Building on previously published research analyzing federated searching in light of the ACRL Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education, the author presents ideas for the integration of federated searching into existing curricula, regardless of learning level.

The Perfect Storm: Examining User Experience and Conducting a Usability Test to Investigate a Disruptive Academic Library Web Site Redevelopment

Abstract

The researchers conducted a task-based usability test of the effectiveness of online research beginning on the library Web site homepage. The participants included five university faculty members, six graduate students, and six undergraduate students. All participants reported feeling satisfied with their overall research experience, though most were unable to effectively complete all the research tasks of the test. The researchers identified weaknesses in the approach and process of many participants, and overall usability issues of the library discovery tool and other library Web site pages and research interfaces. Findings indicate the need to strategically incorporate self-service information literacy and research skills help into the library Web site, and to implement navigation and design changes to the library homepage, discovery tool interface, online catalog, and across all the library's Web services.     

Engaging Students in Searching the Literature

Abstract

In 2014, the library curriculum for the College of Pharmacy was revised, with the number of sessions increased from one per term for two terms to one per term for three terms, instruction was scaffolded, and the flipped classroom model was employed, with active learning and assessments used throughout. This article will describe how the active learning portion of one session was gamified: why a “serious game” was the correct tool to use to improve student learning, how the game was created, and what was the theory underlying this transformation.     

Foundations of Database Searching: Integrating Evidence-Based Medicine into the Medical Curriculum

Library integration into the medical school curriculum is a crucial aspect of meeting Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Accreditation Standards and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Medical School Objectives Project (MSOP) guidelines. To accomplish this, academic health sciences libraries seek to develop evidence-based medicine (EBM) literature searching classes within the medical school curriculum. Establishing a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts behind health sciences database searching among medical students is a prerequisite for a more demanding evidence-based literature searching curriculum. The George T. Harrell Health Sciences Library, Penn State College of Medicine, sought to incorporate an evidence-based medicine literature searching structure by working within the existing problem-based learning system during the preclinical years. Students in the clinical years will participate in evidence-based assignments during their rotations. A fourth-year EBM elective will be created to reinforce and round out students' exposure to these concepts.

[目的/意义]网络学术信息资源在科研工作者科学研究过程中发挥着越来越重要的作用。通过对不同任务情境下科研用户网络信息搜寻过程中认知理性和行为特征、学术信息的评判标准和影响因素的研究,为科研用户信息行为的深入研究奠定基础。[方法/过程]运用发声思维研究方法,从不同任务情境视角对科研用户信息搜寻过程中网络学术信息评判与影响因素进行对比分析,在此基础上,讨论与分析科研用户网络学术信息搜寻行为理性与其根源。[结果/结论]在不同任务情境下科研用户网络学术信息资源的选择与评判是多侧面维度、多方面因素综合作用的结果,存在共性与差异;任务情境是科研用户心智模式塑造和网络学术信息意义建构过程中的关键条件变量;网络环境中的科研用户网络学术信息搜寻行为与搜寻过程是有限理性的,任务情境是有限理性行为的关键驱动因素。     

Multiculturalism and Technology in the Academic Library

The impact of controversial subjects and information technology on research in academic libraries is the subject of this essay. The debates surrounding multiculturalism, problems encountered during information retrieval and instruction of patrons involved in scholarly pursuits illustrate the changes occurring in contemporary libraries. The article also discusses user perceptions of database structures, the importance of librarians remaming sensitive to the public, and confirms the need for service oriented professionals in academic libraries.

The Faceted Catalog as a Tool for Searching Monographic Series: Usability Study of Lens

This study explored the functionality of the University of Chicago's faceted catalog, Lens, in respect to monographic series. A user study was designed to evaluate the efficiency of Lens in searching for monographic series and also to determine whether controlled series access in the catalog record improves the search results. The results of the study indicate that while Lens could be considered an adequate tool for searching series that are known to be published under the same title, some changes would make it a better search engine for a series that changes series statements from one volume to another.     

Card-Sorting Usability Tests of the WMU Libraries’ Web Site

ABSTRACT

This article describes the card-sorting techniques used by several academic libraries, reports and discusses the results of card-sorting usability tests of the Western Michigan University Libraries’ Web site, and reveals how the WMU libraries incorporated the findings into a new Web site redesign, setting the design direction early on. The article briefly describes open and closed card-sorting techniques and quantitative and qualitative methods of analyzing data commonly used in computer and library science fields. Findings from this study allowed the library design team to vastly improve its initial redesign decisions for a new Web site tabbed navigation system. Card sorting not only helped the design team validate its redesign decisions, but it also opened the WMU libraries to outside innovation, inviting Web site visitors to redesign the Web site free from the libraries’ influence. The simple and inexpensive techniques used here may be useful to any Web librarian or design team embarking upon redesign and usability testing of their own sites and interested in building a more compelling, insightful Web site.     

Topic Map as a Method for the Development of Subject Headings Vocabulary: An Introduction to the Project of the National Library of Poland

Subject searches in the National Library of Poland catalog are still comprised of a significant number of all searches, but understanding and exploration of the National Library of Poland Subject Headings causes many problems, not only for the end-users, but also for many librarians. Another problem in the National Library of Poland is the insufficient use of relationships between the terms. The solution could be a properly designed Web application based on a topic map using appropriate visualization that supports indexing and information retrieval in the National Library of Poland. The article presents the main stages of a planned project.
