A review of recent research on spelling

Research on spelling ability has witnessed a vigorous but fragmented growth in the last decade. A theory on the cognitive mechanisms of spelling remains elusive, as does a unified approach to spelling instruction. The idea that spelling competence unfolds in a series of developmental stages has gained popularity. Despite a lack of clear empirical support for the model, its impact on spelling instruction in the schools is growing. Research on traditional issues in teaching spelling continues unabated (size of word list, time between practice and test, immediacy of feedback), as well as investigation on innovative approaches (computers, group instruction). A creative technique applied in the early grades is invented spelling. Although popular and widely applied, its effectiveness remains unclear. Research is beginning to indicate that reading and spelling may be separable but related cognitive processes and that spelling ability involves two processing systems-phonological and lexical. Finally, experiencing incorrect spellings may be detrimental to spelling performance, and more research is needed on this issue.

A review of the research literature on adult learning and employability

Because of rising life expectancy and declining birth rates, reducing early retirement and prolonging employees’ working lives have become major goals on social policy agendas. In this context, ensuring the adaptability and employability of the existing workforce has become an important issue. The aim of this article is to conduct a review of the most recent literature on employment outcomes of adult learning. The review covers literature published in English since 2010.     

A review of the research of Ference Marton and the Goteborg Group: A phenomenological research perspective on learning

This article reviews the work of Ference Marton and his group of researchers at the University of Goteborg in Sweden. It describes and explains research into: what students learn; how students approach studying; the relationship between approach to study and learning outcomes; what students understand learning to consist of; and whether it is possible to manipulate students' approach to studying in order to influence the learning outcomes. This review is intended to build up an overall picture of learning as seen from a phenomenological research perspective.     

国内旅游流基础理论研究述评

旅游流是最能体现现代大众旅游现象群体性特征的学术范畴,其也构成了旅游地理学研究的重要内容。国内旅游流的研究已有30余年的历史,相较于国外研究还存在诸多的局限性。主要表现为：研究的问题导向性和实践指导性特征不显著,研究内容单一,重复性研究过多,研究方法简单移植等。这些问题的存在与旅游流基础理论认知的薄弱性不无关系。鉴于此,文章分别从基础概念、研究的内容和方法三个维度对国内旅游流研究的相关成果予以梳理,且评且议。尝试探讨国内旅游流研究中存在理论局限性,以期能抛砖引玉引起业界对相关问题的重视和思考,减少研究中的重复和偏颇,夯实国内旅游流理论研究的基础。     

A research review of e-assessment

The use of e-assessment in higher education is a relatively new educational practice that has been more frequently studied in recent years. This review aims to summarise some research on e-assessment, providing an overview based on articles from three well-established scientific journals. Focusing on research topics, settings for e-assessment and research methods used in the articles, the review reveals a research field with a broad spectrum of inquiries and approaches. Research of e-assessment practices is often conducted as small-scale studies in which the e-assessment task comprises closed questions such as multiple-choice questions. The article discusses the findings to guide future research and concludes that there is a need for more studies on e-assessment in online courses as well as for longitudinal studies.
