The Multiple Faces of Peer Review in Science Education

I use autobiographical narratives to describe and analyse my involvement in peer review activities in science education and to illustrate their historical, social and cultural constitution. I explore ways in which peer review and science education have interrelated in 30-plus years in which I have been a science educator. I employ cultural sociology and activity theory to identify patterns of coherence and coexisting contradictions that create tensions able to catalyse improvements in science education. I argue that early career science educators need a gradual induction into peer review activities, preferably increasing their effectiveness by coparticipating with more experienced colleagues. Also, I critically examine my roles as a peer reviewer, within various contexts that include being an editor of journals and a book series, an examiner of dissertations and an advisor of graduate students, and as a reviewer of applications for tenure and promotion. In so doing I probe power relationships between the reviewer and the reviewed and explore the possibility that peer review is hegemonic. Finally, I present strategies for science educators to reach a collective understanding of how to enact peer review equitably.     

Peer Review in Science Education: An Introduction

This is an introduction to a special issue of Research in Science Education that focuses on peer review in science education. We introduce each of the articles in the special issue and highlight some of the issues that are addressed and the methods employed in the articles that follow. We regard peer review as central to issues of research in science education and publication of this special issue as just in time.     

The Contradictions in Science Education Peer Review and Possibilities for Change

The final paper in this special issue of Research in Science Education is a synthesis of the articles that comprise the special issue. The main part of the article consists of a metalogue between the two authors in which we identify critical issues associated with peer review and highlight theory and practices we regard as salient to the continued improvement of science education.

美国联邦政府是高校基础研究经费的主要提供者,国家科学基金会是联邦政府专门负责对基础研究资助的机构,是美国最重要的科学基金管理部门之一.向国家科学基金会申请研究经费是美国教授获得资助的主要途径.国家科学基金会主要通过同行评议对科学资金进行分配,同行评议是分配研究经费的核心.     

浅析理工科教学中的人文素质教育

针对理工科教学中人文素质教育缺乏的现状,分析了其原因及其危害.在科学教育和人文素质教育的密切联系的基础上,论证了理工科自然科学教育中实施人文素质教育的可行性,提出了一些理工科基础课教育中进行人文素质教育的有效方法;同时论述了人文素质教育对理工科高校教师的要求.     

德国中学科学教育教学改革项目考察报告--情景教学(化学)Chemie im Kontext的构建与实施

进入新世纪以来,联邦德国实施了一系列旨在促进课程教学和科学教育质量的改革项目,其中情景教学(KontextLernen)与设计是理科教学改革领域的一个主要项目。论文以化学情景(ChemieinKontext)项目为例,着重从课题的理论哲学基础、框架与构成、案例设计、初步评价等方面,对德国科学教育改革观念与举措进行了教学论视野的分析,以期为我国新课程改革提供一些参考。

This essay focuses on four themes, which are post-tenure review as a summative moment in a cycle of formative occasions, the post-tenure period as characterized by flux and change, the post-tenure period as one of crisis in intellectual growth, and peer collaboration and review of teaching as appropriate modes of faculty development.
