Impacts of an Information Commons on an Academic Library's Service Points

Abstract

The impacts of technology upon traditional library resources are sometimes unexpected. The library at California's University of the Pacific discovered that usage of print materials was dwindling, even though the addition of a 50-station “Information Commons” had bolstered overall library use. At first it was anticipated that the circulation desk might, within several years, be downsized into a mere information kiosk. Nevertheless, a study of the two service points-the Information Commons and the Circulation Desk-concluded that patrons still seek library services with a personal touch and continue to demand print materials. A “user satisfaction” survey revealed no mandate from users for the abandonment of print materials. As in the past, the services of the circulation desk have adapted to fit its users.     

Providing Circulation Services in a Temporary Location

Abstract

This article presents the experience of Circulation Services at Booth Library, Eastern Illinois University, during a 31-month relocation to temporary facilities while the building was undergoing renovation. The move to temporary locations presented new challenges and required unique solutions. Issues such as the rationale for the move to the temporary facilities, the organization of the temporary branches, the delivery service, preservation and security, staffing issues, and the role of student workers are discussed. The article recommends extensive planning prior to a move to temporary facilities, as well as the adoption of a flexible approach during the duration of the stay in the locations.     

Implementing an Electronic Reserves Pilot Program at Christopher Newport University

Abstract

Implementing any new service or technology can require a process of trial and error. Often, it is useful to introduce the service as a pilot project, so that the staffing issues and technical details can be worked out prior to fullscale implementation. This is especially important at times when staffing and/or budgetary circumstances are uncertain. Doing so can give the library the ability to test technologies and assess the staffing and procedural impacts of a new service, and to make necessary adjustments in the process. At Christopher Newport University, that was the approach taken to implementing electronic reserves services.     

Developing Partnerships to Create Electronic Reserves at the University of Kansas Libraries

Abstract

Today, it is advantageous for academic libraries to look outside their own organizations to other potential campus and commercial partners when considering new services. This case study describes the planning and implementation of electronic reserves at the University of Kansas Libraries, including the integration of two commercial partners, XanEdu (provider of electronic course packs) and Blackboard (a courseware management package). Docutek was chosen as the electronic reserves software package because it offers copyright management and faxing capabilities (when hosted locally). There is also a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of centralization versus decentralization of different aspects of electronic reserves when multiple library locations are involved.     

Processing Electronic Reserves in a Large Academic Library System

Implementation of electronic reserves in academic libraries represents one of the most important advances in libraries for patrons in many years. Some academic libraries offer faculty peace of mind by assuming responsibility for copyright clearance for electronic reserve services. Libraries have the specialized equipment to scan and edit files to make them readable and easily downloaded by students. Libraries also have sufficient electronic storage to hold scanned material for future semesters. This paper examines how electronic reserves are managed in a large academic library system. The short history behind electronic reserves at Pennsylvania State University Libraries and the procedures associated with creating and maintaining the reserve system, will be considered, as well as offering a statistical assessment of how electronic reserves have affected the other services of the University Libraries. Finally, issues surrounding electronic reserves, fair use, copyright and Pennsylvania State University Libraries' procedures will be explored.

Circulation Training in an Integrated Library System

Abstract

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library participated in the statewide conversion to a new integrated library system in the summer of 2002. Prior to the system's implementation, various local and statewide committees coordinated efforts to train their staffs so as to ensure a seamless transition. This case study analyzes, in detail, the successes and limitations of the training program at the UIUC Library, with respect to the circulation module. The program can serve as a model for libraries needing to train a large staff body in a short amount of time.     

Academic Library Management: Case Studies,Edited by Dearie,Meth, and Westbrooks: A Substantive Analysis

Abstract

Case studies can be an excellent way to teach management principles. This article presents a detailed analysis of the fourteen case studies included in Academic Library Management: Case Studies, edited by Tammy Nickelson Dearie, Michael Meth, and Elaine L. Westbrooks. The authors of the case studies participated in the 2014 UCLA Senior Fellows program, directed by Beverly Lynch, and prepared these case studies as a way to fill a void in the professional management literature. The article summarizes the management problem in each case study and the actions taken to resolve it. This analysis also includes a critique of the case studies as appropriate including additional information that would make the case study stronger, the author’s opinion on the veracity of the account, commentary on the choice of the management principles, particularly strong or weak points, and further lessons that could be drawn from the case study. The article concludes with some general observations on this type of case study and its potential use in teaching library management.     

高校教参信息服务系统建设现状调查分析与应用研究

采用问卷调查法从系统评价、系统质量、系统功能、系统服务、系统风险5个维度对国内20所高校教参信息服务系统建设情况进行调查研究,发现目前国内教参系统建设普遍存在的问题,提出从畅通元数据收集渠道、及时更新数据、丰富资源类型、添加Web2.0元素、利用新兴信息载体等方面来提升教参服务水平,为其他准备建设或更新教参系统的高校提供决策支持。     

Curating and Accessing Off-Site Special Collections: Area Studies Materials and High-Density Storage

The ongoing growth of academic, public, and special libraries collections around the world, combined with limited physical space and budget constraints, has prompted university administrators and librarians to create and implement plans for storage facilities, often high-density in nature and off-site (not housed in the same building or location as other library materials). This article provides an analysis of area studies materials at the Oak Street Library Facility and the implications for long-term access to and care of vernacular language materials at academic libraries.

Using Electronic Course Reserves to Promote Information Literacy of First-Year Students in a University Writing Program

Abstract

The University of Florida is a large research institution with a freshman class of more than seven thousand students out of a total enrollment of about fifty thousand.Although a partnership with the University Writing Program has allowed the Libraries to reach almost four thousand students this past academic year, certain barriers still exist. There are just too many students to reach and the content is too vast to cover in only a single fifty-minute class period.Furthermore, problems encountered while working with students, as well as with their graduate writing instructors who run the classes, have reduced the effectiveness of the current library sessions.To solve these problems, our instruction team created targeted information literacy activities online, so writing instructors could have students complete them outside of class. This article covers some of the challenges in coordinating a first-year information literacyprogram in a large university setting and how electronic course reserves can be used creatively to deliver the desired content.     

A Look at Circulation Statistics

ABSTRACT

Nearly all academic libraries keep circulation statistics which are often shared with their parent university, library consortia, and national organizations. This study attempted to discover what goes into circulation statistics by surveying Southeastern research libraries. Libraries were asked what they count in their circulation statistics and what their circulation policies are to identify differences across libraries. The results of the survey indicate that there is no set formula for counting circulation statistics.

本文回顾分析了图书馆在历史上学术性功能不断减弱、服务性功能不断增强的过程及其成因,揭示了其在当代陷入的价值迷失的困境,指出重归学术机构本质是它走出困境的重要途径,尤其是对于高校图书馆,这也许是它提高自己在学校中地位的唯一出路。文章还提出了在高校图书馆重振学术风气的若干措施。     

国内高校图书馆数字化教参管理与服务系统的调查及分析

从系统名称、归属类目、位于网站的层次、检索路径、检索结果的馆藏状态、是否有教参推荐表等方面对本科高校图书馆建立的数字化教参管理与服务系统进行调查分析,指出这些系统存在着名称不统一、归类不一致、链接点的位置位于不同页面等问题,并针对这些问题,提出建设我国高校图书馆数字化教参管理与服务系统的建议。     

Combining Circulation and Reference Functions at One Desk

ABSTRACT

In order to learn from experiences of academic libraries that combined their Circulation and Reference functions into one service point, an informal survey was conducted through relevant listservs. Some academic libraries have combined Circulation and Reference Departments at one desk and others are in the process of doing so. The results summarize the responses with a discussion of the various models and outcomes.

Processing Reserves,Seeking Permissions and Engaging the Campus

Abstract

The Library has a dual role on campus, providing access to materials in compliance with fair use guidelines and informing teaching faculty about these guidelines and how they impact classroom teaching and beyond.

Library staff members have an extensive knowledge of copyright pertaining to reserve materials. The Library must maintain a delicate balance, upholding interpretation as it relates to procedures and service, while acting as a copyright information resource for faculty. The Library is involved in campus-wide efforts to inform faculty about copyright through online tools, conferences and ongoing conversations.
