves services.     

Implementing Electronic Reserves

Abstract

After years of minimal electronic reserve use at the University of California, Irvine Libraries, a combination of opportunity, hard work and luck has made electronic reserves the central part of reserves as a whole. Reviewing the time from January 2003 to June 2004, this paper discusses the many different factors and circumstances that resulted in this change, including advantages resulting from software updates and resultant reorganization of workflow, as well as reflecting on where the Libraries would like to go next.     

Shifting Responsibility for Electronic Reserves Copyright Permissions from the Academic Departments to the Library

Abstract

Copyright permissions for reserves at Washington State University Vancouver have always been the responsibility of the instructor who submits the reserve request. Concerned that this practice could, at worst, place the University in danger of infringing copyright and, at best, in unnecessary duplication of effort, the Library undertook a pilot study to find out what would be involved, both in terms of workflow and direct costs, for moving copyright clearance to the Library. In cooperation with the Business department, the Library developed workable procedures for the Library to handle permissions.     

Interlibrary Loan and Electronic Reserve Haikus

ABSTRACT

The Interlending Section, University Library System, Chinese University of Hong Kong provides centralized, charging back interlibrary loan services. Overseas document delivery vendors are essential to the Interlending Section in satisfying the information needs of its users. Based on nine considerations, the Interlending Section seriously and carefully selects a few overseas document delivery vendors that are able to satisfy nearly 90% of photocopy requests in 14 days. Such performance matches that of the local sources. The considerations used by the Interlending Section are cost and pricing structure, response and efficiency, fill rate, specialty, in-house collection, royalty arrangement, charges other than document cost and royalty, method of payment, and means of request transmission.     

Marketing Electronic Reserves at a University Library

SUMMARY

Jacksonville State University's Cole Library implemented electronic course reserves in 2002. As with any new service, a marketing plan was prepared to ensure success. This article details the methods used to market the new service to the faculty and students at JSU. Included is a discussion of some unexpected benefits of the marketing effort and how to address resistance to the change from a traditional print service to an electronic service. This article will help fill a gap in the literature by describing one library's attempt at marketing electronic reserves to ensure a smooth transition from traditional reserves to electronic.     

The Impact of Implementing Electronic Reserves on Staffing and Service

ABSTRACT

Electronic Reserves provides new opportunities for collaboration between libraries, new staffing challenges, and new methods for assessing library services. This article examines the impact on staffing and services of implementing Electronic Reserves in several libraries on the campus of a major midwestern research institution. Results of a staff survey and use studies are incorporated. The benefits and difficulties of centralizing the management and workflow between libraries of Electronic Reserves are analyzed, as well as other related staffing issues such as processing time, space, training, etc.     

Kent State University's Electronic Reserves Experience

ABSTRACT

In late 1996, Kent State University Libraries began to research electronic reserves software in order to conduct a pilot project. The software chosen was ERes 2.0, developed at Santa Clara University by Philip Kesten and Slaven Zivkovic. This article describes how and why ERes was chosen and how the system was adapted for use at Kent State University. The integration with the OPAC and full-text databases, as well as the pitfalls encountered during the pilot project is detailed. Also described is the experience of learning to scan print documents efficiently.     

Assessment of Electronic Reserves Services at the University of Colorado,Boulder

Abstract

Assessment is an important part of any library service, including electronic reserves. This paper describes the assessment of electronic reserves services by means of a survey instrument administered at the University of Colorado, Boulder during the fall semester, 2003. As the University Libraries had moved from a predominately paper reserves environment to an almost completely electronic reserves environment at the beginning of that same semester, the survey offered a unique opportunity to compare student attitudes towards the two formats. We addressed planning for the survey, administering the survey, evaluation of the collected data, and reporting the results to teaching faculty.     

Electronic Reserves at Fort Lewis College Using Innovative Interfaces,Millennium Integrated Library System

Abstract

The John F. Reed Library at Fort Lewis College (FLC) implemented Electronic Reserves in the fall semester, 2003. FLC is a four-year liberal arts college in Durango, Colorado, with just over 4,000 students. Staff members use the Innovative Interfaces, Millennium Integrated Library System with the Course Reserves module along with Adobe Acrobat for scanning documents. The case study provides information on getting started, management of the project, necessary documentation, copyright concerns, implementation, statistics, and future directions.     

Electronic Reserves

SUMMARY

At Rutgers University Libraries, the traditional reserve collection has migrated to a paperless electronic reserve service. To justify the change, Library Staff used two methodologies: a user survey and an analysis of reserve collections broken down by location and format, with circulation figures for each category. This change was made in stages; electronic reserves went to a digital only service. Librarians at Rutgers University are using electronic reserve services to gain experience with digital collections, homegrown and commercial databases, collections for distance education, and materials and services to remote users. In this paper we also look at some of the factors affecting academic reserve operations.

Implementing Electronic Reserves Using the Blackboard Content System

SUMMARY

In 2004, the Binghamton University Libraries created a task force to explore the possibility of providing access to electronic reserves through the newly available Blackboard Content System?. The Content System is used to collect, manage, and publish content in Blackboard. The task force used a psychology course to pilot the Content System for reserve material after the class professor assigned “Course Builder” privileges to the reserves staff.

Preliminary findings of the pilot study suggest that using Blackboard for course reserves allows library resources to be better integrated into academic course work. The task force plans to continue their investigation into using Blackboard for course reserves. Challenges that need to be addressed in this investigation include the issue of requiring Course Builder privileges for each course, gathering and managing statistics, and the management of documents saved in the Content System.     

Writing a Proposal for Electronic Reserves at Virginia Commonwealth University

ABSTRACT

This presents the experience at Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries in developing a pilot project proposal for electronic reserves. The proposal served as the blueprint for planning as well as gaining the support of the library administration and library staff by discussing goals, scope, intellectual property management, budget, and timetable. Implementation of the proposal provided opportunities to identified obstacles and solutions.     

Electronic Reserves at Columbia University

SUMMARY

The integration of electronic reserve at Columbia University with its Library Management System and the University's Course Management System was made possible due to a favorable authentication infrastructure and the consistent use of standard course designations in each system. The streamlining of electronic reserve processing was an important factor in the successful implementation of electronic reserve at the university. The use of an electronic reserve link resolver which facilitates the consistent generation of use statistics, ‘fair use’ copyright compliance, and the generation of proxied links to IP restricted resources was also important.
