The Minnesota Case Study Collection: New Historical Inquiry Case Studies for Nature of Science Education

The new Minnesota Case Study Collection is profiled, along with other examples. They complement the work of the HIPST Project in illustrating the aims of: (1) historically informed inquiry learning that fosters explicit NOS reflection, and (2) engagement with faithfully rendered samples of Whole Science.     

Management Science in Higher Education Institutions: Case Studies From Greece

Regardless of the source of funding, university quality is based on knowledge, teaching, and research, and hence cannot be run like private enterprises as they are expert organisations that provide solely a public service. The purpose of this paper is to investigate, through the analysis of case studies, whether or not management theory, principles, and techniques are being implemented by Greek universities and consequently whether or not university management contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the university’s operation.     

Computer Science Education Overseas: The Case of Greece

This article examines the Computer Science/Computer Engineering (CS/ CE) education provided in Greece. Emphasis is given to the university‐level education provided by the state with particular consideration of the curriculum, faculty, student body, and facilities. Science and Education in a Totalitarian Regime: The Case of Slovakia

In this paper we attempt to reflect on the past period in which we have lived and worked; more specifically to examine the role played by science and science education in the two recent Slovakian totalitarian regimes (1939–1945, 1948–1989).     

The Centre for Studies in Science Education at the University of Leeds

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of aesthetic science activities on improving elementary school at-risk families’ children's positive thinking, attitudes toward science, and decreasing their anxiety about learning science. Thirty-six 4th-grade children from at-risk families volunteered to participate in a 12-week intervention and formed the experimental group; another 97 typical 4th graders were randomly selected to participant in the assessment and were used as the comparison group. The treatment for experimental group children emphasized scaffolding aesthetic science activities and inquiry strategies. The Elementary School Student Questionnaire was administered to assess all children's positive thinking, attitudes toward science, and anxiety about learning science. In addition, nine target children from the experimental group with the lowest scores on either positive thinking, or attitudes toward science, or with the highest scores on anxiety about learning science in the pre-test were recruited to be interviewed at the end of the intervention and observed weekly. Confirmatory factor analyses, analyses of covariance, and content theme analysis assessed the similarities and differences between groups. It was found that the at-risk families’ children were motivated by the treatment and made significant progress on positive thinking and attitudes toward science, and also decreased their anxiety about learning science. The findings from interviews and classroom observations also revealed that the intervention made differences in children's affective perceptions of learning science. Implication and research recommendation are discussed.

The Use of Drama in Science Education: The Case of “Blegdamsvej Faust”

This is a study of the structure of ‘The Blegdamsvej Faust’ and its relation to Goethe's classical play Faust. The ‘Blegdamsvej Faust’, a play written and performed by Bohr's students in 1932, is inspired by the very rapid development of Physics in those turbulent years. A struggle is made to promote the odd idea of a weightless particle. Moreover, this study lays emphasis on the fact that new ideas of Physical Sciences become more accessible, comprehensible and familiar through dramatization. For scenario-vehicles one may use as a basis plays from the classical repertoire or write something new. Several hints are given in this article.     

The Mandate for Interdisciplinarity in Science Education: The Case of Economic and Environmental Sciences

Science educators often miss an opportunity to encourage the cognitive leaps associated with the formation of networks of meaning when they deliver scientific concepts as solitary sets of received wisdom. Interdisciplinary science education provides a rich setting for encouraging this formation of meaning within the minds of the students. A wonderful example of this rich interdisciplinary setting can be found when environmental science is informed by the study of economics within the classroom. The usefulness of particular concepts in economic science for environmental science is illustrative of what science students can gain from learning science in an interdisciplinary setting.     

Science Learning in Special Education: The Case for Constructed Versus Instructed Learning

Throughout the history of education, debate has existed between the relative merits of instructed versus constructed knowledge. In this article, we review our program of research in science education for students with disabilities in order to reveal some insights into this debate. We review research in science curriculum, mnemonic strategies, text-processing strategies, hands-on approaches, coached elaborations, “discovery” learning, correlates of effective inclusive science classrooms, and class-wide peer tutoring with differentiated curriculum enhancements. Overall, both instructed and constructed knowledge are important and can be facilitated with appropriate instructional strategies. Implications for practice and future research are provided.

思想政治教育课对于正处在心理成长、转型期的青年学生而言,发挥着熏养其价值思维、塑造其精神人格、锻炼其意志理念的关键效用,师生互动是增强其吸引力的关键途径.而目前师生间互动模式、手段的单调,则限制了师生双向化对于知识教授与吸纳应用的交流、沟通以及协同,最终制约了思想政治教学的实效.通过调整互动策略,更新其操作方式,强化师生之间的诱导、点拨以及反馈,可有效改善思政教育教学的效能.
